Jahl is the Arabic word for ignorance, thoughtlessness, arrogance (as opposed to rational judgement) and passion (as opposed to self-control). In Islamic context, it refers mainly to ignorance, a trait strongly looked down upon in Muslim communities, as knowledge of Islam is seen as recognition and acknowledgement of Allah, and therefore as worship.
