Albums

There are a lot of album pages with little more than a track listing. I think all the Wikipedians hate them -- I know I do, but it isn't worth it to delete them. Most are created by anonymous users who'll just recreate them anyway... Tuf-Kat

Atlas Shrugged

Much gracias for the work on Atlas Shrugged!! Tuf-Kat

Hi Catherine, are you changing the Atlas Shrugged stuff by hand or by bot. If you're doing it by hand then I'll try and help a bit tomorrow. I like things to be nice and tidy and the /s horrify me! - Ams80 04:26 Mar 13, 2003 (UTC)

Yes, I'm doing the Atlas Shrugged work by hand. Not changing anything (other than the odd spelling error) -- just consolidating all the Character stubs into one place, and then using "What Links Here" from each stub to send links to the main Characters in Atlas Shrugged page. Right now that means I'm ending up with links like Dagny Taggart, which aren't pretty, but I'll figure out what to do about that when I (or someone else) gets around to working on the chapters themselves.
Thanks for the offer of help! Maybe you could pick a separate topic from the list on Atlas Shrugged (Companies, Concepts, Conflicts, Places, Structure, Symbolism, Technology, Things, Topics of note) and do the same? Just assemble stubs into a list form for now; we can discuss how else to organize/consolidate later. Cheers! Catherine 04:44 Mar 13, 2003 (UTC)
OK, I'm going to give Atlas Shrugged/Places a go. Although the Wikipedia isn't being very co-operative right now. Andrew

I removed the horizontal lines from within the sections of Synopsis of Atlas Shrugged, Chapters 1-5, I find it more readable this way as I find it easier to see which section a particular paragraph is in. If you think it was better the other way then please revert the page to the 12:28 Mar 19, 2003 version which is pretty much how you left it bar a few formatting corrections. Have fun, Andrew

Oh, forgot to say that if you also think it's better this way then I'll do the same for chapters 6 - 10. -- Andrew

Grammy pages

Hi Catherine, It's good to see some more Grammy links going blue :) -- sannse 22:43 Mar 22, 2003 (UTC)

I've just been talking to Tuf-Kat abut standardising the Grammy award pages some more. I'd welcome your opinion if you have a moment? See Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Music standards -- sannse 07:40 Mar 23, 2003 (UTC)

Car/Automobile

It might be a good idea to just change the word "car" to "automobile" (or sports car, or whatever is applicable) in articles. If you leave it as "car" people may create wikis to car in the future with the assumption it is the correct link. -- goatasaur

Why are you changing internationally recognised British english terms to American english, particularly in articles that have NOTHING to do with anything American. I am reverting your changes.

Hi Catherine - the problem with "automobile" is that it just isn't used in British English (well, not in Britain anyway, nor in Ireland judging from JTD's repsonse ;-). Everyone over here says "car", so having "automobile" in the context of an article on a British subject is rather odd. Of course, when it's an American subject, a straight link to "automobile" is fine, but otherwise it's best to pipe them. --Camembert

Hi Catherine, I'll make a suggestion. Instead of replacing car with automobile, replace it with car. The word automobile means absolutely nothing to most people outside the US. Indeed if would simply add to the impression some people get that Wikipedia is americocentric. If the original article said car, or if it is referring to a country that says car, never automobile, car should be the word used. But using carwould allow them to see the word they use while linking directly to the page rather than a disambigulation page. I hope I didn't sound rude. It is just that in the last 24 hours two different people have tried to americanise articles I was working on, in one case an article that was on a topic that not merely had nothing to do with America (it was about England) but predated American english by half a millenium. So I kinda saw red with a case of 'oh, not again' when I saw your renaming. I'll revisit the articles I touched to put in the car link. I hope that is OK with you. Slán. STÓD/ÉÍRE 00:02 Apr 16, 2003 (UTC)

Yeah, Cam is right. Ireland never ever says automobile. In fact anyone using it is likely to be tied up and listened to a tape of the collective wisdoms of the George Bushs, senior and junior, played very very slowly. :-) It is an absolute no no linguistically. STÓD/ÉÍRE 00:02 Apr 16, 2003 (UTC)

See some comments I put on STÓD/ÉÍRE's talk page on, inter alia, some non-automobile uses of the word "car" in British English. PML.

Don't worry about it Catherine - there's no end to the things I don't know about American English :-) We all have our blind spots and you were just trying to do the right thing. Keep up the good work. --Camembert

No problem at all, Catherine. To think, one language and the way American speak it, the Irish speak it and the british speak it, can be so so different. (BTW the version of english in Ireland is called Hiberno-English, just to confuse things more. It uses a slightly different language structure and is much more expressive, because it combines British english and the language structure of the rarely spoken Irish language or gaelic. So ironically, Europeans come to Ireland, not Britain, to learn British English because they think our version is more freeflowing and more interesting!) BTW number 2: I meant to say, you do some great work on wiki. Keep it up. Slán (gaelic for goodbye) STÓD/ÉÍRE 00:14 Apr 16, 2003 (UTC)

What about redirecting automobile to car, and putting a "see also:" at the bottom for the alternate meanings for "car"? -- goatasaur

Hi Catherine, thank you so much for your work on Ms. Humphrey! Lizzy

Insanity

Hi, Catherine
Dunno how far along you are on disambiguating insanity, and if you're done I wouldn't worry about it too much, but if you're not, "mental illness" is a medical term, and "insanity" is a legal term...they're not synonyms. (I pay special attention to Colin Ferguson because I had to fight so hard to make it into a real article<G>) -- Someone else 19:31 Apr 22, 2003 (UTC)

Hi Someone! Re: Colin Ferguson -- I tried to be distinct about insane -- that it was claimed that he was insane (directed to mental illness) and that he refused to plead insanity (directed to insanity defense). Did I miss a subtlety? I did consider rewording the sentence so that it said "refused to use the insanity defense", to remove ambiguity, but it seemed to be fairly carefully composed, so I refrained. Suggestions? --Catherine
Well, for the sake of argument, I'd say that Kuby and Kunstler, being lawyers, were arguing that he was insane (as in insanity defense) not that he was insane (as in mentally ill) though being lawyers they were of course arguing both at the same time <G>. But I don't think it needs to be fixed or worried about, I just wanted to get a precautionary word in if you were going thru all the articles disambiguating. -- Someone else 21:55 Apr 22, 2003 (UTC)

Invitation to Admin

We are trying to increase the number of people who are Wikipedia Administrators. Until now, we've been relying on users to take the initiative to ask for this access themselves but this has resulted in a slow rate Admin rank expansion. So we've gone ahead nominated and approved you and several other long-time users for the account upgrade. This means that your fellow Wikipedians feel that you are a responsible, well-known, and fair-minded user.

Agreeing to be an Administrator does not mean that you are expected to do any additional work above and beyond what you do now ; It just means that we trust you to to have certain privileges and responsibilities that can't be entrusted to random users (such as editing the Main Page, protected policy pages, or banning the IPs of vandals).

All we need from you now is your consent. You can either send an email to WikiEN-L (preferred) or simply state "I agree" on the bottom of this page.

Meelar

I've never seen the movie you mention. "Meelar" is just a corruption of Miller, my last name. I picked it up in roughly 8th grade or so--i.e. 6-7 years ago. Thanks for your kind comments though, Meelar 22:27, 5 Feb 2004 (UTC)

John Taylor

Hi, Catherine. Thanks for the thanks on the John Taylor article. I hope you'll still add more the article. There is so much more that could be said. - Rlvaughn 22:20, 3 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Kimba

No problem on Kimba. I remember it from when I was a kid too, though it must have been re-runs then. All I really remember is the opening sequence, with Kimba running... moink 23:06, 23 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Tintin

Thank you much for your work on the Tintin articles. I haven't read them in years. They needed someone to do them justice. Yours, Meelar 02:49, 24 Mar 2004 (UTC)

Thanks for the kudos. Actually I have an account but I don't often log in because my computer has been refusing to keep me logged in when I reboot, making it a pain in the ass. Montrealais

Duran Duran

Thanks for the confidence in suggesting I review the edits to the Duran Duran entry. It all looks very good. There are a raft of things that could be added, but that I think would be far to much minutia and would on balance give it an over pedantic and obsessive quality. I didn't spot any further real edits to make, though I expanded the passage a bit about Steven Duffy to include references to his subsequent (to Duran) hit "Kiss Me (with your mouth)" which he recorded under the band name Tintin. This might be something you might want to add to your Tintin edits to that article. Anything I can do to fill in the gaps of Duran or 80s music I will gladly do. I want to eventually greatly expand the Gary Numan entry for example. Lestatdelc 21:49, Apr 5, 2004 (UTC)

Images

Catherine, you asked on Wikipedia:SQL query requests for someone to run a query to get all the images you've uploaded. I hacked something up (sans SQL) - here's a list of all the edits you've made to articles with "Image:" in their title. I don't know for sure that this is comprehensive, I'm afraid.
