iCarly is an American sitcom which premiered on September 8, 2007 on Nickelodeon. The series is about a girl named Carly Shay who makes a webcast internet program with her best friends Sam and Freddie.

Synopsis

Miranda Cosgrove (who also starred as Megan Parker, alongside with Josh Peck and Drake Belland in Drake & Josh) stars as Carly Shay, a 13-year-old teenage girl who starts her own web show after going through talent show auditions for a teacher at her school, Ms. Francine Briggs (played by Mindy Sterling) and realizing that young people rarely have control over entertainment. Jennette McCurdy plays Carly's rebellious best friend and web show co-host, Sam. Carly lives in an apartment in Seattle, Washington with her 26-year-old brother Spencer Shay (played by Jerry Trainor, "Crazy Steve" on Drake & Josh), an eccentric artist. Their father is in the military. An apartment neighbor Freddie, played by Nathan Kress, is the web show's technical producer — he has a huge crush on Carly and a rivalry with Sam.

Characters

Main characters

  • Carly Shay (Miranda Cosgrove): is a 13-year-old teenage girl with her own web show. She is often a mediator between Sam and Freddie.
  • Sam Puckett (Jennette McCurdy): is Carly's best friend. She is rebellious, funny, and doesn't really like to do homework (or work at all). She bickers with Carly's neighbor and schoolmate, Freddie.
  • Freddie Benson (Nathan Kress): is one of Carly's apartment neighbors and the web show's technical producer. He has a crush on her, but Carly only thinks of him as a friend. All the computers seen on the show, including Freddie's, have a pear image on the back, most likely as a spoof on Apple's apple image on the back of their computers.
  • Spencer Shay (Jerry Trainor): is Carly's 26-year-old brother. He is known to most as an eccentric artist but his family doesn't think he's crazy. He is Carly's legal guardian, because their father is in the military.

Secondary characters

  • Ms. Francine Briggs (Mindy Sterling): is a teacher at Carly's school who she and her friends like to make jokes about. She had also taught at the school when Spencer was a student.
  • Jake Krandle (Austin Butler): is a boy who Carly likes.
  • Lewbert is the doorman that Carly and Sam pick on.
  • Gibby is a crazy kid in Carly and Sam's class that has only appeared in several episodes.
  • Zeke (Eric Nelsen): is another boy that has appeared in iDreamofDance that Carly and Sam fall in love with.
  • Hanson Puckett is Sam's little brother who doesn't appear in the first season. He is in charge of emotions of iCarly. But sometimes he tells Sam's secrets over the world when Carly, Freddie, and Sam leave the camera with him. Unlike everyone else he might have a crush on Ms. Briggs.

Minor characters

  • The mother in the lobby is played by Angelyna Martinez.
  • The woman in the lobby with her dog is played by Donna Pieroni, who also played minor roles in Drake & Josh.
  • Wesley, the rapper/beatbox kid who Carly and Sam don't like is played by Colin Spensor.

Production

iCarly was originally ordered by the Nickelodeon network for 13 episodes in its first season. But before the series ever premiered, the network increased the order to 20 episodes, and then 40 episodes (an extremely large order for a new television series). Miranda Cosgrove, with Drake Bell on backup, sings the series' theme song, called "Leave it All to Me."

A majority of the focus group on the show gave the show an A or A plus, while Dan Schneider was writing more episodes, during February and March 2007.

As of August 2007 about half of the episodes of iCarly have been produced.

Buzz about the show has been in many national newspapers, such as The New York Times and USA Today.

The show was first nationally promoted by its star, Miranda Cosgrove, on NBC's Today Show on August 2, 2007.

iCarly is unique from previous Nickelodeon shows in that it asks its audience to send in their own personal video clips, which are then incorporated into episodes of the series. Users are considered guest stars.

Promos of the series started airing on March 31, 2007 during the 2007 Kids' Choice Awards. iCarly was created by Dan Schneider, who also serves as the show's executive producer. A promotional preview of the show aired on August 4, 2007 on Nickelodeon.

Before the show began, a Drake & Josh marathon was shown with a Hours:Minutes:Seconds counter on the bottom right of the episode. It had a white "i" and "Carly" in light green, the counter text was black on a white background.

There were two websites mentioned in iCarly. iCarly.com is a real website, while splashface.com (a parody of YouTube) basically redirects to iCarly.com.

In the intro, when the iCarly link is being typed, where the bookmarked pages are, you can see that one of the websites is ToonJuice, referring to the Teenick show, Zoey 101.
