Stuart may be:.
- a surname
- a male first name meaning Servant.
- An alternative spelling is Stewart. The current French spelling "Stuart" was introduced by Mary I of Scotland (Mary, Queen of Scots), who lived in France after her marriage to the Dauphin.
Etymology
It originates from the House of Stuart, a ruling family of Scotland and England. However, what is less well known is that the name comes from Old English, stigeweard meaning "guard/warden of the [pig] sty". The title came about in Anglo-Saxon times, when a chieftain would appoint someone to look after a sacrificial pig.
The name eventually came to mean "one who watches over something", and thus was applied to Scotland where the High Steward watched over the realm. The descendants of those original Scottish stewards were the House of Stuart.
