Ong's Hat was possibly one of the Internet's first Alternative history (fiction) works.

The threads of this Hyperstition can be traced back as far as the 1980s on Bulletin board systems and old xerox mail art networks. Possibly a highbrow version of a Church of the SubGenius style gag.
