The list of important opera companies is comprised of 61 established, full-time opera companies that present performances during an annual season, selected on various criteria.

The criteria used in selecting the companies that appear in this list include:

  • present artistic standing of the company;
  • number of ensemble members;
  • size of budget;
  • number of performances and seats sold each year;
  • historical importance of the company and its associations with famous composers, singers, and conductors.
