Sujatha (b. May 3, 1935) is the pseudonym of the Tamil writer Rangarajan, who has written over 80 novels, 150 short stories, ten science books, ten plays, numerous poems and other articles. He is one of the most celebrated and decorated writers in Tamil literature. He is also a frequent contributor to topical columns in Tamil periodicals such as Kanaiyali, and Ananda Vikatan He has a wide readership. He also served for a brief period as the editor of the periodical Kumudam. He has also written stories, screenplays and dialogues for several Tamil dramas, television serials and movies. In addition, he has contributed to educational CD-ROMs. He is also an active member of the Tamil Movie industry and has penned screen plays for a number of movies.

He also supervised the design and production of the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) during his tenure in Bharat Electronics which is currently used in elections throughout India.


Biography

Sujatha (Rangarajan) was born in Triplicane, Chennai but spent his childhood in Srirangam near Tiruchirapalli under the care of his paternal grandmother owing to the nomadic nature of his father's employment. He went to school in Srirangam and graduated from St.Joseph's College, Trichy. While there he had Abdul Kalam (the future President of India) as his class mate. Later, he received his engineering degree in electronics from the Madras Institute of Technology. His writing interests were largely inspired by the shortstories and serials published in Popular Tamil Magazine Ananda Vikatan. Sriranganthu Devathigal (Angels of Srirangam) is a series of short stories based on the real life incidents unfolded in that part of the world in 1940's and 50's. His first short story Paalam (bridge) was published in the Anandha Vikatan Magazine.

He worked for Bharat Electronics in Bangalore, India as a general manager before his retirement to Chennai, India, where he lives today.

Sujatha received an award from the India's National Council for Science and Technology in 1993 for making science accessible to the public through his books, magazine contributions and television scripts.

In 2006 Sujata started writing a serial in the famous Tamil weekly Ananda Vikatan titled Silvia. The novel is based on the new-found affluence and the careless mindset of the present-day youger generation of India. The Novel is a crime thriller with his famous characters Ganesh and Vasanth.

Style and influence:

Sujatha is a versatile writer in Tamil who has had a prodigious output ranging from short stories, novels, poems, plays, screenplays for movies, articles in popular science other non-fiction articles. Sujatha has written a number of science fiction stories in Tamil and has sought to explain science in very simple terms to a layman. His interests include archeology, astrophysics, Biotechnology, neuro sciences, Karnatic music, Tamil literature, sociology and others.
