Evaluate an article

[edit]

This is where you will complete your article evaluation. Please use the template below to evaluate your selected article.

  • Name of article: Cantonese Cuisine
  • I chose to evaluate this article because it is of personal interest and cultural significance to me.

Lead

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • Does the Lead include an introductory sentence that concisely and clearly describes the article's topic?
  • Does the Lead include a brief description of the article's major sections?
  • Does the Lead include information that is not present in the article?
  • Is the Lead concise or is it overly detailed?

Lead evaluation

[edit]

The Lead does include an introductory sentence that defines Cantonese cuisine. It does not describe the article's major sections and includes information that is not mentioned in the rest of the article. The Lead is not very cohesive and could provide a better summary of what the article is actually about.

Content

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • Is the article's content relevant to the topic?
  • Is the content up-to-date?
  • Is there content that is missing or content that does not belong?

Content evaluation

[edit]

The article's content is relevant to the topic and up-to-date. However, the article is basically a long list of Cantonese dishes and perhaps could use some more information on background or outside influences for certain types of foods. Also, although dim sum has its own Wikipedia page, it is important enough in Cantonese cuisine that it should at least have a small section in this article.

Tone and Balance

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • Is the article neutral?
  • Are there any claims that appear heavily biased toward a particular position?
  • Are there viewpoints that are overrepresented, or underrepresented?
  • Does the article attempt to persuade the reader in favor of one position or away from another?

Tone and balance evaluation

[edit]

The article is mostly neutral, but there is a section that uses the word "should" as though the author were giving advice or an opinion.

Sources and References

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • Are all facts in the article backed up by a reliable secondary source of information?
  • Are the sources thorough - i.e. Do they reflect the available literature on the topic?
  • Are the sources current?
  • Check a few links. Do they work?

Sources and references evaluation

[edit]

The article is definitely lacking in citations for most information, but the references listed at the bottom all appear to be reliable sources. However, it may be better if more sources describing the history of Cantonese cuisine were included. Sources are current and links are functional.

Organization

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • Is the article well-written - i.e. Is it concise, clear, and easy to read?
  • Does the article have any grammatical or spelling errors?
  • Is the article well-organized - i.e. broken down into sections that reflect the major points of the topic?

Organization evaluation

[edit]

The article has a few grammatical errors. It is concise and clear. In the table of contents, there are only two sections - "Background" and "Foods", and under the "Foods" heading are several categories. While it is true that "Foods" is a major point, other categories like "Cooking Techniques" might be helpful instead of occasionally mentioning cooking methods throughout the article.

Images and Media

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • Does the article include images that enhance understanding of the topic?
  • Are images well-captioned?
  • Do all images adhere to Wikipedia's copyright regulations?
  • Are the images laid out in a visually appealing way?

Images and media evaluation

[edit]

Images are helpful and well-captioned. They adhere to Wikipedia's copyright regulations and are decently laid out.

Checking the talk page

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • What kinds of conversations, if any, are going on behind the scenes about how to represent this topic?
  • How is the article rated? Is it a part of any WikiProjects?
  • How does the way Wikipedia discusses this topic differ from the way we've talked about it in class?

Talk page evaluation

[edit]

There are a variety of conversations on the talk page. Some people are discussing the organization of the information in the article and others are discussing citations and questionable content. The article is C-class, and it is part of WikiProject Food and drink, WikiProject Hong Kong, WikiProject China, and WikiProject Macau.

Overall impressions

[edit]
Guiding questions
  • What is the article's overall status?
  • What are the article's strengths?
  • How can the article be improved?
  • How would you assess the article's completeness - i.e. Is the article well-developed? Is it underdeveloped or poorly developed?

Overall evaluation

[edit]

Overall, the article could use more information about Cantonese cultural influences or outside influences on cuisine. It has a thorough list of different types of dishes, and it provides the names in English, traditional and simplified Chinese characters, jyutping, and pinyin. It is an underdeveloped article and would benefit from additional sources of information detailing the history of Cantonese cuisine.
