Sunisa Lee (born March 9, 2003) is an American artistic gymnast. At the 2020 Summer Olympics, Lee won the women's artistic individual all-around gold medal[1], and the women's uneven bars bronze medal.[2] With her gold medal, Lee is the sixth U.S. woman to claim the Olympic all-around title following Mary Lou Retton, Carly Patterson, Nastia Liukin, Gabby Douglas, and Simone Biles.[3] She is also the first Hmong-American Olympian[4], the first Asian American woman to take the Olympic all-around crown[5], and was reported to be the first all-around Asian champion of any nationality.[6]
At the 2024 Summer Olympics, Lee won two bronze medals - one for the women's artistic individual all-around event[7], and the other for the women's uneven bars event.[8] With her all-around medal, Lee became the first reigning Olympic champion since Nadia Comăneci in 1980 to medal in the event at the following Olympic Games, and with her uneven bars medal, Lee became the first American woman to win two medals in the event.[9]

This made her one of 24 gymnasts eligible for the finals. During the finals, Lee finished with a total score of 57.433, securing the gold medal in the event, ahead of Brazil's Rebeca Andrade and Angelina Melnikova of the Russian Olympic Committee.[43] With this win, Lee is the sixth U.S. woman to claim the Olympic all-around title following Mary Lou Retton, Carly Patterson, Nastia Liukin, Gabby Douglas, and Simone Biles.[44] She is also the first Hmong-American Olympian[45], the first Asian American woman to take the Olympic all-around crown[46], and was reported to be the first all-around Asian champion of any nationality.[47]

Women's Uneven Bars

This made her one of eight gymnasts eligible for the finals. During the finals, Lee finished with a score of 14.500, after uncharacteristically failing to connect several elements. She ultimately won the bronze medal, only behind Belgium's Nina Derwael and Anastasia Ilyankova of the Russian Olympic Committee.[48][49][50][51]

Her first bronze medal was in the women's artistic individual all-around event, placing only behind teammate Simone Biles and Brazil's Rebeca Andrade.[52] With this win, Lee became the first reigning Olympic champion since Nadia Comăneci in 1980 to medal in the event at the following Olympic Games.[53][54][55] Later, Lee won her second bronze medal in the women's uneven bars event, placing behind Algeria's Kaylia Nemour and Qiu Qiyuan of China.[56] With this medal, Lee became the first American woman to win two medals in the uneven bars event.[57][58][59]

This made her one of 24 gymnasts eligible for the finals. During the finals, Lee finished with a total score of 56.465, securing the bronze medal in the event, only behind teammate Simone Biles and Brazil's Rebeca Andrade.[68] With this win, Lee became the first reigning Olympic champion since Nadia Comăneci in 1980 to medal in the event at the following Olympic Games.[69][70][71]
