The FIFA Women's World Cup 2007 will be held in China from September 10-September 30 2007.[1] Originally, China was to host the 2003 Women's World Cup, but the outbreak of SARS in that country forced that event to be moved to the United States. FIFA immediately granted the 2007 event to China, which means that no new host nation will be chosen competitively until voting is held for the 2011 Women's World Cup. The 2007 Championship is seen as a prelude to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, for which China is preparing at an accelerated pace with a high budget and much fanfare.

The tournament opened with a record-breaking match in Shanghai; holders Germany beat Argentina 11-0 to register the biggest win and the highest scoring match in Women's World Cup history.

Qualification

See main article: FIFA Women's World Cup 2007 qualification

16 nations will participate in the Women's World Cup finals. As the host, China will automatically qualify, having saved its automatic entry in 2003. The remaining fifteen berths were divided as follows, with at least one going to each of the six FIFA confederations: five to Europe, 2.5 to Asia (plus hosts China), two to Africa, two to South America, 2.5 to North America, Central America and the Caribbean and one to Oceania. The half spot indicates that the 16th qualifier was determined through a play-off between the third placed teams from Asia (Japan) and CONCACAF (Mexico), with the Japanese team coming out victorious.

Monetary rewards

For the first time in FIFA Women's World Cup history, all teams will get monetary bonuses according to the round they reach (all in USD): [3]

  • Champions: 1,000,000
  • Runners-up: 800,000
  • Third place: 650,000
  • Fourth place: 550,000
  • Quarter-finalists: 300,000
  • First round exit: 200,000

Other rewards

UEFA is using the FIFA Women's World Cup as its qualifying tournament for the 2008 Olympic women's tournament. The best three performing UEFA teams will qualify for the Olympics. If England places in the top three, it will compete in Beijing as "Great Britain". While FIFA recognizes the four Home Nations of the United Kingdom as separate sporting entities, the International Olympic Committee recognizes the UK as a single entity under the name "Great Britain".

Draw

The group draw took place on 22 April 2007 in Wuhan after the completion of the qualifying rounds. FIFA automatically seeds the host and defending champions, slotting (China) and (Germany) into Group D and Group A, respectively. [3]

The FIFA Women's World Ranking for March 2007 will determine the other two positions, B1 and C1.[4] Of those teams not already seeded, United States and Norway are the highest-ranked teams and will thus be seeded.

Also, no two teams from the same confederation can draw each other, except for those from UEFA, where a maximum of two teams from UEFA may be drawn into the same group.

These restrictions helped make Group B arguably the most brutal group of death in women's football history. Three of the top five teams in the June 2007 FIFA Women's World Rankings, the last to be released before the tournament, are in this group—the USA (1), Sweden (3) and Korea DPR (5).
