Kid (Chrono Cross)

Kid is a fictional, playable character from the Square Co., Ltd. RPG Chrono Cross. She first comes to Serge's aid when he is attacked by Karsh, Solt, and Peppor on Cape Howl. Depending on the player's choices, she may then join the party there, later, or not actually join the party at all for the entire game duration. A member of the band of thieves known as the Radical Dreamers (the other members do not appear in the game), she is one of the only three characters in the game who can steal items from enemies ( Mel and Fargo are the other two) and she provides as a very helpful party member. Whether Kid joins the party on Cape Howl or not, she directs Serge in the direction of Termina, Viper Manor, and her evil foe Lynx.

Recruitment

Kid offers to join Serge towards the beginning of the game, but the player may choose whether to recruit her in Cape Howl, Termina, Viper Manor, or to not actually recruit her for the whole game.

Home World

Template:Spoiler Kid is one of the very few characters of Chrono Cross who does not have an alternate character from a parallel dimension. This is possible evidence of there only being one "Kid" in all dimensions (more information below).

Radical Dreamers

Though characters with the names Serge, Lynx, and Riddel appear the Chrono Trigger sequel Radical Dreamers, they are believed to be a parallel dimension's versions of the Chrono Cross characters. However, in Chronopolis, there is an excerpt from the game in a computer module. If this module is read, Kid identifies these characters as her "old mates," suggesting that she is the same as the Radical Dreamers' character. Some, however, argue that this is just an Easter egg.

Lucca

It is revealed late in the game that Kid was in fact raised in an orphanage owned by the scientific genius of Chrono Trigger, Lucca. As mentioned above, Kid learns her last Tech Skill by entering the password of a machine invented by Lucca's father, Taban. Also mentioned below, Kid's second Tech Skill is a tribute to the Dual Tech between Lucca and Frog in Chrono Trigger.

Schala

Late in the game, it is revealed that Kid is in fact, the daughter-clone of Schala. During the fall of Zeal, Schala was thrown in to Lavos's dimension. She became one with the alien parasite, as the TimeDevourer. When Schala hears the cries of Serge in 1010 A.D. when he is drowned by Lynx, she asexually gives birth to a clone of herself, much in the same way Lavos created the Lavos Spawns. Lucca finds this baby and raises her in her orphanage. Kid then joins Serge in the adventure of Chrono Cross, and then travels back in time to save Serge from being drowned by Lynx. It is often argued that after the events of Chrono Cross, Schala becomes one with Kid.

The Kid-Harle Connection

The apparent lack of Kid's clone in any alternate dimension would also seem to support a theory regarding some strange connection between Kid and Harle. For example, a certain fortune teller in Termina gives personalized readings for each of the game's playable characters. However, she gives identical readings for Kid and Harle: "In your eyes, I percieve...both the look of a beauty and the look of a beast. Be mindful not to bring about your own end, my dear! A dream lies in wait, reaching out to engulf you!" Furthermore, the two closely resemble each other. The game's cinema sequences show close-ups of both Harle and Kid's faces, and it would seem that the two would have identical faces if Harle didn't mask hers with the jester make-up.

Finally, whereas several important characters meet their doppelgangers at some point during the game, neither Kid nor Harle ever meet theirs when treading between the game's two alternate dimensions. This would seem to suggest that the Kid may be Harle's self in another dimension, but this theory negates the plot point about Kid being the daughter-clone of Schala — or Harle being the creation of the Dragon God, for that matter. However, one could argue that since the Time Devourer assimilated both the Dragon God (who created Harle) and Schala (who created Kid), that they are merely two sides of the same coin. It is noteable that Kid is apparently two years younger than Harle. In the end, the coincidence may be just that — or a device used to further emphasize the opposition between the game's two "teams," Serge-Kid and Lynx-Harle.

Kid uses this death blow machine invented by Lucca. In Kid's memory, Serge must go to the machinery in Lucca's orphanage and enter the password — L1, △, R1, △, X (which roughly spells Lucca's mothers name: Lara) — to obtain this Tech Skill. (This password also has an important role in the plot of Chrono Trigger.)
