Knuckles the Echidna (ナックルズ・ザ・エキドゥナ, Nakkuruzu za Ekidona) is a fictional character within the Sonic the Hedgehog fictional universe of video games, television shows and comics. Some of his nicknames include "Knuckie" (Rouge's pet name for him in the animated series Sonic X), "Rad Red", "Knux", "Knucklebrain", "Knucklehead" and "Dread Head". His creator is Takashi Thomas Yuda.

He is a furple male anthropomorphic echidna, and while Sonic has large, spiky quills, Knuckles has dreadlock-like spines, implying that he might have a Jamaican background. He is 16 years old, stands 110 cm (3 ft 7 in) and weighs 40 kg (88 lb).[1] His birthdate is February 2, the date his first game came out.[2].

Two of the knuckles on each of his hands are actually sharp pointy thingys. He is the strongest character in the series (he is said to be as strong as Sonic is fast). He also has the ability to p0wn n00l3s, and is very skilled at a wide variety of martial arts. His favorite food is listed in various early Sonic the Hedgehog games manuals as being grapes. He is the most popular character choice for "Third Favorte Character" in the series. [3]

History

Games

Knuckles lives on Angel Island, which hovers in the sky thanks to the power of the Master Emerald. His duty in life is to guard the Master Emerald, and he is one of the last surviving members of the Echidna people who once inhabited the island.

Due to his rather remote location and the fact that he rarely strays far from his duty, Knuckles is often alone, and as thus can be quite antisocial and distrusting. On the other side, he is also quite gullible, which is often exploited.

In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Knuckles thought that Sonic and Tails were attempting to steal the Master Emerald and that the infamous mad scientist Dr. Robotnik (also known as Dr. Eggman) was trying to protect it. However, Robotnik had lied to Knuckles, and was planning on using the emerald to power his space station, the Death Egg. In the Hidden Palace Zone, Eggman's betrayal was revealed to him very bluntly, in the form of electrocution. Since then, Knuckles has joined Sonic and Tails in their quest to stop the villain.

Aside from appearances in the main Sonic series, Knuckles featured prominently in Knuckles Chaotix, a relatively unknown spin-off title developed for Sega 32X. The game also introduced Team Chaotix, a group of comical misfits.

In Sonic Adventure, the Master Emerald shatters when Eggman frees Chaos and Tikal's spirit from within it, causing Angel Island to fall out of the sky. Knuckles' goal is to reassemble the shards of the Master Emerald. His levels are large, explorable areas in which you must hunt about the various Action Stages for three shards per stage using a sort of "Emerald Sense" radar to detect nearby Emerald shards.

In Sonic Adventure 2, Knuckles the Echidna is having trouble guarding the Master Emerald when the mysterious thief Rouge the Bat attempts to steal it. In the middle of their argument, Dr. Eggman snatches the emerald while they're fighting, but Knuckles, in order to prevent Eggman from stealing the gem, shatters it. Knuckles then sets off to find the pieces and restore the Master Emerald once more. His gameplay is the same as in the first Adventure title.

In Sonic Heroes, Knuckles joins forces with Sonic and Tails, becoming the power member of Team Sonic. He serves a similar role in Sonic Riders, which also features a rivalry between him and Storm the Albatross. In Shadow the Hedgehog, he assists Shadow in several Hero missions.

In the upcoming game, Sonic the Hedgehog 2006, Knuckles appears as an amigo character alongside Sonic and Tails in Sonic's storyline.

Knuckles is also a confirmed playable character in Sonic Rivals. The game actually starts out with him on a search for the Master Emerald which strangely disappeared. Due to his rivalry with Sonic, once Dr. Eggman reveals he is the cause for the Master Emerald's disappearance, the two begin a friendly competition which expands to include other rivals,Shadow the Hedgehog, and Silver the Hedgehog.

Fleetway storyline

In Sonic the Comic, Knuckles is depicted as (at first) being the last of his kind, and bears the burden of guarding the Master Emerald and Chaos Emeralds alone. When the Death Egg crashed on the island, Knuckles was briefly duped by Doctor Robotnik into believing Sonic was a dangerous villain who plotted to steal the Island's Chaos Emeralds. The echidna thus allowed Robotnik to place his Badnik armies on the island and also construct a Launch Base Zone to rebuild his Death Egg, and assisted him in fighting Sonic & stealing Sonic's own six Chaos Emeralds so they could be combined with Knuckles' into one set of Emeralds. Knuckles, however, didn't trust Robotnik enough to tell him that he had the Grey Emerald which could control the others, and when Robotnik tried to absorb the Emeralds' power into himself, Knuckles used the Grey Emerald to defeat him.

Knuckles spent the next few months destroying every trace of Robotnik's influence on the Floating Island, including the entire Carnival Night Zone, and assisted Sonic both when his secret base came under attack by a Badnik army and when Robotnik established a base in the Ice Cap Zone. Finally, the two heroes teamed up to destroy the Death Egg before it could launch - which they failed to do, and worse Knuckles had failed to stop Robotnik's Metallix from stealing the Master Emerald to power the Death Egg! While Sonic fought to retrieve the Emerald, Knuckles used ancient echidna technology to pilot the Floating Island and open fire on the Death Egg with Chaos Energy blasts, finally downing the craft. With the Master Emerald returned, Knuckles owed a debt to Sonic and, despite preferring privacy, agreed to hide the entire population of Emerald Hill Zone in the Mushroom Hill Zone to keep them safe from Robotnik's wrath.

In the story The Homecoming, Knuckles discovered that an elderly, white-furred echidna named Dr. Zachary had appeared on the Island. Initially he claimed to be the first echidna to return to Mobius and that he was being pursued by a dangerous robot. It turned out Zachary was evil & using the robot (in reality an ancient echidna Guardian Robot) as his minion. He had the robot destroy the Master Emerald & absorb its power and intended to destroy Mobius with it, but Knuckles stopped him (using the robot's head as a brief substitute Emerald) and Zachary fell off the island. Knuckles then created a new Master Emerald from the echidna's Sacred Emerald Mines, which existed in a graveyard haunted by the ghosts of the Kohenyu - a race of Styrakosaurus' who were unwittingly hunted to extinction by the echidnas -, and he had to take responsibility for their death.

He was roped into helping Captain Plunder and his Sky Pirates launch a heist on an alien galleon, in return for a chest of ancient echidna documents that could help him with the Island's ancient computer systems. Knuckles trekked across Mobius with the chest, fighting the occasional villain as he went, before finally returning to the Island to battle Robotnik & a cyborg Zachary's attempt to turn the Emerald Hill refugees into an organic computer. Robotnik was then overthrown, and the refugees returned home.

Knuckles spent his days with Porker Lewis trying to uncover the mysteries of his lost people, occasionally being drawn into battle. He left the island to save lives from the environmental collapse of Mobius, when Robotnik tried to drain the planet's life force. Soon after that (in STC's last story), the Floating Island came under attack by the terrifying Chaos creature and Knuckles was forced to scatter the Emeralds across Mobius - dooming the island in the process. He was left distraught and had to be forcibly evacuated from the island, and joined up with the Freedom Fighters to stop Chaos & retrieve the Emeralds.

Knuckles is also one of the few to know of Tails' legendary status in the Nameless Zone, a fact he became aware of when he followed Tails through a portal mistakenly believing the young fox was being kidnapped. The Nameless Zone residents came to the conclusion that Knuckles was actually Sonic, whom Tails had claimed was his sidekick. Far from blowing Tails' cover, Knuckles was delighted to meet people who didn't worship his rival and played along, assisting him in defeating the terrifying Trogg once and for all.

The last STC storyline revealed Knuckles had lived in the ancient past, acting was a warrior & leader for the echidna's against the Drakon Empire. It is presumed by Sonic that Knuckles was placed in suspended animation for unknown reasons and lost his memory.

Archie storyline

In the American comic published by Archie Comics, Knuckles is the eighteenth guardian of the Floating Island.

Knuckles initially lived alone, his objective in life being to protect the island for many years until he learned of his noble heritage and the whereabouts of his people. His place in life was established centuries before his birth, as a descendant from Edmund who was the first Guardian. This continuity was the first to talk about Knuckles' relatives, introducing a group made up of his ancestors known as the Brotherhood of Guardians.

Knuckles' father, Locke, married Lara-le from the House of Arian. After Knuckles was born, and without the knowledge or consent from his wife, Locke subjected Knuckles' egg to large doses of Chaos radiation in order to create a guardian that surpassed the abilities achieved by his ancestors. After Knuckles hatched from his egg, he quickly sported intellect and abilities that were very abnormal in children his age. Locke wanted to begin Knuckles' training as guardian at three, however Lara-le didn't want Knuckles to be raised this way, and the dispute ended their marriage. Locke won custody of Knuckles when he was five, and retreated to the Floating Island. When Knuckles was ten, Locke journeyed to the Forbidden Zone with the confidence that Knuckles could be the next guardian. Locke then joined the Brotherhood in Haven.

Years later, Knuckles became the guardian his father hoped for. With Princess Sally no longer able to see Knuckles now that Robotnik took over her father's city, his only friend would be the cockatoo catweazle. Later on he became friends with Vector, Espio, Mighty, and Charmy-- soon to be members of the Chaotix. He was also mentored by Archimedes the fire ant since Guardians had previously relied on fire ants for this purpose. Knuckles later found confrontation with Enerjak, who would turn out to be Dimitri, his great uncle. Later, Knuckles found himself confronted by the Dark Legion, a group founded by Dimitri's descendants, including his female arch-nemesis Lien-Da.

Since then, Echidnaopolis was restored to the Floating Island. Knuckles then learned of his ancestry, reunited with family, and still struggled with his personal life. He had to bear the weight of being a living Chaos Emerald, while trying to be a normal guy. He developed a relationship with Julie-Su, a former Dark Legion member that defected to be with him. The two are linked by a sixth sense known as the Soultouch, which showed them that they were destined to be together. Knuckles later undertook an evolution that changed his pigment, and awakened greater powers. He died in a battle against Mammoth Mogul to protect his former enemy Dimitri, and then later came back to life after rejecting the ability to become one with the Chaos Force. Because of this, Knuckles lost his powers after he thwarted an earthquake on the battlegrounds with the Xorda. According to the prophecy of the Ancient Walkers, the "Avatar"(Knuckles) would bypass death and deliver the world from its suffering.

Although he was prohibited to return to the Angel Island, Knuckles gathered the approval to go back by Sally. He then learned that Eggman had enslaved the populace and had the Dingo population enforcing his will in a Nazi fashion. In the heat of the ensued battle, Knuckles' regained his powers and became Super Knuckles, and the people praised him Avatar. After realizing that the rest of the world suffered like his people, Knuckles gained the will to extend his services beyond the Angel Island, much to the disapproval of his father Locke.[4] Since that time, Knuckles and the Chaotix have lived in Knothole Village, working together with the Freedom Fighters. This choice of residence resulted in Knuckles becoming involved in battles against the likes of the Destructix and Ixis Naugus.

Sonic Underground

Knuckles appeared in several episodes of Sonic Underground. Friend or Foe echoes the usual storyline of his initial meetings with Sonic, as he is tricked by Robotnik's cohorts and goes after Sonic and his siblings. This episode also introduced a pet for Knuckles', a carnivorous dinosaur named Chomps. In keeping with the constantly reenacted scenario, Knuckles came to realize that he had been tricked, and teamed up with Sonic and co. to save the Floating Island.

Later, Sonic, Sonia, and Manic come to Floating Island seeking Knuckles' help in the recovery of a Chaos Emerald that has fallen into Robotnik's hands. Despite the warnings of his great-grandfather Athair, Knuckles leaves the island to help them. When the Chaos Emerald is damaged and releases energy enough to threaten all of Mobius, Knuckles leads his friends to Athair in search of a way to contain it. Despite the warnings of the Hedgehogs, Knuckles is vehement in following Athair's plan to form an alliance with Robotnik. He agrees to betray the Hedgehogs to help Robotnik, but when the doctor breaks his word and threatens to Roboticize Sonia, Knuckles saves his friends. After the Emerald is contained, Knuckles returns to the Floating Island, despite Sonia's wishes that he join them as a Freedom Fighter.

Personality

File:Advance2 knuckles.jpg
Knuckles the Echidna redrawn for the Sonic Adventure series.

While Knuckles's basic personality is always pretty much the same, some of the little details vary quite a bit, depending on the universe - the Knuckles of the games is extremely stubborn and is loyal to his duty, although he does go with Sonic and company to save the world far more often than his counterparts in other continuities. He is easily fooled into walking into traps. He was quite mischievous when he first appeared in Sonic 3, pulling tricks on Sonic and Tails and stealing their Chaos Emeralds, snickering after each encounter. Sega changed his attitude for the later games. Knuckles is said to be shy in his bio in Sonic Jam, which is not consistent with the new games, but can be backed up by the way he acts awkwardly around girls like Blaze and Rouge. Because of his flaws, he and Sonic don't always get along, but are still very good friends. In more recent games, he has proven to be more socially adept.

In Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie, Knuckles is a devoted treasure hunter, almost carefree, and quite goofy at times. He is said to be Sonic's best friend, but he's still more serious than Sonic and he knows his priorities.

In the Archie Comics, Knuckles is the devoted Guardian of the Master Emerald, and though he is more sulky, he is also perhaps more talkative and sarcastic as he isn't a gullible, social loner like his other depictions.

In Fleetway's Sonic the Comic, Knuckles is even more devoted to his duty as a Guardian, to the point of an obsession. He finds Sonic's distinctly increased ego in Fleetway slightly obnoxious, and is an extreme loner. He is quicker to anger, slow to trust and slightly less gullible than his Game incarnation. He guards not only the Master Emerald, but also the Chaos Emeralds. His favorite food was once said to be ant-burgers, an association with the echidnas of Earth.

The Knuckles of Sonic X gets mad very easily, but is slightly less stubborn than other incarnations and tends to give in to situations when others gang up on him. He is probably the most gullible of the versions of Knuckles. Since Angel Island wasn't around to protect, he focused less on his duty as a guardian, and spent the majority of the first season travelling on his own. He also likes to eat fruit.

Relationships

In the video games since Sonic Adventure 2, it is known that Knuckles has a crush on Rouge the Bat that he tries not to show. In Sonic Adventure 2, he saved Rouge when she lost her footing and was, presumably, going to fall to death by lava. While this could be labelled as regular 'Hero' behavior and that Knuckles was only trying to save the pieces of the Master Emerald, that can't be completely justified. Rouge has the ability to glide in the game, thus she could have easily avoided imminent peril (though the fact that both she and Knuckles were exhausted after their fight may have had something to do with it). Instead of forcing the emeralds off of her once she was back on her feet, Knuckles and Rouge gazed into each other's eyes. Finally, Rouge was the one who had to break the awkward moment. Because of these reasons and the fact that this is the most alluded-to relationship in the entire franchise, Knuckles and Rouge is a very popular coupling in the fanbase. In the Wild Canyon stage in Sonic Adventure 2, the lyrics to the stage rap "Kick The Rock!", which appears to be told from Knuckles' perspective, calls Rouge "sexy & smooth." However, throughout the rest of the song, he calls her a "double-cross spy thief that's out for my jewels" and "snitch", then later comes to say "give up the emerald or die, I don't love you". Even so, despite his desire to hate her, Knuckles does care for Rouge and her well-being, making their rivalry 'off-and-on'.

In Sonic X, Knuckles and Rouge's relationship is more delved into, and both have regular encounters and conversations with one another along decidedly romantic lines.

Some fans describe Knuckles and Rouge's relationship as a "love-hate relationship". These fans assert that, while Knuckles and Rouge love each other, they know that they cannot give in to their feelings because of their opposing jobs (with Knuckles being the Guardian of the Master Emerald and Rouge as a government spy and a jewel thief.) The future of Knuckles and Rouge's relationship is uncertain, and remains to be seen.

In the Archie Comic, Knuckles fell for a female Echidna named Julie-Su because both were destined for one another, though for a time he also showed romantic inclination towards Sally Acorn. In the comic's alternative M25YL storyline, Knuckles and Julie Su are together but not married, since both characters don't believe in ceremonies to prove their commitment to each other. In the alternate futures, they have a daughter named Lara-su.

In Sonic Underground, Knuckles showed interest in Sonic's sister, Sonia the Hedgehog. The pair both desired Mobius' freedom, and Knuckles saved her life multiple times. He even defied his grandfather Athair by breaking his agreement with Robotnik and saving her, Sonic, and Manic from Roboticization. However, due to the cancellation of the series, it is unknown how this relationship might have turned out.

In Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie, Knuckles is shown to have a slight crush on Sara. Firstly, Knuckles is shown to be considerably embarresed upon being accused of making Sara cry, and is teased by Sonic and Tails for it. Later, Tails asks Knuckles to stop a river of magma from destroying the arctic caps, and Knuckles initially hesitates. When Sara asked if he would do it for her, and gave him a kiss, Knuckles blushed, yelled "YES, MA'AM!", and then went off to stop the magma. He also yelled at Tails when he accidentally gropes Sara, stating that he never thought Tails would stoop so low. (However, it should be noted that the groping was an accident on Tails' part, and he did apologize for the incident. It is the reaction it invokes from Knuckles that forms the idea of a crush. Unfortunately, Knuckles was not present during another "boob grab" scene, where Eggman groped Sara on purpose.)

Abilities

File:SR Knuckles.jpg
Knuckles the Echidna as seen in Sonic Riders.

Knuckles is the strongest character in the Sonic series. His incredible brute strength enables him to perform feats such as punching holes right through thick steel without effort, shattering boulders to smithereens, and lifting objects many times his own size and weight. He has similarly enhanced endurance. Knuckles is occasionally shown to have fire enhanced punches as well as earth elemental powers.

While shown to be fast on his feet, he is still not as fast as Sonic or Shadow. Knuckles is able to swim and float along the surface of a body of water. Although his jump height is rather low, he can glide in the air by apparently trapping air under his dreadlocks. Knuckles is also a proficient burrower, able to dig into any wall or floor, as well as use the spikes on his knuckles to grip and climb walls. As the guardian of the Master Emerald, he is able to access and utilize it's powers, and can sense it from a distance regardless of it's condition.

Game-specific abilities

  • In Sonic Adventure, Knuckles can use the Maximum Heat Knuckles Attack to do a punching version of Sonic's Light Attack.
  • In Sonic Heroes, Knuckles plays the role of Power Formation for Team Sonic. He can use a move called Fire Dunk in which he uses Sonic and Tails as fire balls to destroy their enemies. He is also able to slam the ground and kick up tremors to attack enemies. The range and power increases as Knuckles collects energy cores. At Level 3, Knuckles can kick up a small volcanic eruption, spewing fireballs at all enemies. Finally, his gliding ability is modified into the Triangle Dive which enables him to float upwards using fan drafts.
  • In the game Sonic Riders Knuckles is a power-type character, and can bash his way through certain obstacles. When someone is near him, he punches the opponent in one of two different ways - one being a normal punch and the other being one that leaves opponents in a screw form for a few seconds.
  • In Sonic the Fighters Knuckles can activate the Shadow Punch, where he can attack an opponent from three different directions in rapid succession.
  • In the 2P Battle Mode in Sonic Adventure 2, collecting 20 rings allows him to punch the ground and stun the opponent. Collecting 40 rings allows him to utilize a move known as the Thunder Arrow, which shocks the opponent and makes them dizzy. Finally, 60 rings allows him to do a move called Power Flash and the opponent can't move for 10 or 20 seconds.

Transformations

In addition to his standard array of skills, Knuckles has had a number of other forms which enhance his traditional abilities beyond their normal limits.

Super Knuckles

File:Superknuckles.gif
Super Knuckles as seen in Sonic 3 and Knuckles

Like Sonic and Shadow, Knuckles has the ability to power up using the Chaos Emeralds and become Super Knuckles. As Super Knuckles, Knuckles does not change color or hairstyle, but merely glows and is surrounded by an aura (as seen in the image to the right). Like other transformed characters, Super Knuckles is faster, stronger, invulnerable to attack and able to fly. His physical strength easily surpasses that of Super Sonic, which is best seen against the final boss of Launch Base Zone in Sonic 3. Like Super Sonic, Super Knuckles must keep rings to sustain the form. When he runs out of rings, he reverts back to his normal form. Currently, Super Knuckles' only assured game appearances are in Sonic and Knuckles, Knuckles the Echidna in Sonic 2, and Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles.

Hyper Knuckles

When Knuckles uses the Chaos Emeralds in their transformed state as the Super Emeralds, he becomes Hyper Knuckles. This form has the exact same appearance as Super Knuckles except it leaves afterimages in his wake. He has the traits of a Super Form but is much more powerful. By touching a wall during gliding, he creates a powerful shock wave that destroys all surrounding enemies. He is also incapable of drowning. However, he still needs to keep rings to sustain the power. Hyper Knuckles' only appearance in the games was in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Knuckles. It is rumored that he may have been retconned out of the series along with the Super Emeralds.

Sonic Heroes

File:SKnuckles.jpg
Knuckles' transformation in Sonic Heroes

Knuckles transforms once again in the final battle of Sonic Heroes. His appearance matches that of Super Knuckles with the exceptions of his white energy field being replaced by a golden orb of energy, and his dreadlocks being raised in a similar fashion to Super Sonic. Like a Super Form, Knuckles becomes stronger, invulnerable to attack, gains the ability to hover, and ultimately fly. Due to the battlefield used, the effect on his speed is unknown. His strength is increased to the point where he can effortlessly punch air with enough force to create explosions, and destroy battleships while remaining unscathed. As part of a team attack, he can use the Maximum Heat Knuckles Attack without the need for the Fighting Gloves. This power is also kept with rings, but it decreases at a much slower rate than in previous games. While it is believed that this form is a return of Super Knuckles, and various filenames within the game support this notion, the unusual nature of the transformation leaves it disputed, and it currently has no official status.

Sonic the Hedgehog (comic)

File:Mammothmogul.jpg
Chaos Knuckles in battle against Mammoth Mogul.

In the Archie Comics, Knuckles can use 7 Chaos Emeralds to turn into Hyper Knuckles, and use the Master Emerald to turn into Super Knuckles. In Sonic the Hedgehog #141, the term "Hyper Knuckles" for his first transformation was scrapped in favor of "Super Knuckles", in order to correlate with the naming convention used by the games. As both, Knuckles appears in a hot pink form, and has the same powers he has in the games.

In Archie, Knuckles was also able to turn into a green-colored Chaos Knuckles. Chaos Knuckles was incredibly powerful, and possessed various types of Chaos powers. These included Chaos Blasts, teleportation, time and space traveling, healing ability, mind control, and reality manipulation. This was Knuckles' most powerful form, as well as the most powerful Chaos entity on Mobius. However, he lost this power when he came back from the dead, having died during a battle with Mammoth Mogul. Unlike his other transformations, this form was permanent, and Knuckles would have remained in that state if not for his death. It appears that Knuckles could possibly return to this form, as such an event occurred in the history of the Mobius: 25 Years Later alternate future. Following his transformation back into Chaos Knuckles, the Guardian killed Dr. Eggman and attempted to recreate Mobius according to his desires. However, before he got very far along, Sonic stopped him by activating an alien device. The resulting explosion caused Knuckles to revert, and cost him his right eye.

For a brief time following his death, Knuckles was stripped of all Chaos abilities, thus preventing him from transforming into Chaos Knuckles. Knuckles recently regained these powers after using the Chaos Emeralds to transform into Super Knuckles.

Alternate selves

Other Dimensions

Like several characters in the Archie Comics continuity, Knuckles has been depicted has having multiple counterparts in other realities. Among these counterparts are Anti-Knuckles, a version of Knuckles from the Anti-universe, which is the evil version of the main Sonic universe. Anti-Knuckles, like Knuckles, guards the Master Emerald, but is otherwise vastly different from his main universe counterpart. He is a pacifist, lives on an undersea island, and speaks with an Irish accent. He acts as rival to Evil Sonic.

Knuckles also has a counterpart named Tuxedo Knux, from a Sailor Moon themed version of Mobius. This version of Knuckles wears the tuxedo, cape, and mask of character Tuxedo Mask, and his weapon is also a thrown rose. This version is also the boyfriend of Sally Moon, that dimension's Sally Acorn.

Possible Futures

File:Knuckles 25 Years Later.jpg
Knuckles as he appears in the Mobius: 25 Years Later future.

A variety of Knuckles from alternate futures also exist. These include a future Knuckles who goes insane after absorbing a massive amount of Chaos energy and becomes leader of the Dark Legion. In order to protect their daughter Lara-Su from the knowledge of what her father had become, Julie-Su told her that Knuckles had been killed by Constable Remington. After Lara-Su traveled back in time and tried to thwart the alleged assassination, her mother revealed to her the true fate of her father.

The main future Knuckles appears in Mobius: 25 Years Later. This Knuckles is a powerful polictical figure in his role as Guardian, and is paired with Julie-Su. Due to their shared opinion that commitment matters more than ceremony, the two are not officially married, but have a daughter named Lara-Su. In this future, Knuckles and Sonic have had some bad shared history, leading to repeated disputes between them. Among these is an incident where, after becoming Chaos Knuckles once more, Knuckles attempted to remake Mobius as he saw fit following his defeat of Dr. Eggman. Before he could carry out his plan in full, Sonic stopped him with an alien device, thus robbing Knuckles of his right eye. Refusing to have it replaced with a cloned organ citing religous beliefs, Knuckles instead had a cybernetic left eye implanted that allows him to see in all spectrums.

Together with Sonic, Knuckles was brought into the confidence of Rotor and Cobar, who discovered the imminent collapse of Mobius' timeline. Putting aside their differences, Knuckles and Sonic agreed to work together in hopes of saving their shared planet. Before setting out on this mission, Knuckles granted his daughter Lara-Su's request to become the next Guardian, something he had refused for some time beforehand. However, Lara snuck aboard his transport, and when Sonic was sent into the past using the Tachyon Displacement chamber, Lara-Su disappeared as well.

In the alternate Mobius: 25 Years Later, Knuckles retains his memories of the original timeline due to having been next to the Tachyon Displacement Chamber when it went off. This time around, Knuckles became chief enforcer to Shadow, who became the despotic ruler of Mobius. Among his assignments were capturing not only the returning Lara-Su and Sonic, but also Tails. Held captive, the trio had to convince Knuckles that Shadow's rule was not the best thing for Mobius. Knuckles soon revealed to the three, and Rotor, that he didn't take them prisoner for real, and that he had planned the fake arrest from the very beginning so that he, Tails, Lara-Su and Sonic could rebel against King Shadow together. The battle: Sonic versus Knuckles

A recurring theme within the Sonic universe is that Sonic and Knuckles will have some sort of disagreement resulting in combat. However, these battles are always left unresolved, tied, or interrupted by outside circumstances. After these battles, they generally team up to defeat a common enemy.

The battle has appeared in the games, comics, and TV series. It occurs in practically every game featuring Knuckles up until Sonic Adventure 2. It appeared in both Fleetway and Archie's Sonic comics, the latter even featuring a battle between Sonic and Knuckles' powered-up selves, Super Sonic and "Hyper" Knuckles. Archie also featured a battle between Mecha Sonic and Mecha Knuckles, both having been subjected to Roboticization. It has also occurred during Knuckles' introductory episode of Sonic Underground and several times throughout Sonic X. It also served as the plot for the game Sonic Rivals.
