In the early 1980s, Lee traveled to East Africa where he worked as a foreign correspondent for Reuters and the London Telegraph. During the civil war that followed the fall of dictator Idi Amin, he was one of the few western journalists living in Uganda. After being expelled from the country for writing about military atrocities, Lee returned to the United States and began writing plays.

Celia Hammond

Celia Hammond was a famous model in the 60s. At first happy to model fur, she later became concerned about the cruelty of the fur trade and took a stand against fur.

In 1986 she founded the Celia Hammond Animal Trust with the aim of opening a low cost neutering clinic to control the feral animal population. The first of these clinics opened in Lewisham in 1995, a second opened in Canning Town in 1999 and a third is planned to open soon in Chatham, Kent.

  • I agree with this suggestion. Refn is actually a Danish film director (he may be an instructor too, but what he is famous for is being a director) and some of his films have been released in the USA. If anyone wants to start this article, I think it would be a good idea. --Metropolitan90 06:20, 8 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

ChaCha

Press Release from ChaCha:

INDIANAPOLIS (September 5, 2006) ChaCha (www.chacha.com) is launching its experimental Alpha version of the first search engine to immediately connect people searching for information with live human guides in order to quickly provide only the most relevant search results. Guides can earn up to $10 per hour. In addition, once a guide reaches a pre-determined experience level, they are allowed to invite other guides to join and can then make 10 percent of the invited guides’ earnings.

With traditional first-generation search engines, users experience information overload as they receive millions of potential results. ChaCha solves this problem. Powered by thousands of knowledgeable humans, ChaCha automatically locates the best available guide to deliver personal and targeted results for users’ searches. Additionally, ChaCha users can choose to either “search with a guide” or get instant search results by tapping into ChaCha’s rapidly expanding index of human-generated results.

“We wanted to solve the problem search engine users are experiencing with existing services – that is, the massive volume of search results they must sift through online,” said Scott A. Jones, co-founder, Chairman and CEO of ChaCha. “We’ve addressed the problem with a comfortable and familiar search experience that improves upon the shortcomings of first-generation search engines. Connecting experienced guides with those searching for information in real-time is a powerful thing and brings a whole new dimension to Internet searching.”

Adding to the unique value of the search experience, ChaCha guides can access information that traditional search engines cannot, like searchable databases that dynamically generate Web pages “on demand” based on the needs of a specific user and Web sites that don’t make their entire database of content available to computer-based search engines that traditionally use spidering, indexing and page-ranking techniques. Until now, millions of online resources that may contain the best information and the answers people are searching for have not always been readily accessible through search engines.

Since ChaCha guides are selected to perform searches based on their knowledge and experience, ChaCha offers a unique advantage over typical online answer services. For example, a user requesting information on pancake recipes might be connected to a guide who is a retired chef or cooking enthusiast. The selected guide already knows which resources are best for recipes and can immediately provide links to tasty pancake recipes. To eliminate many quality problems with online answer services, ChaCha trains new guides by pairing them with experienced guides in simulated search sessions.

With ChaCha there is something for everyone conducting a search. ChaCha is the first search engine to offer both a “Search” and “Search with a human guide” capability on its home page. Similar to traditional search engines, ChaCha’s automated search uses an input box and simple search button, with results delivered in a split second. However, those results differ from traditional search engines because ChaCha’s search index is filtered through the automated indexing of results that guides have previously returned to users. This approach allows ChaCha to provide highly relevant search results while excluding millions of irrelevant results normally returned by machine-based search engines.

“ChaCha merges the best elements from social and traditional search methods to create a meaningfully different search experience,” according to Brad Bostic, ChaCha’s other co-founder, President and COO. “Also, our system is designed to continuously learn and become smarter – every minute of every day.”

ChaCha is free to consumers because it is supported by advertising. Currently there are 17 patents pending to cover what ChaCha does that makes it so revolutionary. For more information or to “ChaCha” your next search query, visit ChaCha’s experimental Alpha Web site at www.chacha.com.

Mammotome Breast Biopsy System

1. In a breast biopsy performed with the minimally invasive Mammotome® Breast Biopsy System, a small probe is inserted into the breast through an incision about the size of a match head (1/4 inch).

2. Vacuum is used to gently draw, cut and collect tissue into the probe's hollow chamber. This biopsy technique enables several samples to be acquired resulting in a highly accurate breast cancer diagnosis. Since multiple tissue samples are obtained without removing and reinserting the probe, there is less internal scarring, which minimizes interference with future monitoring and diagnosis of breast abnormalities.

3. Following a breast biopsy using the Mammotome System, the patient is typically sent home with a small adhesive bandage to cover the incision. The breast biopsy can be completed in less than one hour and is performed in an outpatient setting or doctor's office without general anesthesia or stitches.

Wellsite Geologist

A wellsite geologist is a scientist who works in the field in the petroleum industry. He/she usually has a formal degree in geology and several years oilfield experience which is usually gained through working as an office geologist for an oil company and specialized courses in petroleum geology. The job entails long hours at the well site, and may be international in scope. Some of the duties of the wellsite geologist are viewing cuttings samples through a microscope, advising on the drilling process, correlation of electric logs, and producing a strip log of the lithology encountered. At the wellsite he is known as the mudlog geologist, or mudlogger. The wellsite geologist is normally in charge of the well testing process and accounts for the oil and gas encountered while drilling. He is assisted by the company man and the drilling engineer and may supervise a crew of directional drillers. While the company man is in charge of the drilling process, it is the wellsite geologist who the investors are most interested in due to the fact that a hole in the ground is worth nothing until it encounters petroleum in the form of oil or gas. After the oil and/or gas has been found, the petroleum engineers take over the job of producing the well. An experienced wellsite geologist can earn several hundred thousand dollars a year during boom times.

In 2006, the timeslot was again slightly shortened to 35 minutes from 1825 to 1900, then in 2006 from 1820 to 1955 to give way for a new show called the Boys and Girls Zone.

The Show

Every year, TTK has a CG (computer generated) mascot that hosts some of the game segments.

TTK's cast is composed of children known as Terebi Senshi or TV Soldiers. As of 2006 (season 27-28), there are 24 Terebi Senshis, with ages ranging from 10 to 14. Theya re supplemented by adult hosts as well. From 2003 up to this time, the TIM duo of Red Yoshida and Golgo Matsumoto hosts the show. They also have other supplementary adult emcees for certain segments like Kami-Foot Touchdown and their live Thursday broadcasts.

The setting is changed every year with the exception of 2005 and 2006 where they still retain the Yugeder aerial city. Segments are also changed except for popular ones like MTK and Kami-Foot. Live broadcasts are aired every Thursday where they read fanmails, have interactive games, live reports and features, announce birthdays, showcase special reports and even giving a surprise party to a birthday celebrant!

Season breaks are from late July to September and from early December to mid-January. In those periods, only compilations of reruns are aired.

TTK switched to HDTV broadcast in 2005 but later returned to the SDTV format in just a few months because of picture problems.

Indoor Kites

Flying indoors - it can't be possible - unless you have fans of course!!! Wrong. Recent technology in kiteflying allows incredibly light kites to be made that only require 1 or 2 mph wind. In this context 'wind' just means a flow of air pass the kite. That flow can be provided by the kiteflyer walking back at the required speed. In a large indoor area great displays can be put on. As the kiteflyer reaches one side they just fly the kite over their head and start walking in the other direction. Alternatively the kiteflyer can turn on the spot, again providing thrust to the kite and therfore keeping it in the air.

Alan Burridge (Alan Charles Burridge) Born Poole, Dorset UK 7th May 1951.

Alan Burridge has been editor and organiser for Motorhead's 'Motorheadbangers' Fan Club since late 1979, and lately has the role of Motorhead biographer. As Fan Club output, 76 fanzines have been produced to date, the covers illustrated on www.alanburridge.freeuk.com An ardent music fan since seeing The Shadows at Bournemouth Winter Gardens in 1960, this love of music and the business behind it led to the punk era creation (with Motorhead's permission) of the first fanzine dedicated soley to the band in Motorhead Magazine in 1980. Carrying on hand-in-hand with Helen Taylor's 'official' Motorheadbangers Fan Club until 1983, when Helen moved on to other things, the band suggested he roll both Helen's efforts along with his own into the Fan Club run by him. This he has done throughout the ensuing years, and in the tradition set by the band of not ripping anyone off and giving value for money, has established Motorheadbangers as a Fan Club of high integrity. This has been recognised by Motorhead as Burridge is credited, along with the Fan Club address on every official album release throughout the years; and is also credited on the band's website of www.imotorhead.com Bibliography: Motorhead (Babylon Books 1981) ISBN 0.86001.935.7

Advocate Marketing

Advocate Marketing is a sales technique - it involves getting a network of contacts to sell on your behalf. Business people meet at organised networking events (lunches, dinners, pubs and bars) and then start introducing themselves to other attendees.

The aim of the networking events is a) to learn about other peoples' businesses that might give you a product that you know will fit into your existing customers' requirements, b) learn new tips and tricks or gain experience, c) create a network of people who are able to understand your product offerings so that they will upsell you/your products to their acquaintances or existing cusomters (Advocate Marketing).

There may or may not be a fee involved in this passing on of your information to a potential customer; some do it on the Karma principle (what goes around comes around) others will openly state a percentage system for all closed new business they introduced.

Widham, Wiltshire

The name Widham comes up on many web sites but with no information on the place, so the following is to give a little insight and history of where we are.

We are on current OS maps and maps dating back to the 1700’s. To include Andrews’ and Dury’s Map of Wiltshire, 1773, Andrews’ and Dury’s Map of Wiltshire, 1810 and the 1896 OS map.

Widham is a small hamlet which is now encompassed within the village and Parish of Purton, Wiltshire.

Originally Widham was a few houses along the Highway and parts of Witts Lane and the Toll House at Collins Lane, with Widham Common in the centre. Purton eventually engulfed the Hamlet and only one small area is now left known as ‘Widham’ and this was split in two during the mid 19th Century when the railway line was built between Swindon and Gloucester.

Widhill, in the Parish of Cricklade, can be found approximately 4 miles to the north near to the A419 at Blunsdon.

During the Enclosure Act the Common at Widham was Awarded to the Earl of Shaftsbury, with 'foot rights' to the cottages around the common to the highway which had been a private road with Tolls collected at the Toll House. The highway at this time became a public road however Tolls continued to be collected into the 1800's.

Pincocks Orchard, being one of the last remaining private Orchards in Purton and dating from the 1700's lies behind the houses on the south of the railway. Originally Thomas Rincock's Orchard and now reduced in size to around half an acre. Planted with Greengage and other fruit trees.

Meaning of the word ‘Widham’ could come from two words - Druid and Hamlet.

The word 'Dru- wid' means 'oak-knowledge' and 'Ham' meaning Homestead or pennisular. (On the Andrews & Drurys Maps, 1773 & 1810, of Wiltshire, Widham can be seen within the centre of two small rivers/streams, which lead into the River Ray, which feeds into the River Thames at Cricklade.) The English word 'wisdom' traces its origins to the Primitive German word Wid, meaning 'to know'. Wid in turn, is derived from the Sanskrit word Veda, meaning 'External Knowledge'

In 1966 a group of concerned citizens of Launceston recognised the need for a community based, non-religious, non-political organisation to be established offering friendship to people suffering loneliness, alcoholism, suicidal tendencies, financial difficulties and other problems causing emotional hardship.

Following extensive discussions and deliberations as to how best to set up such a service, in December 1968 a limited roster of specially trained volunteers commenced a telephone befriending service with the eventual aim of establishing a 24 hour caring, confidential and non-judgemental service.

1989 saw a Face-to-face befriending service introduced to provide a short term caring relationship which aims to help people to discover and use the strengths within themselves, as well as the resources available within the community.

In November 1996 a “1300” telephone number was introduced to cater to callers from beyond the Launceston area, extending this service to callers anywhere in Tasmania for the cost of a local call.

Lifelink Samaritans are active in service to youth particularly in the area of suicide awareness and prevention and have produced a booklet entitled Youth Suicide—a Guide for Parents as well as a Youth Card which provides telephone contacts who will listen and help our young people.

Lifelink Samaritans Tasmania Incorporated has a strong relationship with The Samaritans in the UK and has a “twin” relationship with the Northampton branch of the organisation there. We are also forging a stronger relationship with Samaritans in Western Australia and look forward to developing this in the near future.

In recent times the organisation undertook to man a site at the annual Agfest, which allowed us to disseminate information to a wider audience, both local and interstate, and provide literature covering the services we currently offer to all Tasmanians in need of emotional support.

Nominal funding assistance is received from the Tasmanian Government, but the organisation relies heavily on the generosity of the Tasmanian people to sustain its services. All members of Lifelink Samaritans are volunteers and no honoraria are paid to office bearers.

Vision Statement

To consolidate and develop Lifelink Samaritans Tasmania Incorporated as a highly trained, caring, community-based volunteer organisation that provides 24 hour confidential, free telephone befriending service as well as face-to-face befriending and a range of other facilities providing information to meet changing community needs.

Ercole Spada

Ercole Spada (August 26, 1938) is an Italian automobile designer. His most notable designs were made in the 1960s, for the Zagato design studio house, where Spada was chief stylist. During this period some of the most notable sportcars by Aston Martin, Ferrari, Maserati, as well as Alfa Romeo, Abarth, Fiat and Lancia were clothed by Spada's designs.

Spada earned a degree in Industrial Engineering from all'istituto tecnico Feltrinelli in 1956. Following a military service, Spada joined Zagato, in February 1960. The first design created by Spada for Zagato was the Aston Martin DB4 GT Zagato. Many avantgarde yet instantly-classic designs were to follow, soon becoming cornerstones of automotive design. Spada's designs were acknowledged as seminal by his fellow designers as well as by generetions of new designers; One example of the attraction of Spada's work was that of the Mazda MX-3, which aimed to capture the magic of the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTZ design, according to its creators. Shortly before leaving Zagato, Spada designed one of the most modern looking cars of the era, the Alfa Romeo Junior Z, as well as the popular and dramatic Lancia Fulvia Sport.

Spada joined Ford in 1970 to become chief designer at the Italian Ghia design house. This led to the creation of the ill-fated Ford GT70, which did not enter production at the last moment.

After leaving Ford and following a short stay in Audi, Spada joined BMW design center as chief stylist in 1976. During his stay with BMW, Spada created two major all-new designs, the BMW E32 7-series (1987–1994), and the BMW E34 5-series (1989-1996). Both embraced similar classic yet progressive lines, contributing to the success of the German company.

In 1983 Spada returns to lead an Italian design house, this time I.DE.A. where he designs a strings of compact and luxury cars, for Fiat – the groundbreaking Tipo and Tempra siblings, the Lancia Dedra and Delta II as well as the Kappa. Other projects include the Alfa Romeo 155 and the Daihatsu Move. During his stay in I.DE.A. Spada had competed and won over major design contracts from Fiat, putting him in direct competition with his fellow Italian design maverick, Giorgetto Giugiaro, born on the same year and on the same month as Spada.

Returning to Zagato in 1992, Spada brought with him new creative energy, which led to the introduction of the Ferrari FZ93, based on a regular 512 TR mechanics, as well as other notabe designs.

Currently, Spada continues to work as a designer. He has joined his son, Paulo Spada, to create Spadaconcept, a new design house aimed at automotive and industrial design.

Book of Questions

A New York Times bestseller with over 1.9 million copies in print, THE BOOK OF QUESTIONS is written by Gregory Stock and poses 265 questions that invite people to explore the subject of themselves. These questions centre on people's fundamental values and beliefs regarding sex, money, love, and power. In addition, to exploring dreams and nightmares.

Some questions are based on value-testing hypothetical situations, like "Would you accept 20 years of extraordinary happiness and fulfillment if it meant you would die at the end of the period?", others ask you to delve into your past (When is the last time you stole anything?) and help you find out if you've changed (Would you now return it if you could?), while other questions reveal your basic nature by examining your behavior (When you are given a compliment do you usually acknowledge it or suggest that you really do not deserve it?).

The book can be used as an avenue for personal growth, a tool for deepening relationships, or simply as entertainment. The book challenges, and even changes the way readers view the world, without offering a single opinion of its own.

Dittrich family

The aristrocratic family with the Dietrich name was first recorded in the 10th century according to Immanuel Kant's scriptures. Believed to be the involved from with the Hapsburg blood line, based in Switzerland. The Dietrich name carried the blood line of Rudolph II. The name was changed to Dittrich afterwards for political reasons. The family line settled in Bohemia in 'Novy Knin', then migrated to 'Praha' (Prague). After the first and second world wars the family title was stripped. During communism in 1945 the family assets were taken and used by the state. Modern descendants still remain in Prague, Vienna, Berlin, and many other european cities.

Eldwist

The city of Eldwist is recognized by its complete lack of color. It has no color because the city, all of it buildings and its vegetation have been turned to rock by the Stone King, Uhl Belk. The city of Eldwist is eventually emancipated from its stony demise by a young woman elemental named Quickening. Quickening is daughter to the King of the Silver River, Uhl Belk’s brother. Quickening is infused with the magic of her father to bring life wherever she goes. She gives herself sacrificially for her father’s vision to free the region at the tip of the Stiehl; Pe Ell’s deadly weapon.

Souhthfield School

Southfield School was founded in 1992 as a sister school to Dexter School for boys. With a wide range of offerings, Southfield offers challenging yet individualized programs in kindergarten through grade 12. It assists girls in their formative years to develop academic skills as well as desirable social, moral, and spiritual attitudes and habits to the end that they may make positive contributions to society. Single gender classes enable students to have a focused learning environment where excellence and personal achievement are valued and encouraged. Within such a nurturing climate, girls can build self-confidence and realize their potential as both students and individuals. In addition, the physical education, intramural, and interscholastic athletic programs provide a platform from which girls can develop athletic skills, good sportsmanship, a competitive spirit, and a healthy, active lifestyle under the caring supervision of faculty coaches who serve as positive role models.

Southfield shares the 36-acre site on the Boston-Brookline border with Dexter. The fine facilities serve both school communities well. Four athletic fields, including a multi-purpose turf field, two ice rinks, a swimming pool, gymnasium, art and music studios, as well as the Clay Center for Science and Technology with its world renowned observatory, are integral to a Southfield girl’s school experience. The Briarwood Marine Science Center on Cape Cod is an exciting extended campus where students can explore and investigate the world beneath the water.

Southfield School continues to address the wishes of many families who seek a girls’ school option for their daughters in the greater Boston area. Prospective families and students may arrange a visit to learn more about the School. We look forward to seeing you.

Southfield is known for its classical-based curriculum that focuses on the elements of learning: effective oral and written communication, critical reading skills, understanding of problem solving in mathematics, and a solid foundation in the natural and social sciences. Classes in the elementary grades are focused on skill development, in order that, in the middle and upper schools, students will be able to draw on those skills to master material of increasing complexity.

The Mark on the Wall

The Mark on the Wall was written by Virginia Woolf in 1921. It is a short story that deals with a woman, with a wandering mind, who sits in a room and questions what a mark on her wall is. While debating this idea, she also discusses many problems with humanity, such as modesty, the meaning of life, and the validity of truth and history.

Trivia

  • Indie rock band Modest Mouse got their name from this passage, "I wish I could hit upon a pleasant track of thought, a track indirectly reflecting credit upon myself, for those are the pleasantest thoughts, and very frequent even in the minds of modest mouse-coloured people, who believe genuinely that they dislike to hear their own praises."

Daubhill this place, pronounced 'dobble' by the locals, the name was probably derived from the fact that daub, and old name for clay, could be obtained, used as a building material. Founded near T and J Higsons Brickworks on Bella Street supplied the area with bricks during the 19th century.

A lower district is Sunning Hill.

Charles N. Alexander

Charles N. "Skip" Alexander (1949-1998) was an american psychologist known for researching the effects of Transcendental Meditation (TM).

He received an A.B. from Harvard University in 1972, his M.S. from the University of California in Santa Cruz in 1975. He got his A.M. in 1981 and his Ph.D. in 1982 from Harvard. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Alexander was a member of the Faculty of Medicine of the Division on Aging at Harvard University from 1982 to 1984. From 1984 until his death in 1998, he was a faculty member of the Department of Psychology at Maharishi University of Management (M.U.M.).

He created a thoretical integration of developmental psychology with the Vedic psychology of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. According to his research, TM accelerates development in children, "unfreezes" development in prison inmates, advances ego development in adults, increases productivity in businesses, decreases blood pressure, increases longevity, effectively treats substance abuse, and reduces prison recidivism. He also conducted research that pointed to benefits of collective practice of TM (controversially supporting the much-criticized "Maharishi Effect").

An amazing course...

An amazing truth about an amazing course!

So what is so important about this guy? He just not aims to become an Aerospace Engineering, he also wants the young generation to know more about this subject. Even if many people hear about it, they fail to give due importance to know more about this wonderful course.

Hariharan C Vittal, is soon going to be an Aerospace Engineer. He will be graduating from the University of Southampton,UK.

Of course, the internet has vast information and anyone can browse through them... The importance of this course or its future is not mentioned in most of the top reviews. At first when he tried to get information in the internet about Aerospace as a course of study, he was disappointed about it... the websites had outdated information on the course and it gave a dull feeling about it. Later due to his own interest he came to know about the importance and how exciting the course is through some other relevant source.

Let us forget about the developed countries, most people living there probably get the right information because they go to the right place. In developing and under-developed countries, the only place where information is available a click away is the Internet. It is so important to make the first impression the best, So thats why even though lots of information are given across the net, he wanted the public to know that the subject is not as future-less as mentioned in most reviews.

It was his wish to interpret this valuable information to people around the globe, hence posted in the fastest growing Wikipedia, through which people can gain valuable information. We would like to thank them a lot for giving the opportunity to convey our message. It is his wide knowledge and skills, that is going to help him be the best in his profession. Let us all wish the very best for his future, who cares about other's.

Tabashir or Tabasheer

Tabashir

Tabasheer

A substance that forms at the joints of some bamboo canes. It consists of silica (SiO2) and perhaps silicic acid (H2SiO3) It is used in some traditional health remedies mostly in areas where bamboo is found and used in large quantities. Some people recommend it as a mineral supplement in human diets. It can be fused into glass at very high temperatures. Many plants such as wheat straw also contain a form of silica. Kieselguhr or diatomaceus earth is the siliceous remains of skeletons of diatoms microscopic sea animals, and was used to absorb nitroglycerin to make one form of dynamite that was much safer to handle. Dynamite was the invention of Alfred Nobel and was the source of money for the Nobel prizes.

Flutter Monkey

The discovery of a new subspecies of Temminckii ape, the monos mariposas, in the late 1980s, deep within the thickets of Gambia's Abuko Nature Reserve, caught the world's scientific community by surprise. Today little is known about the mariposas family of wild red colobus monkey (Procolobus Badius Temminckii), better known as the "Flutter." Pronounced "Fluu-ter," this name was adapted by colonists in the 18th century from a similar word used by natives meaning "flying sun-dog." With only a handful of modern-day captures, none of which has survived entrapment in captivity, it is widely believed that the Flutter subspecies of red colobus is close to extinction on the islands and archipelagos of the Gambia river. This is primarily as a result of wetland habitat loss, a number of introduced hominid viruses, and over hunting by local tribesman. A few environmentalist organizations dedicated to the preservation of the species have spearheaded initiatives with governmental officials throughout much of the Gambian River's aluvial system in an attempt to reclaim vital breeding ground for the species. Except for a handful of pictorial references in cave paintings and ancient carvings, no photograph of the mariposas subspecies of colobus is known to presently exist within the public domain. Much of what is known is based on field research by biologists Erica Dawn Starin of the UAWF (United Abuko Wildlife Federation) and Michael Lawson of the OJA.

Screaming Fishies in their dishies

A gloucester duet, and viewed by many as the best musical performers in the world, there storie is as follows :

"We started our band in the far east of asia, whilst trudging erotically through a desert with nothing but 5 goldfish and a snail called rodger to keep us company. Unfortunatly, rodger died :( RIP RODGER! u made a very good companion indeed. He burnt and shrivilled up under the harsh rays of the sun. a bit like out good chum steve irwin, but he died under the harsh rays of the sea!! anyways, we like very much to eat and drink tea. Yes we eat teabags its a good thing to do, and one day we want to go to heaven. we like bicycles and aqua-aerobics very much too. tempest records signed us up after we sent off out first demo tape - the way of the anarchist seal. They were very impressed, and said that perhaps we'd have done better off on crass records cause we were a bit hardcore, but we said crass were a bit under us. so we went for tempest. i suppose, we quandered, that they would do."

Artists Jed and ursula are very very proud of their work

Jingle Bail

Jingle Bail is an annual charity event, organised by a New Zealand radio station known as The Edge, the name of which is perhaps in reference to the lead guitarist of U2, of the same name. Each year in one of the weeks leading up to Christmas, the morning radio announcers (the "Morning Madhouse") are locked in a makeshift jail cell, in an area with much public exposure and foot traffic, such as a shopping mall. The "inmates" live in this prison for one week, even staying within it overnight whilst loud machines shine the floor and bright lights flood the empty mall. During the day while consumers go about their Christmas shopping, the Morning Madhouse (which currently comprises of Jay Jay Feeney, Dominic Harvey and Mike Puru) collect donations from the public. People are able to make contributions by giving the money to one of the collectors in person, sending in cheques/cash, or ringing a designated 0900 number. Over the course of the week, the DJ's will make pleas for donations, and carry out such dares as kissing celebrities and getting their hair shaved in exchange for money. The New Zealand equivalent of ebay, www.trademe.co.nz, is also used in order to raise funds. The radio station collects signed paraphernalia which is put onto this website, the proceeds of which contribute to Jingle Bail.

Money raised goes towards a "trip of a lifetime" experience for a group of very deserving Kiwi kids, and their caregivers. These children are nominated by their parents, classmates, teachers, friends and relatives, who are listeners of the popular radio station. Many of them, at a young age, have experienced disabilities, severe illnesses, abuse, or bereavement. These kids are taken to the Gold Coast, Australia, where famous themeparks such as Dreamworld and Movieworld are open at night especially to cater for them. The aim of Jingle Bail is to present a group of unique children with the oppurtunity to experience fun in a safe and very positive environment, with the option also to bond with peers who have been through similar ordeals. It also allows parents of these children a rare period of relaxation. For many previous Jingle Bail kids, this trip is their first trip overseas.

Over the past six years, over 80 children and their caregivers have had the privilege of going on the Jingle Bail Trip. In 2005, over $151,000 (NZD) was raised.

Notre Dame of Dadiangas University

History

1953

This year marked the modest beginning of an educational institution-the Notre Dame of Dadiangas College that was just then appended to Notre Dame of Lagao High School. The Marist Brothers with their noble teaching apostolate took the initial step of establishing a temporary building to accommodate young boys and girls longing to be educated under the Marist system which was then administered by Bro. Edmund Conrad, FMS. Expectedly, multi-furious problems cropped up in the process but due to the untiring efforts of the Marist Brothers these were consequently solved giving way to fruitful existence in the area.

1955

The Notre Dame of Dadiangas College was made independent of Lagao. With the Marist pioneers like Bro. Alfredo George, Bro. Michael O'Keefe and Bro. Robert Baptist, a building program was established on an ideal site in the town of Dadiangas.

1958-1961

The site was obtained after the Marist Brothers won the case. Thus, the proposed building was erected solely for the male students as the Dominican Sisters took care if the school for the females. It was during this period when the school opened its doors for college students. Classes were held after regular school hours. Bro. Patrick Nicholas, FMS was the president. With the support of his sister, Bro. Patrick also organized the elementary department filling the need for good education during the formative years of young individual.

1961-1965

With the foundation laid by Bro. Patrick Nicholas, FMS, Bro. Michael O'Keefe, FMS strengthened classroom instruction. Since he believed in wholesome development of students, he also paid particular attention to extra-curricular activities via sports. He left a lasting memory on Notre Dame for he was so lovable, fair and tactful in making decisions.

1965-1972

During the administration of Bro. Henry Joseph Ruiz, FMS the cornerstone of the three-story building was laid. This marks his great achievement for he was no here to start it out but to complete it. Through his effort, NDDC has become a landmark of the best education channel in the area. With his edifice, enrolment soared in all levels.

1972-1973

Since teachers are considerable to be vital instrument in the Marist apostolate for education, Bro. Herbert Daniel, FMS considered their plight that he made it possible for them to receive a pay commensurate to their noble efforts.

1976-1979

To uplift the intellectual standard of the college, Bro. Paul Meuten, FMS prepared the institution for PAASCU Accreditation. He was also responsible for the enlargement of book collection in the library for wider instructional references.

1979-1981

NDDC got its first accreditation of PAASCU during the administrative stint of Bro. James Mcknight, FMS. With him, the NDDC chapel was built and Audio Visual Room was installed. To widen NDDC's educational service a computer program was started during a period and the Marist Technical Training Program (MTTP) was established for the out- of-school youth in the area.

1982-1985

NDDC continues to uplift educational standards in two-pronged direction that caters to both students and teachers. Faculty development had been given considerable attention. Bro. Robert McGovern, FMS had his share of fund raising for this purpose. Bro. Manuel P. Uluan, FMS was given a major role in NDDC administrative hierarchy. Now Business Resource Center (BRC) in the new Student Center had been added to the present development of the school. Indeed, NDDC has already produce a bunch of professionals who are successful in their respective fields of endeavor.

1985-1986

Bro. Leonard James Sonza was assigned to a one-year presidency of NDDC. Under his administration, on June 7,1986, Notre Dame of Lagao was officially dissolved and incorporated to Notre Dame of Dadiangas College. It was during Bro. Sonza's term that the first classes of BS Civil Engineering and BS Nursing were accepted at NDDC.

1986-1992

Bro. Crispin Betita, FMS, started his first year of two-term presidency. Under Bro. Betita, NDDC obtain its LEVEL 3 PAASCU accredited status. During his administration several funds that "took care" of the future was established, the major ones are the development fund and the retirement fund. The community extension program established during his term were the Early Childhood Extension Program (ECE) and the Marcellin House for Street Children. The Business Resource Center (BRC) became a foundation independent of NDDC. During his term, the graduate school, the BS Civil Engineering and BS Nursing programs graduated their first graduates. In SY 1991-1992, during Bro. Betita's last year as president, a faculty development program was implemented, which put emphasis on newly hired teachers being required to enroll in the graduate school. This was a very significant development as the accreditation program of the school relied first and foremost on faculty qualification. This was also the beginning of a culture change among teachers who previously did not show interest in NDDC and nearby school graduate programs. In the years prior to SY 1991-92, very few NDDC teachers enrolled in its own graduate school. This faculty development program was also coupled with bigger increase in masters' degree holders' salaries. It was an important incentive for the faculty to earn higher degree. The construction of Bro. Damian Teston building in the Lagao campus and the Bro. Theodore Building for the elementary department was also undertaken during Bro. Betita'a administration.

1992-1995

Bro. Briccio J. Baynosa, FMS, a son of General Santos City, was appointed president of NDDC. Under him the Bachelor of Science in Computer Science was born and the Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering was conceived.

1995-Present

Bro. Wilfredo E. Lubrico, FMS, was appointed president of NDDC. This was the beginning of a two-term presidency. Among his immediate priorities were the long-delayed updating of facilities and the opening of the new programs. The degree program Bachelor of Science in Industrial Engineering was opened. New major subject under existing programs were also opened: For Bachelor of Arts program, there were Psychology, Mass Communication and Political Science; for BS Elementary Education, there was Music, Arts and Physical Education (MAPE); and for BS Secondary Education, there was Physical Education, Health and Music (PEHM). In SY 1997-98, NDDC applied for permits to operate new courses, and in SY 2000-2001, it obtained permits for the following BS in Electrical Engineering, BS in Biology, Bs Library Science and Information Services and BS in Electronics and Communications Engineering. The CPA Review Center was also opened. In the light of St. Marcellin's concern for the poor, three programs were opened: the elementary extension classes at Espina campus with socialized tuition, the free night high school in Lagao campus and the Marcellin Special Program (MSP) for the college composed of remedial English, Reading, and Mathematics. These developments were doubly significant as they took place close to the canonization of St. Marcellin Champagnat on April 18, 1999. With the 27 years gap between the construction of the Ruiz Hall in 1968 and the six-classroom Bagares Building 1995. Bro. Lubrico assumed the presidency at a time when the fast growing school badly needed additional classroom and facilities. During the next years from 1990 to year 2000 several major constructions were undertaken: the Sonza building which currently houses the library, the Auditorium, several offices and classrooms for the elementary, and the Conrad building which houses the nursing, engineering and practical arts laboratories.

Rolo To The Rescue (MegaDrive)

Rolo To The Rescue (Known as 'Zou! Zou! Zou! Rescue Daisenryaku' in Japan) is a side-scrolling platformer created by Vectordean and published by Electronic Arts. Rolo To The Rescue's main charecter is an elephant who sadly gets kidnapped to perform in a circus for the evil McSmiley. He finally manages to escape however, by going toe to toe with McSmiley and taking his master key. This key allows Rolo to unlock cages found thoughout each level, and free other trapped animals. This turns out to be very important, as each animal has their own special action and Rolo will need this to move further on.

Up to three animals can travel with Rolo at a time -- if he frees a fourth, the first will leave your clan. Common companions include the rabbit, who can leap far, the squirrel, who can climb walls, the mole, who can burrow through soft ground, and the beaver, who can safely enter water. Though each of these skills may be critical to completing the adventure, Rolo has a number of formidable talents of his own. He can run, jump, and take out enemies with a Mario-style "butt bounce". Certain power-ups also allow him to suck solid balls into his trunk and blow them out at enemies, shrink in size, or shoot phaser style bullets. Rolo moves along at a good pace, but he skids when he stops, making it more of a challenge to halt short of sudden danger or land on narrow platforms. In the opinion of this critic, this game is PROPER BO!!

This is NOT an on-line game as Daniel_123 seems to think

Area 54 (Band)

Area 54 formed in 1997. They combine the sound of old-skool & modern rock/metal. The band continue to build a very diverse fan base because of this. Area 54 have released two albums so far, 'No Visible Scars' & their follow up 'Beckoning of the End' (which has ex-At the Gates frontman, Tomas Lindberg guesting on). Both albums show a band capable of mixing styles, but always done with melody & catchy hooks! For the track 'Living A Lie' AREA 54 made their first video, which can be found on the 'BOTE' album. To date, the band have played around the UK, Holland, and Germany with acts such as Gilby Clarke (ex-Guns n' Roses) Blaze (ex-Iron Maiden) Overkill, Saxon & Kill 2 This, amongst others. Area 54 cut a two track demo 'My Hate' & 'Losing Grip' several months ago and are currently in the studio recording a new full length album, which will be followed by a tour & as many gigs as the band can possibly do!

Ghost of Mt Maria

Although there are no official documents, detailing the story of the ghost Teresa, as a student the story was told to my year group, in 2005 at a school assembly.

The Facts.

The school was used as a boarding house for intellectually disabled, wayward and “troubled” girls in the mid 1930s. The events in this story did in fact happen, a girl named Teresa did die in the original school building, which is still an actively used part of the school to this day, the room in which she died however, is locked and boarded and cannot be accessed. However, the existence of a ghost or lingering spirit in the school is debatable. The boarding school was closed down in the 1970s but the legend of Teresa is still present in the school.

The Story.

Before the Mt Maria Mitchelton campus was a co-education school it was used as a boarding house for “Troubled” young girls. Among these girls was one exceptional girl, whom they called Teresa. She was said to be quiet and withdrawn. It was Teresa’s responsibility to take the horses on the property, down to the river to drink. The river is today known as “Kedron Brook”. One day while she was down at the river she saw a young boy, not much older than herself who was the son of a local farmer. Teresa, at first did not speak to the boy, but as days went on, she would see him at the river every morning. Eventually the two spoke, and became close friends. They arranged to meet one night at the river. But, rumor has it the nuns who ran the boarding school at the time, discovered Teresas secret meetings with the young boy and refused to let Teresa see the boy again. To ensure that Teresa could not leave the school, the nuns locked her in the highest room in the school, the attic or “Upstairs” as it’s referred to by students. Teresa was devastated and yelled and screamed and beat on the door of the attic for hours. Soon she gave up and huddled in the corner of the tiny room. Teresa wondered if the young boy would be waiting by the river, as he was unaware she had been locked up. The tiny room had only one window, which faces in the direction of the now present, Mitchelton train station. Unable to see out the window to the river, Teresa stood on a chair and leant closer to the window, in hope of seeing the young boy. Teresa leant to far and the chair beneath her slipped and she fell into the window. It’s believed she suffered substantial wounds to her neck and possibly wrists when she broke the windowpane. The bleeding would have been intense. Teresa, lay on the floor, trying to cry out, and used her last ounces of strength to pound her hands on the floor or the attic, trying to get the attention of the nuns, one of whom had an office below the attic. It’s believed the nuns did hear Teresa cries but dismissed them. Teresa died, alone in the attic that day. Suffering from blood loss and possibly shock. It is unclear how long Teresa’s body was in the attic before the nuns found it. It was only after the blood from her wounds soaked through the cracks in the wooden floor of the attic, and dripped down into the nuns office below, that anyone went up to the room. Details of her burial are unknown, and copies of her death certificate are unlikely to still exist.

Today.

To this day, and ever since the death of Teresa the “Upstairs” room of the school and been locked and boarded as has the window, which can be seen from the front of the school. In the past some students have been allowed to visit the room, but this has not been practiced for many years now. Many people have claimed to have seen the ghost of Teresa, or her spirit in physical apperations around the school. Several of the original staff who still work at the school have stories of their own regarding the ghost.

On the Mt Maria homepage, the ghost of Teresa gets a brief mention, in the “history” of the school, in the third paragraph down. [14]

Tugby

Australian slang for gay men. Lots of tugbies are always seen in Sydney during Mardi Gras. Origin is unknown but it the use of the word has been increasing recently. Apparently it has to be with Charles Dickens's "The Chimes" and Mr Tugby behaviour. It is also related to the appearance of a soft toy called "Tugby" whose pink ears remind those wore by some of the gay men during the mardi gras parade.

Newtown, the suburb where Mardi Gras is hosted every year is known as "Tugbyland"
