The Waterloo Tunnel in Liverpool former railway tunnel, 862 metres long, which opened in 1849. One end is at Edge Hill station, the other end opens into a short cutting which connects to the Victoria Tunnel, which leads to the River Mersey. The tunnel closed on 19 November 1972, however a single set of rails still enters the tunnel, and at least on 15 March 2005 the rails where still shiny from recent use.
