Beit Lahia (Arabic: بيت لاهية) is a Palestinian town of about 40,000 people in the northern Gaza Strip. It is located north of Jabalia, near Beit Hanoun and the border with Israel. Hamas, an Islamic party, took control of it during the 2005 municipal elections.

2006 killings

On June 9, 2006, eight civilians were killed while picnicing on the northern Gazan beach in Beit Lahia. The dead included five members of the Ali Ghaliya family (Ali Ghaliya; his wife, Raisa; and three children, ages 1, 3 and 10); a sister who was swimming was unhurt.[1]

The incident led the miltary wing of Hamas to revoke its truce with Israel. [1]
