Brodmann area 17
Brodmann area 17, or BA17, is part of the occipital cortex in the human brain. It is the most caudal structure in the brain. Situated around the calcarine sulcus, this structurally-defined area is identical to the functionally defined primary visual cortex. It receives signals relayed via the lateral geniculate nucleus from the retina.
Neurons in Brodmann area 17 respond selecitvely to simple visual features, such as line segments of a certain orientation, in a particular part of the visual field (known as the neuron's receptive field).
The neurons in Brodmann area 17 are arranged to form a retinotopic map.
