The Mohammadzai are a Pashtun tribe centered around Charsadda, Pakistan. Many Mohammadzais can also be found in Afghanistan near Kabul. The tribe that took the throne from the Durranis after they lost control of the government were the Mohammadzais. The Mohammadzai tribe is one of the most politically active tribes among the Pashtuns. Imporant figures that have their roots in the Mohammadzai tribe are Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan (Bacha Khan), Hamza Khan (Khan Hamza Khan), Zahir Shah and many others. People from this tribe usually have the Yousafzai dialect of Pushto and take pride in their Pashtun inhertence. Mohammadzais who live in the vicinity of Kabul, speak Dari rather than their native Pashto. Mohammadzais have been known to be one of the most fierce tribes in Pushtun society.the current living king of afghanistan mohammad zahir shah is also a relative of mohammadzai.Also one of the well-known people in the history of Afghanistan as known by afghan people as Former Communist PDPA Afghan President Najibullah (Najib-e-Gow) who was executed by the taliban in 1996 when they took control of Kabul.
