William P. Plaschke has been a writer for the Los Angeles Times since 1987. He was born in Louisville, Kentucky. He attended Louisville's Ballard High School. He received a bachelor's degree in mass communications in 1980 from Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in Edwardsville, Illinois.

In the relay of the Olympic torch for the 2002 Winter Olympics, Plaschke carried the torch in downtown Los Angeles. Currently he is one of the panelists on the sports-themed show Around the Horn on ESPN. He is a member of the Baseball Writers Association of America and the Professional Football Writers Association.

In his career as a sportswriter, Plaschke has been named National Sports Columnist of the Year by the Associated Press. He has been nominated for a Pulitzer Prize. He had a small part as a sportswriter in the movie Ali.
