In mathematics

6000000 is a 2000001-gonal number.

It is one of the few numbers whose English representation in words does not use the letters r, t, or u (see Sloane's A072956), nor the letters h, o, r, t, or w (Sloane's A073419).

It is symmetrical if written as floating point: 6e6.

The Holocaust during World War II

The number 6000000 has become emotive because it is well-known as the usual approximate count of the number of Jews killed by the Nazis in the Holocaust during the Second World War.

  • Lucy Davidowicz used prewar census figures to estimate that 5.85 million Jews died. Using official census counts may cause an underestimate since many births and deaths were not recorded in small towns and villages. Another reason some consider her estimate too low is that many records were destroyed during the war. (Her book, The War Against the Jews has detailed listings by country of the number of Jews killed.)
  • For the significance of this number in Israeli society see also Tom Segev's book "The Seventh Million" - a book about the after-effects of the death of about six million Jews on the remaining one million living in Israel after the Holocaust during the early years after the State of Israel was founded in 1948.

Jewish populations today

  • The Jewish population of North America (United States and Canada combined) at the present time is estimated to be at about 6000000 Jews.

(Data based on a study by Jewish People Policy Institute (JPPI). See Jewish people near zero growth by Tovah Lazaroff, Jerusalem Post, June 24, 2004.)

  • The Jewish population of Israel at the present time is approaching 6000000.

(Data based on a study by the Israel Central Bureau of Statistics. See Israel’s population is 6.8 million by Zeev Klein, Globes online September 13, 2004. Includes (about 370,000) Israeli citizens living in the West Bank and Gaza.)
