Chervona Ruta - musical film, one of the first modern Soviet Ukrainian muscal movies, filmed in Ukrainian SSR in 1971, in Bukovina and Carpathian mountains. Chervona Ruta means "Red Rue" in translation from Ukrainian. However, the expression became a proper noun and is generally not translated. The term Chervona Ruta derives from the old East Slavic legend, according to which the girl who will find Chervona Ruta on the Ivan Kupala Day, will be happy in love.

Plot

A young Carpathian girl, Oksana, and a young miner, Boris from Donetsk, get acquained on the train "Donetsk-Verhovina". Sofia Rotaru plays the role of Oksana - teacher of the Chernivtsi Musical College. Vasili Zinkevich, soloist of the instrumental band "Smerichka" plays the role of Boris. The young travelers fall in love with each other, and the plot plays out around their relationship. In Carpathian mountains, their ways take different paths, but in spite of this Boris manages to find out where the beautiful Oksana is. The young couple in love meets again, and their friends invite them to perform in a concert for vacationers. [1] Oksana and Boris are telling all about their feelings in the songs they perform.

In 1971, Sofia Rotaru is already a known singer in Bukovina of pop-folk songs and when the footage of the first Ukrainian musical "Chervona Ruta" started in Carpathian mountains, namely Sofia got the main role. Ukrainian folklore, which expresses in nature, costumes and melodic songs complemented the rather simple scenario about a suddenly blazed up love between a simple miner Boris and Bukovinian beauty Oksana.

The already popular in the Soviet Union song Chervon Ruta was performed in the movie by Vasiliy Zinkevich, Sofia Rotaru performed "Grey-winged Bird" - Italian schlager Italian: Immensità, professionally translated in Ukrainian, "Draw Me the Night" and "Autumn Is Close", also in duet with Zinkevich - "Vodohrai".

In fact, Vasily and Sofia, who are tenor and alto were supposed to perform the song "Vodogray" together. However, it did not work out as the song did not sound well like this. Nazariy Yarelchyuk performed for Vasiliy Zinkevich, and for Sofia Rotaru - soloist of "Smerichka" Mariya Isak. Soloist Maria Isak appears fifth in the row of five girls, for a couple of seconds.

The fact that the soundtrack for the song "Vodogray" was recorded by other singers, was revealed only thirty years after. After the release of the television movie, the singers became unexpectedly famous in the USSR and in Eastern Europe. These seemingly amateur (but talented) singers became committed to professional stage. Sofia Rotaru did change, and Mariya Isak had a son born to her and eventually withdrew from the stage to raise her family.
