Wikipedia:Wikipedia vandal control

[edit]

Hi SC. Is there any consensus anywhere that what you are doing is a good thing? I just removed one of your tags from the Thomas Edison page. I appreciate your good intentions but wonder whether adding these tags will improve our encyclopedia. Best wishes, --Guinnog 20:57, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • Hello... was planning to size down the tags soon. It was originally made for the purpose of notifying IP editors that their vandalism has been noticed (as no IP reads their own talk page) but as I have noticed it is pretty big. Thank you for your comments, I'll change them now. StonedChipmunk 20:59, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps the article talk page would be a better place for them. But I definitely think something like this needs a broad consensus before you add them anywhere. --Guinnog 21:04, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't add any more of these templates to articles, ok? You'd need to get consensus that that was a good thing and I don't think it is. I appreciate your enthusiasm but don't think flagging up publicly that an article is frequently vandalised is a good ide. See WP:BEANS. --Guinnog 23:32, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

  • OK, I'll make a deal here: I'll stop using the templates until I reach a larger amount of members or I gain a consensus on this issue. I've changed the size dramatically of the templates but will not add any more until I reach the above requirements. - StonedChipmunk 23:36, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You would have to have a consensus. Thanks for saying you would not add it to any more articles. Like I say, I really appreciate your enthusiasm, just don't think this is the way to go. Best wishes --Guinnog 23:42, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

About your vandal control project

[edit]

Hi. I saw some discussion about your Wikipedia Vandal Control Program and I thought I would comment here because I know you've been receiving various feedback about it.

It's obvious to me that what you are trying to do is to control the level of vandalism to Wikipedia articles. You and any other members of your group are to be praised for doing that, as vandalism is a big problem.

However, I think there are a fair number of editors who think that the answer to the vandalism problem is not to set up a whole new Vandal Control Program as you have done. I know this may be contrary to your intuition, which is that since vandalism is a big problem, anything done by good-faith users to combat it must be good. But I would urge you to think about the following:

  1. There are already a large number of rules, guidelines, templates, etc. for dealing with Vandalism on Wikipedia. It can take new editors a fair amount of time to figure them all out. I don't know that it's going to be helpful to add another whole round of such things.
  2. There is duplication between the purpose of your group and the Counter Vandalism Unit (which itself has been a little bit controversial at times), and there is no reason why editors who want to combat vandalism should have to decide between two groups, or join two groups.
  3. As someone mentioned above, the templates you have been putting on articles can be distracting, and they draw too much attention to vandalism and the vandals who create it. It is unfortunate if sometimes, someone comes to Wikipedia to read an article and finds that it's been vandalized. It's probably just as bad, though, if he or she seems a notice about vandalism in general. We don't want anyone to think that vandalism is a central feature of reading Wikipedia!
  4. Fighting vandalism is important, but in my opinion it shouldn't be anyone's only focus in editing Wikipedia. You should be enjoying creating and editing articles on the topics that interest you, also!
  5. I'm afraid you're just not going to get consensus for the changes you are proposing. That doesn't mean you should just give up on your ideas, if you strongly believe they are right. But I don't want you to be disheartened as your early experiences of Wikipedia revolve around criticism of your project and a deletion debate about it, either.

I hope I haven't offended you with this message. It's obvious that even as a relatively new editor, you care about helping Wikipedia, and I am sure that you can find good projects in which to channel your edits and make a great number of valuable contributions. So I suggest that you put the "Wikipedia Vandal Program" on hold for now, fight vandalism using the existing tools and programs, and make other contributions as well. If you have any questions feel free to leave a note here (I watchlist pages I've contributed to), or on my talk page. Best regards, Newyorkbrad 01:05, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
