The fifth season of American Idol began on January 17, 2006 and will end on May 24, 2006.

Auditions

Auditions were held in seven cities in the summer and early fall of 2005 in the following order:

Hollywood

Among the contestants who made it past the audition round and to Hollywood are:

  • Brooke and Leah Barrettsmith -- sisters, auditioned together in Chicago, profiled as "small town" girls.
  • Derrell and Terrell Brittenum -- older set of twins that auditioned together in Chicago.
  • Chris Daughtry -- profiled as a "Rocker Dad." Auditioned in Denver.
  • Rochelle-Elaine Dye -- came to her Denver audition with several friends and family who had her named spelled out in t-shirts. Said she was about to be evicted.
  • Gina Glocksen -- profiled as a dental assistant and the lead singer in an all-girl band, auditioned in Chicago.
  • David Hoover -- aka "Crazy Dave", sent through by Randy and Paula in Chicago. He is the first "bad" singer ever to be sent on to Hollywood.
  • Mandisa Hundley -- after her successful audition in Chicago, Simon made a joke about her size.
  • Garret Johnson -- profiled as the "Wyoming Cowboy," auditioned in Denver, was advised to get voice lessons before going to Hollywood
  • David Radford -- high schooler, crooner. Auditioned in Chicago.
  • Zachary Smits -- 17-year-old, auditioned in Chicago.
  • Joshua and Jarrett Simmons -- younger set of twins that auditioned together in Chicago.
  • Lisa Tucker -- Simon called her the "best 16-year-old" ever to audition on the show (Denver).
  • April Walsh -- sang a song by Bjork in Denver.
  • Ace Young -- auditioned in Denver, Randy called him one of the best he'd seen so far this season

Semi-finals and finals

The semi-finals are expected to begin in mid-February. There are no format changes expected from season 4; it will feature 12 male singers and 12 female singers, with two of each being eliminated each week.

Controversy

  • In January 2006, twins Derrell and Terrell Brittenum were charged with forgery and theft after allegedly using a false identity to purchase a car. This occured after the "Hollywood" portion of the show was filmed, and their status on American Idol is unknown. [1]
  • In January 2006, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) accused the show of becoming "increasingly homophobic" after Simon Cowell told one contestant to shave his beard and put on a dress and another contestant's gender was questioned by the judges. [2]
