Margaret Pargeter is a British romance writer who wrote for Harlequin and Mills & Boon.[1][2] She penned nearly 50 romantic novels between 1975 and 1986.[3]

Biography

[edit]

Pargeter was born in Northumberland, England.[3] She was widowed with two sons.[3]

According to an autobiographical essay by Pargeter published by Harlequin Enterprises in 1979, her father was a farmer in the Northumbrian Valley where she continued to live.[2] During the Second World War, she was a volunteer in the fire-fighting section of the Air Raid Precautions.[2] She started writing in her early teens, always carrying a notebook in her pocket.[2]

Pargeter wrote that she had her first break as a writer when her late husband urged her to enter a writing competition advertised in the newspaper.[2] Although she did not win anything, one of the editors liked her work and asked her to start writing serial stories for the paper.[2] Her first romantic novel was Winds from the Sea, which was accepted by Mills & Boon.[2]
