Seoul (In Han'gul: 서울; in Hanja:漢&#22478 ), formerly called Hanseong or Hanyang, is the capital of South Korea, located in the north-west of the country, on the river Han. It has a population of approximately 10 million people, making it one of the largest cities in the world.

The city came to be called Seoul in 1394 meaning capital in Korean, during the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910).

Its role as capital was interrupted during the Japanese occupation of Korea 1910-1945, when the Japanese reduced it to an administrative city, and during the Korean War.

Seoul was the host city of the 1988 Summer Olympics.
