The Best Years, the 13-part one-hour drama created by Aaron Martin (Degrassi: The Next Generation), follows orphaned and full-ride scholar, Samantha Best (Charity Shea) as she embarks upon her freshman year at the prestigious Charles University in Boston, Massachusetts. Samantha, having been shuffled through the foster care system her entire life, is finally looking forward to a future of new opportunities and friendships. However, as she struggles to find her own identity, Samantha is faced with mounting pressure as she discovers the ins and outs of life on campus.
Along the way Samantha meets her new roommate Kathryn Klarner, (Jennifer Miller) a wealthy socialite from one of the most prominent families in the mid-west; Devon Syler, (Brandon Jay McLaren) a fellow scholarship recipient and star basketball player who has caught her eye; Dawn Vargas (Athena Karkanis) a child actor who trades in Hollywood for university; Trent Hamiltion (Niall Matter) a part-time student and full-time head bartender at Boston's hot spot, Colony; and Noah Jensen (Randal Edwards) Devon's room-mate, a business major with a future planned in Hollywood. With a part-time job at Colony, Samantha finds herself struggling with a lot more than just academics. With her new-found friends, her employer, Lee Campbell (Alan Van Sprang) and the benefactress of her scholarship, Dorothy Sullivan (Sherry Miller), Samantha has found her new, occasionally dysfunctional, family.
The Best Years explores the life of Samantha Best and her fellow students setting up their futures at college, only to discover that the future is now. Every decision they make -- good or bad -- will affect the rest of their lives. The opportunity to reinvent themselves and become who they really want to be is within reach, but one wrong step can lead to disaster. They face the fun of living free from adults, and on top of that, the complications of being around their peers 24/7 at the Charles U dorms where they only have themselves to answer to.
