Thanks!

Thanks for your kind comments on my first ever contribution to Wikipedia, Angus Mac Kaskill!

I have a story to tell...

Once upon a time, a young lad had a ticket to see his favorite band of all time, Motorhead. He had the ticket but no way to get to the show, so he asked his older sister (who was evil and had WHAM! posters on her wall) if he could borrow her car. At first she said no, but after days and days of pleading she relented. The night of the show comes and the kid drove his sisters car into the big city to see the greatest rock band ever, MOTORHEAD. At the show he managed to get right up to the edge of the stage, right into the crushing, sweaty belly of the beast. At one point he took off his leather jacket (emblazoned with Motorhead logos and Led Zepplin "Zo-So"'s) and put it on the lip of the stage because he was so hot and sweaty, but he didn't want to move an inch from his prime vantage point. Turning his head for a mere second, he noticed his prize jacket was GONE! And in the pocket, also now gone were the keys to his sisters car. Deciding there wasn't much to do about it, he continued having a rockin' good time. After the show, he bummed a quarter off someone and made the call to his sister, to tell her what happened. Needless to say she was not happy with having to come all the way into the city to retrieve her car, and yelled at the lad. Now dejected our hero hung around at the venue waiting for his sister, and her wrath, when suddenly, who should appear? Lo, it was LEMMY, God of Bass Players! LEMMY spoke, thusly, "Hey kid. Whats wrong?" The lad poured out his tale of woe, all the time righteously stoked that his hero had actually stopped to speak to him. At the end of his story, LEMMY reached into his own leather jacket and pulled from his pocket, a chicken salad sandwich, saying "Wow. That's a bummer! Well here you go, it's only rock n' roll kid!" And like That he was gone! The lad looked at the sandwich, wondering how long it had been in the mysterious pocket of LEMMY, and decided it was too precious a thing to eat. And he didn't even care when his sister yelled at him later. The End. Hamster Sandwich 07:21, 25 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Motörhead singles

Wow! Congrats on your hard work! - Roda, 18:19, 25 July 2005 (UTC)

A Munkyish Response

Mmm, good spot... Thanks. As you probably noticed, I haven't spent much time on my page (yet), and my links suffered as a result... What I have there now is the english equivalent of an hourglass on a spring. The Cthulu thing was right though, i hate ending up halfway down a page!

Also, Long Live the Floyd...

7Munkys 11:24, 29 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for taking an interest! See I was trying to learn how to do reverts but for some reason my profile (7 sections) kept saving about one properly and mixing up two others. I have no idea why. But it seems to be ok now... By the way about the album/song pages- is that just meant as a template or is there a full-scale project going in order to build a more comprehensive database of musical fun? 7Munkys 07:46, 5 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Not a problem! It sounds like you're dealing with a 'My Way Or The High Way' kind of person- if they don't get what they want then nobody else gets their way either! I know a lot of people like that... Incidentally should I be replying to your messages here or on my own talk page? Both methods have shortcomings...7Munkys 10:34, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly does - I tend to use both when the talk gets difficult to keep track of or i think it makes better sense for anyone reading just the one page.Alf 10:49, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Motorhead live singles

It looks like the vote is leaning towards being kept in the VfD anyway (or at least dismissed as "no consensus"); I'll change my vote from "redirect" to "merge". I do not want to see your good work wiped out, but a single article can effectively and concisely cover all information about the different versions of the same songs. Cheers! -- BDAbramson talk 15:07, August 13, 2005 (UTC)

Motorhead singles

I voted to keep your single but I noticed that you put both albums and singles in bold italics. That is confusing, at least to me. According to the Manual of Style, names of albums are in italics and names of songs are in "double quotes". I am no expert, but it would seem to me that a single release is a song, not an album. I have not researched that question, I am just offering it as an observation.

I honestly have no idea what the convention is, Blur has "title" and that looks cumbersome. Change as you see fit. Thanks very much for the vote. Alf 17:50, 13 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I took the liberty of also changing the format on your listing of the singles on the Motorhead article itself. -- DS1953 18:58, August 13, 2005 (UTC)
I've done all the singles with "title" format as per project page advice. Yup you just beat me to the save on the motorhead page, many thanks for that. Alf 19:10, 13 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
I noticed that in the fourth paragraph under history, you refer to top 40 singles, but the link in that sentence for Iron Fist is to the album, not the single. Is that intentional? Also, the reference to the EP in that same sentence doesn't seem to fit the first half of the sentence referring to singles. DS1953 16:31, August 15, 2005 (UTC)
On the main Motorhead page? I don't think I did that bit myself, I'll have a look and see what needs. Alf 18:26, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the reference was there before the singles were written, missed it when the other links were done. Thanks for spotting that, better now. Alf 18:34, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Hmm don't know about the EP reference, I'll look to replace it with another decent single (or two). Alf 18:40, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Porterhouse Blue

Thanks for the comment and update to Porterhouse Blue, Alf. I'll take another look soon. -- Chris Wood 18:27, 14 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

song lyrics

You're welcome. And remember when asking permission for use of song lyrics to mention that the lyrics would have to be licensed under GFDL since all content must be under a free license in order to be used. Permission for use on wikipedia is not enough. Thanks Matt 03:06, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Deletion Vote

I'm with you on this one - there is no reason why individual releases by a notable band should not have seperate pages. Am I to understand that this is part of an edit war of some kind? 7Munkys 09:33, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Unintentional edit war, if at all. Some chappie decided to blank out and redirect two live singles without taking care and merging them properly, no note, nothing, I promptly reveted them to before the redirects. He obviously thought this was unacceptable as he then put both up for VfD. I just left a message on talk page saying that I felt that was a bit knee jerky. Alf 10:23, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Concensus?

Hi! I just read your comment at the two Motorhead pages on VfD. I don't really see the concensus as favouring the elimination of these articles as separate entities. In fact I think your hard work on those articles will be rewarded. I hope so anyway. They deserve to be stand alone articles just on the content. I do see the nominators point that cover versions arn't notable in themselves, but a live version of a song puts it ahead of a mere "cover". As you know, studio versions may be cleaner and more nuanced from an audiophile perspective, but live versions often serve to "kick out the jams" a little harder. Particularly with Motorhead. Good luck! Hamster Sandwich 23:09, 15 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

OGG files

Hi - to get the OGG files for the Iron Maiden article, I got the original CD album, recorded it to MP3 on my PC, then used Cool Edit to cut the tracks to the correct length, and also to save them as OGG files. Cool Edit needs a plugin to save files in OGG format, but its free and all over the net. Need any more info, give us a shout --PopUpPirate 10:37, August 19, 2005 (UTC)

Re: Grope Lane

You may use any of the photos that are on the Shuts of Shrewsbury pages on the Shrewsbury Forum site, as the photos (and shut articles) were done by me (I am "Proud Salopian").

As I don't have broadband it will take a lot of time for me to upload these files again onto Wiki, but you're free to save the photos of Grope Lane, and any of the other shuts, and then upload them onto Wiki.

The photos are mine and are free to be used by anyone so long as it's not for profitable purposes. You can also use any information from the articles written by me (ie Proud Salopian) as it's all common knowledge anyway - I get my information from various sources, etc. But the photos are mine and on Wiki can be used freely. Image Tagging Image:Oriel Arms.gif

Thanks for uploading Image:Oriel Arms.gif. I notice it currently doesn't have an image copyright tag, so its copyright status is therefore unclear. Please add a tag to let us know its copyright status. (If you created/took the picture then you can use {{gfdl}} to release it under the GFDL. If you can claim fair use use {{fairuse}}.) If you don't know what any of this means, just let me know on the image description page where you got the images and I'll tag them for you. Otherwise, see Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use. Thanks so much. --Secretlondon 19:49, 23 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Tie - I'll mark for deletion, I had forgotten I'd bothered with it, I didn't use it, it links nowhere, and it's...boring. In the end I preferred a written description. Arms - I think I've got the tag right on that now, if you'd care to review. Thanks. Alf 20:13, 23 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Transwiki

Wikipedia:Votes for deletion/The Sticks — In theory, I (or anyone else) could have. We can transwiki between any two GFDL wikis. In practice, it's not worth setting up the necessary infrastructure on the destination wiki in this case. Uncle G 21:18:42, 2005-08-24 (UTC)

  • I have added a Keep vote and a comment on the VfD. If you could take a moment and decide whether or not you think it's enough to change your vote I'd appreciate it. Wikibofh 23:53, August 25, 2005 (UTC)
Hi, that's good info to cite and yes it does change my mind, but it will need to be included in the article, are you happy to do this yourself? (I've done enough 'from the jaws of death' jobs today). Alf 00:01, 26 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Julius Caesar

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lucius_Julius_Caesar Reading from Gaius Julius Caesar II it shows that he was father to Gaius Julius Caesar III who then in turn was father to Julius Caesar who's full name was Gaius Julius Caesar, surely that would make Julius Caesar(Dictator) Gaius Julius Caesar IV?

I've read over the articles, and note that in Lucius Julius Caesar you mention he's referred to as "Julius Caesar the dictator". I quite agree that the lineage makes him Gaius Julius Caesar IV, but if it were that in the context it might not point that 'this one's Julius Caesar'. It could read "Julius Caesar the dictator (Gaius Julius Caesar IV)", but might lose clarity of line. I do note, however, that the article on Julius Caesar itself doesn't seem to pick up it either, I suggest you either Be bold or discuss it on the relevant talk pages if you feel unsure about making an edit. motorhead templates, categories

Hi - I appreciate your request for my opinion, which I will freely offer but you should certainly feel free to ignore as well. My general approach around here is to survey how similar things look and try to not make anything look jarringly different. Beyond that I have a very strong minimalist tendency. Checking out some of the bands I've heard of in Category:British heavy metal musical groups, I see Led Zeppelin and Iron Maiden (band) have similar templates (and many don't). The minimalist in me objects to lots of colors, so between these (and your samples) I prefer the Led Zeppelin one. Motorhead has enough work, that I don't think I'd provide a full discography in the template. Again, strongly leaning minimalist, I'd probably end up with something like:

Motörhead
Lemmy Kilmister | Phil Campbell | Mikkey Dee: Albums - EPs - Singles - DVDs

Re categories, I'm not sure what the question is. Songs perhaps? Again, matching other structures seems reasonable to me, so category:Motorhead songs, subcat of category:motorhead (see category:Led Zeppelin), is probably the way to go. -- Rick Block (talk) 14:08, August 31, 2005 (UTC)

Now that is very nice of you Rick, I reckon you're right, I was concerned by their bulky appearance, your suggestion is good. As for doing categories, it's simply that I've never created one before and am aware it should relate to bigger categories, haven't a clue where to start, I'll read the page on categories over again, maybe it's just simpler than it looks. Alf 14:16, 31 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Categories are pretty easy. The basics are: 1) add a category reference in the article, 2) either from preview or after saving the article, click on the red category link (which opens up a page for the category description), 3) add a brief description of the category (optional) and at least one category link to make the new category a subcategory of some other categories, 4) continue until you're linked into some existing catgory. Many categories end up in multiple "parent" categories. -- Rick Block (talk) 17:40, August 31, 2005 (UTC)

My opinion only, if you and the other editor working on it agree on a better introduction line, (I'm a bit confused by it, I must admit), take the tag off and note it on the talk page when you are both happy with it. High Icelandic

hi there ... thx for welcoming me

well i have already a little problem ... i posted an article (selfmade) about High Icelandic but it needed to be cleaned up and wikify, so i did but it isnt good enough yet ... can u look at it and tell me what needs to be corrected ???

thx Helheim 23:24, 1 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

High Icelandic (careful with the CAPS) - article content overall is fine, it just needs 'arranging nicely' and connecting up to relevant areas better, see Wikipedia:Style and How-to Directory. As a new article it has a good outlook. Alf 23:31, 1 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
wel i posted it also on the dutch wiki version and this layout was good there ... why isnt it here good ???
Um, I can only suppose it's the famous Dutch 'laid back' approach. It's no problem, it just needs a bit more time, working on it will help you become aware of categories and such, I corrected [[Category:Language]] to [[Category:Languages]] , but that prob needs to be shifted to a more succinct one, check out the bottom of the page, and take a look in the categories and have a go! Alf 23:42, 1 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
'laid back' approach ??? i got more help in the 2 days that this article is online at the dutch wiki then here ... the person who nominated this for delete hardly speaks to me and doesnt explain his motivations in detail. the icelandic language page u showed me explains the language but all this is also used in the High Icelandic so it doesnt need to resaid there. U said the content is good, layout is good, so what does it need more to stay ??? Helheim 00:21, 2 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

btw i appriciate ur help very much, untill now ur the only friendly person i have met on the english wiki

Ah, you misunderstand, it noted for clean up, it is not listed in Wikipedia:Articles for deletion, the second tag is Wikify - format using Wiki markup (as opposed to plain text or HTML) and add internal links to material, incorporating it into the whole of Wikipedia. So do not worry about it being deleted! Alf 00:32, 2 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]
