A bunch of live action pirates are find the ultimate treasure: tickets to the Spongebob Squarepants Movie! After singing the theme song in a sea shanty, they plow into the theater just as the movie begins...

SpongeBob, new manager of the Krusty Krab, confronts a dire situation: a customer ordered a Krabby Patty with cheese...but didn't get his cheese! Leave it to the manager to save the day!

Or so he dreamed. SpongeBob runs to the Krusty Krab, sure that he'll be the one Mr. Krabs chooses as manager of the new...Krusty Krab 2? That's right; Krabs has opened a second Krusty Krab right next to the first one so he could get more money. A crowd has gathered, ready to learn the name of the manager. SpongeBob is sure he'll win the position, but his dreams are quickly shattered when Mr. Krabs announces Squidward as the new manager! Apparently, SpongeBob isn't mature enough to handle the great responsibility. Heartbroken, he sadly walks into the sunset.

Meanwhile, Plankton looks through his evil plans, A through Y, when Karen points out that he hasn't tried Plan Z yet. Excited, Plankton gets things ready...

At the Goofy Goober, SpongeBob and Patrick's new favorite undersea hangout, Spongebob sulks at the nut bar with Patrick. The duo drowns their sorrows in ice cream...and get completely "drunk".

Meanwhile, Plankton sneaks into King Neptune's castle and steals his crown. Angered at not having anything to cover his bald spot, Neptune then discovers a note Plankton planted on the scene framing Mr. Krabs. At the Krusty Krab, Krabs denies his claims up and down. Neptune isn't fazed when Krabs recieves a phone call from a guy in Shell City thanking him for the crown. Spongebob pleads with Neptune to let him and Patrick find the crown for him. Neptune agrees and gives the duo six days to find it. Spongebob and Patrick bust out the Patty Wagon, a new Krusty Krab promotional vehicle, and head out on the open road.

At the county line, they run into a couple of hilbilly fish, who warn them not to go past the line. Of course, they don't listen, and quickly get their ride stolen by a thug. After a few days of walking, they find their car at the Thug Tug, a rough and tough joint. Unable to get the key off the fish that stole it, they head to the bathroom and have a random bubble party. Apparently the tough fish find bubbles to be for little kids, and the manager demands to know who blew the bubble. The test: play the Goofy Goober theme song, and whoever can't resist singing it will be the culprit. SpongeBob and Patrick struggle not to sing along, and breathe a collective sigh of relief when another tough fish sings the song. Amidst the confusion, Patrick steals the key back, and the duo head off.

Back in Bikini Bottom, Plankon steals the Krabby Patty secret formula and starts churning out patties at the Chum Bucket. People are loving it, of course, eating their Krabby Patties and wearing their new Chum Bucket helmets. Squidward knows something is up, but has no time to snitch to Neptune, as the Chum Bucket helmets start controlling their wearers!

SpongeBob and Patrick drive through a field of skulls when they encounter a little old lady selling ice cream. However, the old lady is actually the tongue of a giant monster, who chases the duo until it's eaten by a bigger monster in a monster-filled trench. Stuck with no way to get over the trench, SpongeBob and Patrick break down, realizing they really are just kids. Neptune's daughter Mindy shows up to help the kids regain their confidence by showing them the fate of the Bikini Bottomers, nothing but slaves to Plankton, and uses her "mermaid magic" to turn the duo into men...by giving them seaweed mustaches. Conviced that they're finally men, they jump into the trench and bravely burst right through it. The monsters befriend them because of their manliness...yeah.

Dennis, Plankton's hired hitman, suddenly appears, ready to exterminate SpongeBob and Patrick. However, a scuba diver squishes Dennis and abducts the duo. When they wake up, they find themselves at a gift shop known as...Shell City! And right across from their fish bowl...King Neptune's crown! The evil scuba diver (Cyclops) sets them on a table to dry them out, but the duo's tears land on the plug, short circuiting the lamp. The smoke causes the fire sprinkler system to activate, bringing all of the gift shop items to life. As they attack the scuba diver, SpongeBob and Patrick get the crown and make it back to the sea.

It's the final day, and Mr. Krab's execution is close at hand...unless Mindy can stall her father long enough...

SpongeBob and Patrick worry that they won't make it back in time, but are happy to see David Hasselhoff willing to swim them back to Bikini Bottom! However, on the way back, Dennis makes his return. The ultimate battle begins on Hasselhoff's butt (yes, you read right). Spongebob and Patrick try to keep from being stabbed, and they keep the hitman distracted long enough for him to hit the bottom of a boat and fall off. Hasselhoff uses his pecs to shoot the duo down through the roof of the Krusty Krab just as Mr. Krabs is about to fry. Plankton has an ace up his sleeve, though, and ambushes Neptune with a Chum Bucket helmet! But before the good guys can lose, SpongeBob uses the Goofy Goober song and the power of rock and roll to destroy all of the mind control helmets and save the day!

Neptune's crown is back, Mr. Krabs is free, Plankton is arrested, SpongeBob and Patrick are men, and SpongeBob finally fulfills his dream as manager of the Krusty Krab 2. Of course, he's blissfully unaware that his manager position is nothing more than a title, as his job is exactly the same as it was before...

And the pirates are forced to leave the movie theater.

Box office success

Although the movie had a tremendous opening weekend, bringing in over $33 million dollars, the film soon fell down the box office chart and only made about $76 million as of December 24th, 2004.
