Ulysses S. Grant High School (commonly known as Grant High School), founded in 1924, is a high school in Portland, Oregon's Hollywood District. As of 2005, its principal is Toni Hunter.

Overview

Freshman classes at Grant are divided into six different communities: The G community, the R community, the A community, the N community, the T community, and the US community. Which non-elective classes a freshman takes, excluding mathematics, is determined by which community he is placed in.

Curriculum

GHS offers many different elective and non-elective classes including but not limited to ten different mathematics courses, fourteen different science courses, two years of accounting classes, five different foreign language courses (French, Spanish, German, Japanese, and Latin), and multiple performing arts classes.

Special programs

GHS's Bridge program is specially designed for freshmen and sophomores who need special help transitioning into high school. Bridge students are heavily involved in their schoolwork, and are pressured to succeed.

English Language Learners is a program for students whose native language is not English. Students in the ELL program take science, math, and social studies classes only after passing English as a Second Language classes.

Athletics

GHS's mascot is the Grant Generals, in honour of its namesake General Ulysses S. Grant. Grant officially has baseball, basketball, softball, football, volleyball, wrestling, track, swimming, and soccer teams. A student-run bowling team also exists.

Faculty

GHS's principal is Toni Hunter. The vice principal of administration is Brian Chatard, and the vice principal of curriculum is Susan Schenk. Five different counselors work at the school, each one assigned to a certain number of students based on last name.

Miscellaneous

The 1995 movie Mr. Holland's Opus was filmed at Grant High School.
