While popular culture might lead one to believe that Los Angeles consists only of the shiny office towers of downtown, the blighted streets of South Los Angeles, the endless suburban tracts of the San Fernando Valley, and the gated estates of the Hollywood Hills and Bel-Air, its neighborhoods display a degree of diversity well befitting the second-largest city in the United States. Much of this is an artifact of the city's history of growth by annexation, which allowed distinct environments to arise in many areas; indeed, many Los Angeles neighborhoods, such as Venice, Hancock Park and Boyle Heights are fairly close-knit, culturally distinctive communities. While earthquakes and unfortunate urban planning have blurred many of the distinctions between the city's neighborhoods, there is still a great degree of variation to be found within the dozens of communities that together form Los Angeles.

The following are districts and neighborhoods within the city limits of the city of Los Angeles, sorted by region and then alphabetically.
