Heiner Backhaus was born in Witten, Germany, on February 2, 1982. He is plays football as a midfielder, currently for the Maltese club from the capital city, Valletta FC.

He made his professional debut with Hannover 96 on August 12 2001, against SpVgg Unterhacing, on the 61st minute replacing Nebojša Krupniković.

He has played for Rot-Weiss Essen, 1.FC Union Berlin, Borussia Mönchengladbach, DSC Arminia Bielefeld and Kickers Offenbachin Germany, and AEK Larnaca in Cyprus. He will be playing for Valletta FC as from summer 2007.
