Dialogue with Joy

Welcome, thanks, and sorry

You've had over 50 edits already here, but hey... Welcome to Wikipedia :)

If you have any questions, see the help pages or add a question to the village pump. You can also ask lowly Wikipedians like myself if you need anything.

Thanks for your edits in Florina and Macedonia (Greece). I mistook an anonymous vandalism for your edit that came immediately after it, sorry about that. The more exact information about what happened to the Macedonians in ELAS is very much appreciated.

Thanks again and good luck. --Joy [shallot] 11:50, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)

You're welcome Joy! Indeed, I'm new to Wikipedia, and I could use some of your help in many cases. In fact, I was going to send you a message myself about a couple of things of common interest, but you did it first. Some data on the HRW report(s) mentioned in Wikipedia, including some of your edits seem to a be a little out of focus. HRW and 'greekhelsinki' are NGOs dealing with human and civil rights violations, have issued many reports regarding Greece, but have never produced an estimate of the number of any minority here in Greece, as demographics is not their interest.
I'm not sure if it was me who summarized the abstract of that HRW report, but if you think you can do better, please feel free. Note that this verbiage is probably rather whitewashed due to almost constant attempts by various by and large anonymous pro-Greek editors who would be happy to remove all instances of any sort of Macedonian issue in the north of the country (or indeed to the north of it, as witnessed by the tons of flamewars revolving around Republic of Macedonia et al). If you are knowledgeable about these issues, especially from within Greece, help would be most welcome. --Joy [shallot] 16:13, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)
Also, the problems regarding the former ELAS rebels, the minority issue etc. are all aspects of the greater "Macedonian problem" and are not exclusive to Florina or any other single town or prefecture. Therefore, the info I contributed regarding ELAS on Florina article is at wrong place right now. Etz Haim 15:36, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)
That's true, though it's not useless. We can probably move it into a subsection of Macedonian Slavs and then link that from those articles, and possibly elsewhere too. --Joy [shallot] 16:13, 26 Aug 2004 (UTC)

Rename

Also, I noticed that you moved your User page to uppercase the letter H. This worked, but didn't actually change your whole username. If you'd like to do that, too, please see Wikipedia:Changing username or meta:Changing username. --Joy [shallot]

Yep, that's what I want to do.
This has now been done. Regards Kate Turner | Talk 11:04, 2004 Sep 5 (UTC)

Acarvin's notes

Thanks!

Thanks for your note regarding my Thessaloniki contribution. What a small world - I wonder if we bumped into each other there. I've just signed on as a Wikipedian, and plan to post more of my travel photos and links to my travel diaries, which are published on a CC license. Andy Carvin | Talk 15:21, 2004 Sep 14 (EDT)

Mediterranean Jews

I just noticed on your page that you're working on a history of the destruction of Thessaloniki Jewish community. I was hoping to visit the Ioannina synagogue when I was there in 2001 but wasn't able to find it. My family lived in the shtetl of Busk, now in western Ukraine, but my surname Carvin was originally spelled Karawan, which was the name given to rabbis who lived in medieval Kairouan, Tunisia in the 11th century. Some day I'll hopefully figure out how they migrated from North Africa to Eastern Europe.... Andy Carvin | Talk 18:25, 2004 Sep 22 (EDT)

Greek letters

I can see them, yes. I believe that they'll be seen correctly in any remotely Unicode-capable browser, and those that aren't will probably have a conversion table to use the HTML entities. You could probably check Wikipedia:Special characters or something... --Joy [shallot] 09:02, 14 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Coats of arms

Can find them here http://digilander.libero.it/tdsotm2/Puglia/Comuni%20le/elenco%20comuni.htm. Please cite the website http://digilander.libero.it/tdsotm2/ in the image info. Regards,

You made a page on Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. There was already a page with the title University of Thessaloniki which ought to have been moved. I haven't merged them as I'm unsure if the older article should have been moved to Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, rather than just making a redirect, in order to keep the page history of the senior article. Anyway, they should somehow be merged. I suggest you insert your contributions in the University of Thessaloniki page, make a redirect of your own page, them move the whole article to Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, overriding the redirect. Being the author of the material on the new page, it is better if you do this yourself. Thus the page history will clearly give names of all authors involved.//Tupsharru 08:24, 18 Sep 2004 (UTC)

First of all, thanks for pointing this out to me, and thanks for fixing Template:Coimbra Group. The name of the university is "Aristotle University of Thessaloniki", emphasizing "Aristotle" to distinguish it from the fellow University of Macedonia. The solution that you are suggesting though seems to be a litte complicated. Instead, I think it would be better to give credit to you and User:Sky in the the article's talk page. OK, let's do it. Etz Haim 09:37, 18 Sep 2004 (UTC)
It seems that "overriding the redirect" is not so simple after all; it requires administrator intervention. I've already asked for help, so let's see. Etz Haim 09:54, 18 Sep 2004 (UTC)
It's been accomplished. Etz Haim 09:01, 27 Sep 2004 (UTC)

Greek universities

Hi. Thanks for your nice note about the Category:Universities in Greece category. Maurreen 15:32, 29 Sep 2004 (UTC)

HRW on Macedonia

Google for: site:hrw.org macedonians greece and it's right there. Sadly no longer available completely online, only a longish abstract and a link to the yahoo book store. --Joy [shallot]

If I understand you correctly that it was not you who sought to change "conservative" to "Slavic," I apologise. Adam 01:34, 5 Oct 2004 (UTC)

I'm sure your English is better than my Greek. Adam 02:25, 5 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Very cute spam warning - maybe you should make it into a template. :-) Evercat 00:43, 6 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Lega Padania

Hi. It's obvious that if you search for the words "Lega Padania" in Google, you will find a lot of results, because the Lega Nord party defines the Nothern Italy "Padania" (from the name of the Padana valley). Then, if you look at the results, you will see that many times between the word "Lega" and "Padania" there is a comma "," or parenthesis "Lega (Padania)". But be sure, "Lega Padania" is NOT the name of the party. Thake a look at the official home page of the party: you will never see the name "Lega Padania". At least, you will see something "Lega Nord - Padania", or "Lega Nord per l'indipendenza della Padania" (Nothern League for the indipendence of Padania). Last, but not least, look at the article on the Italian Wikipedia: it:Lega Nord - there you will not see the name "Lega Padania". --Lornova 02:04, 10 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Point taken. I've noticed the commas, parentheses etc. between the results, but I've also seen "Lega Padania" as an integer. Also, note that Wikipedia's policies suggest that popular names, even if they are not official, are mentioned and sometimes preffered over the others. Etz Haim 02:08, 10 Oct 2004 (UTC)
I know that policy (I write daily in the Italian Wikipedia), but I could assure you that no one in Italy calls the party "Lega Padania". Also I have seen on Google "Lega Padania" as an integer, but these are probably errors or unusual shortenings. --Lornova 02:14, 10 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Are you gay/"hebrew"?

you are a gay jewish/hebrew male living in thessaloniki, macedonia? (unsigned by Themata)

I'm a male, consider myself straight, gay-tolerant (sometimes sympathizing), influenced by Thessaloniki's multicultural past and proud to be its inhabitant. :) Etz Haim 21:48, 10 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Yeah, you're right. I apologise.

Hey Etz. Yeah, you're right, "goat-priests" does not belong in Wikipedia. You're right. I got pissed off this morning because i saw an artile in the paper "TA NEA" mentioning that our verenable Εθνοπατέρας/τραγόπαπας Cheif of the Greek Church, Christodoulos, made a comment about how he postponed his visit to Istambul, because during his sermon this past Sunday, he "advised" his flock not to associate with Turks becase they are un-believers and barbarians. The man is over 150 kilos and he hasn't seen his d**k since the Metapoliteush, but he believes qualifies to "guide" Greek foreign policy... MOM, WHERE DID YOU HIDE MY 2x4?

Before I do any edititing on Theodorakis, I should mention that I consider Ariel Sharon a war criminal. No, I don't think the Hebrew people are the root of all evil, but I think someone should really reach out and smack Sharon and the rest of the right-wing/theocratic/religious leadearship/Likud upside the head. I'm not dropping the ball, here; don't get me wrong. Gimmie a day or two and i'll hook up with the archive of the newspaper "TA NEA" and maybe "ELETHEROTIPIA" so, i can reasearch the quotes. Hmm, hey, doesn't the guy live in Kifisia? I think I'm 10 minutes away from his house. I could always go ask him and have him on record. Project2501a 13:36, 13 Oct 2004 (UTC)

UPDATE: Niko, take a look at the comment i made in the theodorakis discussion page, let me know if you agree, then i can go ahead and insert quotes from the second part to balance out the view. IMHO, the article should /explicitely/ point out that the reader should not judge theodorakis without reading the article itself.
on that note, would it be possible to get the paper's permition to copy the article on to the site? any ideas?

University of Thessaloniki

I'll fix it temporarily by swapping them, I'll have to dig up the old pages from the delete log to fix the history (by adding the stuff we lost when someone deleted one of the pages to do the move). Noel 17:48, 19 Oct 2004 (UTC)

"Linkspam" question

Hello, I am the founder of CRM Today, an informational portal dedicated to CRM and many related business fields like call centers, data mining etc. The site is totally operated from Athens, Greece and its the only non-US and non-UK site that is recognized globally for its useful and high-quality content. I was really surprised to see that you deleted our posts as "linkspam". I am a newbie in this amazing project so maybe I miss some guidelines, but I would appreciate if you could send me your comments and feedback on this. In fact we NEVER do linkspam (you can check search engines and other sources for this), I just believe that a site with 800+ FREE informational documents is really worth listed as a useful resource for our related business/technology terms. I apologize if I did something wrong and I do welcome your comments to fix them as you are from Greece also. :)

PS. i.e. I really cannot understand why our site is not worth get listed under the External Links for the term "Call Center" (we have 100+ unique free documents on this field) but Bitpipe's listing is. Your feedback is much welcomed at apada@tee.gr or posted here. Many thanks.

Your edits weren't confined in just CRM but also included some promotion for some "greek tourist guide" on Greece and some catamaran-related commercial site, which were also removed, together with all their like that wasn't yours. (See your contribution history.) There have been repeated attempts in the past to promote these exact same sites. Your objection regarding links to other CRM solutions, though, is probably worth to mention. Perhaps these links should be removed too, or yours restored. I'm moving your comments on the CRM talk page. Etz Haim 21:45, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Thank you for your so prompt reply. First of all I would like to clear out that the other posts (not-related to CRM Today) are NOT mine. I just understood that the consideration for "my contribution" is based on my IP, but this IP is shared by 8 people in my small company (Forthnet ADSL connection with dynamic IP). If I wanted to spam (I work on the internet for 8 years now) I would never use the same IP to do the spam listings... Furthermore the other 2 posts were made by one of my colleagues (NOT me and without me knowing it before) exactly after I discovered and visited Wikipedia for first time (it was my first time here indeed!). Please also note that there is almost NO possibility that the same sites have tried to be promoted here as they didn't even exist some months ago!!! I would appreciate if you could send me any details you may have on these attempts you mention to stakon@crm2day.com (that's the email address of my colleague). In my opinion the presentation of useful and content-rich external links is much useful but the problem is that spamming from poor sites will be growing fast. Regarding our listings, I would appreciate if you could take a quick look at our site and confirm or reject the free, quality and informational content that we offer, not only for CRM but for the other fields/terms/posts I've made. I fully understand your valuable and volunteer contribution to this great project and I would like to really congratulate you for your work here. I also know that spamming is and should be your "enemy" (like mine on my sites), but I also know that sometimes spam-fear leads to misunderstandings. Anyway, tt's really nice to find Greek people (we are not so many indeed!) activated in such great projects and I will be happy to assist you for any terms related to my knowledge (CRM, marketing, data mining, business intelligence, internet, call centers etc.). I will also try to find enough time to study thoroughly this project and register also. Thanks again and I do expect your feedback.

PS. I have studied electrical engineering and computer science in NTUA and Polytechnic School of Thessaloniki (for 2 years) so maybe there is a chance to have been fellow students in the past!?!

I received the following message from you:

Welcome!

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

There was no need to welcome me because you do not own Wikipedia. Second, I'm not a newcomer.

um, have you heard of the Wikipedia:Welcoming_committee? if you are not a newcomer, i'm sure you have. if you have read ALL of the tutorials 'IN'(not of) wikipedia, then i'm sure you've come across it.
   * How to edit a page
   * Editing tutorial
   * Picture tutorial
   * How to write a great article
   * Naming conventions
   * Manual of Style

I know to edit a page and I have already read all tutorials of wikipedia. So, don't bother.

if you know 'HOW' to edit a page, then, why did you add your comments to my "Happy Birthday" wishes to Etz, instead of opening a new entry? If you know how to edit a page, why the heck aren't you signing your own comments? and why aren't you intending them? Why are you using bold to note regular speech? don't you know that's impolite?

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! By the way, you can sign your name on Talk and vote pages using three tildes, like this: Quantis. Four tildes (Quantis 17:21, 13 Nov 2004 (UTC)) produces your name and the current date. If you have any questions, see the help pages, add a question to the village pump or ask me on my Talk page. Again, welcome!

I also suggest adding yourself to the lists of Greek Wikipedians and Multilingual Wikipedians. Keep in touch. Etz Haim 23:26, 12 Nov 2004 (UTC)

I do not understand the term "Greek Wikipedians". Sorry. I'm greek and a wikipedian and I offer articles to this free encyclopedia. I don't see any reason for creating such a "Greek Wikipedians list".

Greek Wikipedians are Wikipedians that are of Greek background. what's so difficult to understand? You don't need to create it, it already exists.

Until you find proofs that mr. Leventis is not excluded unfair from the greek media, please don't change the page. I respect you, I didn't changed your pages that most of them have controversial topics. Thank you.

Until you find proof that you are not an elephant/troll, I will assume you are one. :) "didn't changed" ???? wtf?? Who the heck taught you English?
Responsibility of bringing forth proof of a "conspiracy" lies with those that claim said conspiracy exists, not the other way. You are the one accusing the greek media of a conspiracy. What you are doing is crying wolf. You sound like a Christan Right Winger from the US or Christodoulos preaching in Sunday Mass about the evils of homosexuality: Screaming bloody murder and not offering any proof of how you're being put down.
What you are implying is that simply because a page has a controversial topic someone has to change it. What you are talking about is retaliation. Etz didn't retaliate against you. He edited an article he thought had a partisan point of view. You changed it back and then you demanded that your point of view is the only one that's true. The way things are done in wikipedia is that an article is posted and people then edit and re-edit and re-edit it, and talk about it and discuss it, till a consensus is developed. Obviously, you're just interesting in hearing only your own point of view.
I would love to hear alternative voices in the Greek media. Nobody's trying to stop you from creating an article about Mr. Leventis. A lot of people, though, are going to prevent you from making an article FOR Mr. Leventis. The point of Wikipedia is that you write your articles using perspective, which you do not exhibit.
By the way, posting in the English wikipedia requires a good command of the english language. It is clear, judging by your writing style as set forth in the history of the article on Mr. Leventis and in this post, that you do not possess such a command. For example, you translated the word αποδείξεις (ουσιαστικό) into 'proofs'. In Greek, yes, you use plural to refer to proof. But you cannot simply translate the word proof and concatenate an s. Proofs in English does not refer to the evidence or argument that compels the mind to accept an assertion as true; it reffers to book proofing and original prints of a book. I think you would be better off editing in the Greek wikipedia .
You are displaying signs of Trolling, a troll with a political agenda. I wouldn't have responded to you inside Etz's talk page, normaly, because ITS BAD PRACTICE TO DO SO, but you went and screwed with my happy birthday wish. So, this is a warning. Calm down and give us FACTS and public records. Pointing out the non-existance of something and offering is as proof is a logical fallacy and it is circumstantial evidence at best. Give solid examples, back by dates and your article can be restored. Till then, your article gets an Negative POV from me.
