The Porsche 356 was according to some the original Porsche automobile (others say the Porsche 64), created by Ferry Porsche using parts and knowledge from the Volkswagen factory. It was available as both a coupé and a roadster. The car body was designed by Erwin Komenda.

The car bears a close resemblance to the Volkswagen Beetle, including an air-cooled, rear-mounted, flat-4 cylinder engine.

The 356 was introduced in the 1948 and was replaced by the Porsche 911 and the Porsche 912 in 1963 although 356s were sold in the United States until 1965.
