Indian National Satellite System
Indian National Satellite System (INSAT) is a series of multipurpose satellites launched by ISRO for telecommunications, broadcasting, meteorology, and search and rescue services. Commissioned in 1983, INSAT was the largest domestic communication system in the Asia-Pacific Region. By 2003 it comprised five satellites - Insat-2DT, Insat-2E, Insat-3B, Insat-3C and Metsat. INSAT-2DT was acquired from Arabsat because of failure of INSAT-2D
Insat has twelve C band transponders, six extended C band transponders and two high power S-band transponders. The meteorological payload includes a Very High Resolution Radiometer (VHRR) with 2Kkm resolution in the visible band and 8Kkm in the Infrared bands, and a transponder for meteorological data relay. This satellite also incorporates a transponder for receiving distress alert signals for search and rescue missions. INSAT-2C and 2D have in addition Ku transponders for business communication and extended C band transponders to enable TV programmes outreach beyond India.
