Great River School is a Montessori charter school in Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Great River School was founded in 2003 by Benedict Moudry and Larry Shafer. they worked very hard to find a building the first year, and though they worked there hardest when the founding students came into the school the first year, they found it partly unfinished and they were pleasently surprised when they were informed they had to have class outside. it was warm and sunny and was very enjoyable.

while we had class outside, the only times when we were allowed to go inside were for quick trips to the bathroom. while we stepped aside of the ladders and pieces of rubble, we all marveled at how this would be a school in the end. luckily the school was finished enough for us to have class inside by the end of september, so we got inside before it got quite cold.

even when the building was starting to look like a school, there were little things that someone at a regular public school would take for granted. for instance, for the first 3 and a half months we didnt have any lockers. it was fine in the summer, but once it got cold it was a very big inconvienience to pile everyones stuff on the floor. but one of the schools biggests aspectswas that it adapted well in any situation, so when we needed lockers and they would come for another 3 months, we got the garage class to get together and build some temporary shelves to put our stuff on.

overall, this school prevailed through the hardships and persivered. this school prides itself on being the first montessori public high school in the country. we are all very proud of what this community has accomplised.
