This is a summary of 2002 in music in the United Kingdom, including the official charts from that year.

Previous year: 2001 in music (UK)
Next year: 2003 in music (UK)

Summary

Just under four months after her death, Aaliyah reached number one on 13 January with her single More Than a Woman. This was knocked off the top spot by a rerelease of George Harrison's My Sweet Lord just short of two months after he had also died.

March and the first half of April were dominated by releases from Pop Idol finalists Will Young, the winner of that talent search, and Gareth Gates. Gates had performed Unchained Melody during the contest and, having received great acclaim for his version, released it as his first single. The pair went on to have three more number ones in 2002, each having one more individual effort and then joining together for a double-A side of Elvis Presley covers. The year would also see two more acts created by reality television series reaching number one: Liberty X and Girls Aloud.

The year was quite a success for Elvis Presley in a variety of ways. A Little Less Conversation became a massive dancefloor hit after it was remixed by Junkie XL and was adopted, at least by the British public, as the theme for the Football World Cup. This led to Will Young and Gareth Gates covering two of his songs, releasing a double-A side single and reaching number one, and a successful greatest hits album topping the album chart.

In the album chart the year started and ended with two very different releases by Robbie Williams – the first being the Rat Pack cover album Swing When You're Winning and the second being his more usual pop release Escapology. Both Eminem and the Red Hot Chili Peppers enjoyed massive chart success with their albums being at the top spot for five weeks.
