Heredity (the ajective is hereditary) refers to the process of characters being passed from parent to offspring, either through their genes or through the social institution called inheritance (for example, a title of nobility is passed from individual to individual according to relevant customs and/or laws).

Bloodline is a term describing one's familial ancestry.

As a term in biology, it is effectively a pseudonym for genetics, since biological information is passed on as genes. A leading scientific journal, founded by Ronald Fisher and C. D. Darlington is entitled Heredity
