Class A airport
Class A Airports The airspace around some of the worlds busiest airports is classified as ICAO Class A. This protects the approach and departure paths not only from aircraft not under Air traffic control but keeps out all traffic not on active instrument flight plans. All aircraft inside Class A airspace are subject to Air traffic control. Traffic must be operating under IFR which identifies the aircraft on radar and has all route info entered on a flight strip for quick reference by the controller. Most high altitude airspace world wide is Class A due to the high speeds of jet traffic at cruise altitude. An airport may be in Class A airspace if it is slot controlled to prevent congestion. Some may be Class A in the interests of national security such as Tel Aviv Ben Gurion. No airports in the United States are Class A although Reagan National near Washington DC has had "temporary" restrictions on incoming traffic that are similar since 9/11.
