Yumi Fukuzawa

Yumi Fukuzawa (福沢 祐巳 Fukuzawa Yumi) is the main character of Japanese light novel, manga and anime series Maria-sama Ga Miteru created by Oyuki Konno. She is Sachiko Ogasawara's pettie soeur. She is voiced by Kana Ueda in the anime.

First Season

Yumi is an ordinary Lilian school girl, she is bashful beyond words, very timing and unsure of herself. She first met Sachiko Ogasawara when she prayed in front of Maria statue and had her tie fixed by Sachiko. Yumi’s friend, Tsutako Takeshima, took picture of this and wanted to display in the school fete. Tsutako got Yumi to ask permission from Sachiko.

In the Rose Mansion, Sachiko was arguing with the Roses. They say that she couldnot object their plan, as she did not have a pettie soeur. Sachiko ran out of the meeting and knocked Yumi over. She then asked if Yumi had a grande soeur, and promptly offered Yumi her rosary. Sachiko thought that if she had a petite soeur, the Yamayurikai could not force her to play Cinderella alongside a male. Yumi refused Sachiko's rosary, as she would be accepting it for the wrong reasons. Then Sei Satou offered a bet to Sachiko - if she could convince Yumi to be her petite soeur, the role of Cinderella will go to Yumi. If she could not, she must play Cinderella. Sachiko told Yumi that she, Sachiko will definitely become Yumi's soeur.

When the play Cinderella came, Yumi and the Yamayurikai found that the male who played the prince, Suguru, is Sachiko’s cousin and fiance. Sachiko accused him of going too far and ran away. Yumi followed her to the greenhouse. Yumi thought that she could not do anything for Sachiko, but Sachiko cried on her shoulder. Yumi offered to take the rosary, but Sachiko refused. Sachiko told Yumi about the arranged marriage, and that he did not love her, but she loved him. Sachiko calmed down, and danced with Yumi. After the play, there was a bonfire. Yumi thought sadly that she would not have an excuse to have anything more to do with Sachiko then suddenly Sachiko appeared and offered Yumi her rosary, Yumi accepted.

Second Season

On New’s Year Day, Sei picked up Yumi to Sachiko’s house, the Yamayurikai had a party there and Yumi also met Sachiko’s mother.

When the third years were about to graduated, Yumi asked Sei if she had anything to ask Yumi, like taking care of Goronta, or looking after Shimako. Sei said Yumi is the type of girl who will help even if not asked, so she was not worried about Shimako. Sei instead asked for a kiss on the mouth as a parting gift. Yumi tried to run away, but Sei hugged her. Sei thanked Yumi for helping her pass her examinations, since Yumi gave Sei a reason to live again. She also said that Yumi tried to run away so that it wouldn't be Sei who was leaving her, but the other way round. Yumi realized that this is true. Yumi found out from Shimako, however, that Sei would actually be going to the Lillian's Girls' University, which is just next door. She was angry at Sei for not telling her, but is happy because Sei won't be leaving her after all.

After the third years graduated, spring came, the situation is made even worse with the arrival of Touko. Yumi feeled jealous of Touko's closeness with Sachiko, but did not say anything about it. Yumi and Sachiko's relationship went on a rocky situation; then, her favorite umbrella had gone missing. Then, Yumi went back into her feet with different people helping her out. In addition, her missing umbrella was returned to her.

Later, Youko arrived and told Yumi about everything. Sachiko's grandmother was dying and she did not want to tell Yumi because she did not want her to worry. At the day of the funeral, Sachiko apologized and asked for Yumi's forgiveness. Yumi said that she would forgot about everything happened in the last few weeks and loved her onee-sama very much.

Maria-sama Ga Miteru OVAs

At the beginning of the OVAs, Sachiko invited Yumi to her summer home for vacations. Sachiko's acquaintances made trouble for them. They then invited Yumi and Sachiko to a party which later found out that was Sachiko's great grandmother 80th birthday party. The acquaintances then asked Yumi to play a musical instrument. Yumi said that she was no good at those, and sang the Maria-sama's heart. Then Sachiko accompanied her with a piano performance. After that, Sachiko's grandmother congratulated Yumi because the song brought back memories. She called Yumi was a cute angel, and asked her to visit next year.

Then Lilian and Hanadera collaborate on a school festival. Yumi tried to fix Sachiko's hatred for men.

Relationships

• Sachiko Ogasawara is Yumi's grande soeur. She loves Sachiko very much and always tries her best to make Sachiko happy. For example, on their fistr date, Yumi took Sachiko to a lot of places she did not know. Yumi often asked Sachiko to go on another date, and invited her to meet Yumi's parents. Sachiko has tried to be like other people, so she also change her skirt into jean like those of Yumi. She sometimes asked Yumi to go out to know more about herself which Yumi said that is their future.

• Sei Satou, Yumi's friend, Sei often hugs her when she is not paying attention, which usually makes Sachiko angry. Sei said she likes to do that because she thinks Yumi is cute. Yumi kissed her cheek the day before her graduation. After her graduation, Sei still keeps in touch with Yumi and often helps her when she is depressed.

• Yoshino Shimazu is Yumi's best friend. Yoshino met Yumi in the Rose Mansion, but after that they don't usually see each other because of Yoshino's surgery. Yumi went to visit her which made Rei tried to ask Yumi where Yoshino is. Yoshino, along with Shimako, are Yumi's classmates in their Second Year. Yoshino is the type of person eager to spread her wings, and sometimes "forced" Yumi to her idea, like the time a novel written by Sei Suga, which made they thought that Sei Satou wrote it, Yoshino "forced" Yumi to find who was the real author.

• Shimako Toudou, Yumi's friend and Sei's petite sœur. Yumi usually asked Shimako for helps when in need. In the second season, Yumi asked Shimako not to leave Lilian before her graduate.

• Touko Matsudaira, a first year student who apparent later on in the year that she may become Yumi's petite sœur. Touko is a distant relative of Sachiko, she began to near Sachiko when Sachiko's grandmother was about to die, which made Yumi sad. She hated Yumi's innocence, and sometimes argued with Yumi about Sachiko or other things.

• Kanako Hosokawa is a fisrt year student who admires Yumi and detests Touko. She is the classmate of Noriko and Touko. Kanako asked Yumi not to come to Hanadera's festival because she thought somethings was going to happen to Yumi. Rumors said that she will become Yumi's petite sœur, but she thought she would be a bother for Yumi.

• Yuuki Fukuzawa is Yumi's younger twin brother. He loves her very much and tries to help her in everything he can. Yuuki is the only boy who does not hated by Sachiko.

Trivia

• Yumi often got hugged by Sei, who thinks her to be very cute, which sometimes made Sachiko angry because of jealousy.

• Other characters often comment on how her emotions 'show on her face'.

• It is unclear that who will become Yumi's petite sœur between Touko Matsudaira and Kanako Hosokawa.
