Acronym

Usually used as an abbreviation for a longer descriptive phrase, an acronym is a word coined by combining the initial letters of that phrase.

Examples of acronyms are:

  • NATO - from North Atlantic Treaty Organisation
  • laser - from Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation

As the second example shows, letters are occasionally added or omitted to make the acronym more pronounceable.
