She would become an in-studio anchor in 1989 and would become the first African-American woman to anchor a 10pm newscast in Chicago from 1994 to 2002. She became Chicago's highest-paid television news personality when she joined WBBM-TV after WLS-TV refused to renew her contract with her demands of higher salary.

Burns had a small cameo appearance in the 1994 film Richie Rich starring Macaulay Culkin.

Lawsuit over Alleged Racism

In 2006, Diann Burns (Watts) and husband Marc Watts filed a lawsuit against Metzler/Hull Development Corp., the builder of their new home at 1933 North Burling Street in Lincoln Park.[1][2] She claimed the contractor did shoddy work because she is black. They demanded at least $600,000 and listed 84 complaints about their 6 bedroom, 4 ½ bath, 5,752 ft² (534 m²) home.

Metzler/Hull countersued claming the allegations were baseless.
