---|---|
Headstrong is the debut album by Ashley Tisdale star from High School Musical and The Suite Life of Zack & Cody. The album features the hits "Be Good to Me" (featuring David Jassy) and He Said She Said with 2 new singles "Not Like That" and "Suddenly". The album was released on February 6, 2007 in the United States via Warner Bros Records. Tisdale promoted the album during her Headstrong Tour Across America and then promoted on the High School Musical Tour. The album debuted at #5 on the Billboard 200 with 64,000 copies sold in its first week.[1] The album, thus far, has yielded three commercial singles: "Be Good to Me", "He Said She Said" and "Suddenly". "Goin' Crazy was released as a Radio Disney single, which was a huge hit. "Headstrong" is the seventh single and "Not Like That" was released as the album's fourth single in some parts of Europe. We'll Be Together was a promo for "Headstrong" and High School Musical: The Concert.
Album information
Ashley started the recording process in early 2006 in US, at the recording studios of Los Angeles, California entirely. She worked with important producers and songwriters J. R. Rotem, Kara Dioguardi, Ryan Tedder (of OneRepublic), Evan Bogart, Bryan Todd, amongst others. She recorded cover songs by artist Tata Young (Zoom Zoom), Sandy Molling (Goin' Crazy (Originally title "Eyes on You") and Sarah Hudson (Unlove You). Tisdale was gliding to realize the album at the end of 2006 but for the recordings of her series The Suite Life of Zack & Cody and promotions of High School Musical the album was postponed for the firsts months of 2007, it was finally released February 6. Her first single was "He Said She Said" it leaked first in the High School Musical: The Concert on December 10, 2006 but for conflict because of the lyric of the song, the song was backward and "Be Good To Me" was released on December 25, 2006 acting as the first single.
On February 6, 2007 the album debuted at number 5 in the Billboard 200, Canada and number 14 in the United World Chart albums for 68,000 copies in the first week. Then the album went down in the lists for the scanty promotion on behalf of Ashley since there were rolling the second part of High School Musical called High School Musical 2. On September 17, 2007 He Said She Said was re-released, the song turned radial success and with his music video it also managed to increase the sales of the album in United States, Latin America and Europe. On November 13, 2007 she released her first DVD called There's Something About Ashley and started her first tour "Headstrong Tour Across America" to promote the disc. On January 25, 2008 Not Like That was released as her third general single and second single in Germany after He Said She Said. Also it was realised in other Europa's countries.
The album was #6 on "Album of The Year" by Billboard Readers' Choice. The Album debuted at #17 on the U.L. LP Chart and entered the top 10 at number 6, ten weeks later and peaked at #1 on October 28, 2007, beating out "High School Musical 2" and "Blackout" by Britney Spears, it has sold 1 million. [2] Although Tisdale's singles from Headstrong hited to chart in the UK, the album reached number 155 on the UK Albums Chart in December 2007, only digital downloads.
"So Much for You" along with "Suddenly" is currently being released and promoted on Brazil.
Re-releases
Ashley re-released her debut album "Headstrong" in a holiday edition, and it's so far the only special edition avaible in the US. It contains the CD with a pink cover with all the 14 tracks from original album, a DVD which contains There's Something About Ashley with the three music videos and the documentary, a fold-out poster, and a special bracelet designed by Ashley.
Ashley will re-release her debut album "Headstrong" again on June 6, 2008, only in Germany in a Deluxe Edition (CD+DVD). The CD contains all the 14 tracks from original album and the DVD contains There's Something About Ashley, with the three music videos and the documentary. Also, a pink cover (the same used for the Holiday Edition) will be used.
Critical reception
Headstrong was met with generally positive reviews, receiving a 3/5 on the website All Music Guide.[3] Headstrong's sound is much more mature than the soundtrack's teen pop-meets-musicals vibe, incorporating heavy hip-hop beats, dancehall's call-and-response, Middle Eastern elements, and other mid-2000s pop music trends into the Disney pop sound. "Positivity"'s syncopated beats and old-school synths make it one of the best examples of this approach, and one of the best songs on the album. Gwen Stefani's hip-pop is another major influence, especially on "Headstrong" itself, which mixes and matches slinky verses with cheerleadery, "Hollaback Girl" choruses. At times, Headstrong's songs reflect that Tisdale is a little older than some of her Radio Disney peers, but at other times that fact is ignored: "He Said She Said" features a hard-hitting beat and backing vocals that sound like Kidz Bop; "Not Like That" has Tisdale singing, "I'm the kind of chick that hits spots/In my flip-flops/Listenin' to hip-hop." A few straightforwardly catchy tracks make up for missteps like the mopey ballad "Unlove You" and "Suddenly", which seems to be about Tisdale discovering her own stardom. "Goin' Crazy" sounds a lot like Britney Spears's "Drive Me Crazy", and "Over It" is a pretty typical angry breakup song, but they both deliver some much-needed hooks. Headstrong isn't as winning as either High School Musical or Hannah Montana, which is a little surprising considering the high-profile songwriters and producers involved (Diane Warren, Lauren Christy, Scott Spock, Nicolas Molinder, Joacim Persson, and Guy Roche, to name a few). However, it's fine for anyone who just wants to hear more of Ashley Tisdale's -- and not Sharpay Evans' -- singing.[4]
At October 2007 Oye! Awards (Premios Oye! in Spanish) released in Mexico nominated the album in the category International Breakthrough Artist of 2007 for the debut album Headstrong
The album was #6 on "Album of The Year" by Billboard Readers' Magazine Choice.
Promotion and touring
This is the first studio album for which Tisdale did not do any promotion prior to its release with the exception performance on ABC's Good Morning America on in February 6 (She sang Be Good to Me) and October 19 (she performed He Said She Said), on February 7 on Live with Regis and Kelly (she sang Be Good To Me) and on October 22 (she performed He Said She Said and Not Like That) and the same day on TRL (she performed and co-host). The music video for He Said She Said promoted Eckō Red, for a shoe commercial. Also her song was featured in a V-Cast commercial. On October 23 she also performed He Said She Said on The Early Show. She was due to appear on Ellen on December 21[5], however the performance was postponed[6]. The song He Said She Said was used in the credits of the direct-to-video movie "Bring It On: In It to Win It". Ashley's Huckleberry Toys will be available on March 3, 2008 at Toys "R" Us. The "He Said She Said" doll brings the rock'n personal Ashley has to life. Highly detailed fashions that matches what Ashley wore. Awesome exclusive Hair Clip to wear. Exclusive Bracelet to wear. Exclusive 11" x 17" Poster. Collectible Trading Card featuring "He Said She Said" Ashley. Super Cool Sticker Sheet. Also comes accessorized with microphone, sheet music, hand bag and hairbrush. Tisdale performed Suddenly along with "Last Christmas" in the lighting of the "75th Rockefeller Christmas Tree". [7]. However, Warner Bros. Records posted the commercial for the album, which was in rotation on television and on its official YouTube page. On October 2007, Tisdale started her first tour called Headstrong Tour Across America for different malls of the United States and then promoted on the High School Musical Tour for US, Canada and Latin America.
On April 14, 2008 she promoted the song He Said She Said in the commercial for Degree Girl and in late April 2008, Not Like That was released as promotion for one episode of the abc's series Desperate Housewives Season 4.[8]
