The Albany Academy for Girls (commonly referred to as AAG) is a girls' day school in Albany, New York. Founded in 1814 by Ebinezer Foote, AAG is the oldest independent girls' day school in the United States [1]. It is located on the corners of Hackett and Academy Roads, across the street from its brother school, the Albany Academy, which was founded three months prior.

It was announced in an open letter on The Albany Academy website on August 24 and published in the Times Union on August 26, that The Albany Academy, the Albany Academy for Girls, and Doane Stuart School were discussing a possible merger to be effective in 2007. The new school would occupy The Academies' campus and be lead by Doane Stuart Head of School Richard Enemark as Caroline Mason, the current head of both Academies, previously announced her intention of stepping down after the 2006-2007 school year. However, the Times Union reported on September 21 that Doane Stuart School had withdrawn from the proposed merger.

Mission Statement

The mission of Albany Academy for Girls is to engage each student in academics, the arts and athletics. AAG’s rigorous college preparatory program challenges its students to become creative, independent thinkers and fosters responsible citizenship and lifelong learning. We are committed to the education of girls in an atmosphere that respects differences, inspires curiosity and develops integrity.

Sister School to The Albany Academy (A seperate school for women)

Albany Academy for Girls and its brother school, The Albany Academy, maintain single-gender education as a core value of each institution, yet Upper schoolers may have classes with the oppisite sex. Both schools are strengthened by their unique relationship. The Upper School Coordinate Program, a mutually beneficial partnership, broadens the range of educational and extra-curricula opportunities available in both schools. The two schools sponsor a coeducational Early Childhood program for three-year-old students and provide selected social and enrichment activities that are held with boys and girls together in the Lower and Middle School grades.

While the two schools have independent and separate student governance structures, a single Head of School, Mrs. Caroline Mason, provides leadership of both institutions. The two separate boards of trustees for the two schools have recently decided to merge allowing them to more fully consolidate resources between the two institutions.
