Template:Big Brother housemates Big Brother 2007 is the current eighth series of the United Kingdom reality television programme Big Brother, screened on Channel 4. It began on 30 May 2007 at 9 p.m.[1]

The first round of auditions started on 6 January 2007[2] at the SECC in Glasgow where there was a queue of only three hundred people.[3] Auditions were also held in Birmingham, Cardiff, Dublin, London, Manchester, and Newcastle.[4]

On 8 March 2007, it was announced that The Carphone Warehouse would not return to sponsor Big Brother 2007 after cancelling its sponsorship of Celebrity Big Brother 2007,[5] and on 21 March, that Virgin Media would sponsor the show, for a reported GB£3 million.[6]

Broadcasts

On 4 April 2007, it was announced that Russell Brand had quit the spin off show Big Brother's Big Mouth.[7] It was reported in Heat that there will be a new guest host each week on Big Brother's Big Mouth, starting with Chris Moyles who will present the first 3 editions from launch night.[8]

Dermot O'Leary will be returning again to present Big Brother's Little Brother and Davina McCall will be back to present the live eviction shows.[9] Big Brother's Big Brain will not be returning for the series.[10]

On 18 May it was rumoured that host Davina McCall was getting her own spin-off show named Big Brother On The Couch, and that the Saturday edition of Big Brother had been axed due to low ratings.[11] It has now been announced the Big Brother On The Couch will air as an hour-long show on Sundays.[12]

Despite rumours printed in The Daily Mail, McCall confirmed on The New Paul O'Grady Show on 22 May that she will not be leaving Big Brother after the eighth series. This was also later confirmed on Chris Moyles's Radio 1 Show on 29 May.[13][14]

House

After previous speculation that Big Brother 2007 would be broadcast from a new location in Hammersmith, it was confirmed that the series would still be broadcast from Elstree. However, it will be the last series to be so, with a new house being built in Hammersmith for 2008.[15]

An aerial picture of the Big Brother house appeared in The Daily Star on 29 April 2007.[16] The aerial photos show that the old garden seems to have been transformed into additional rooms, while it is replaced by a new, smaller garden. Although the Big Brother team have covered the house and garden with a camouflage screen, extra rooms can be seen, and the roof has yet to be built.

Due to a new legislation, a smoking ban will be in effect in all public places during the series. Health officials have declared the House as a workplace, meaning housemates will not be allowed to smoke inside the house. They will still be able to smoke outside however.[15]

The Sunday Mirror has reported that there will be a Romany caravan as a punishment room for the series as well as secret rooms or gardens, accessible from the main garden via a secret button. The first housemate to discover it will be spun 180-degrees into the secret area. Other hidden rooms and oppressive decor are also being planned to increase tension. The Sunday Mirror also reported this year's theme to be 'Heaven and Hell'.[17]

Pictures of the house during construction were released in The Daily Mirror, having been taken by construction workers. They show a small garden with a pool connecting both the garden and lounge. More pictures were taken on 15 May and are now being shown.[18] On 20 May, the Daily Star Sunday published an article with, what they claimed to be, pictures of the complete house and a plan, showing many secret rooms, as well as a bathtub in the living room and an oven in the bedroom. In the same article, it was also rumoured that Richard Branson has been invited to appear as a guest star, as a thank you from producers for sponsoring the show.[19] Official pictures of the house have since been released.[20]

Housemates

The first two housemates to enter the house in 2007 were the slaggy identical twins, Sam and Amanda. The third housemate to enter was Lesley, a 60-year-old retired head-hunter who used to be a stand-up comedian, and claims to be an acquaintance of Prince Charles and Camilla. Next was Charley, a 21 year old 'it girl' from London who is an ex-lapdancer who is related to Manchester United footballer Kieran Richardson (Charley's entry was speculated by the British tabloid press [21]). The next housemate was hippy-esque 36-year old cleaner Tracey, her favourite cheese is dairylea. The sixth housemate is Chanelle, 19, from Wakefield, West Yorkshire who thinks she looks like Victoria Beckham and her favourite cheese is mozzarella. The seventh housmate was called Shabnam, she describes herself as crazy and loves clashing make up. The eigth housemate is Emily, a 19 year old drama student who is told she looks like Peaches Geldof, she is an "indie rock and roll queen" and claims that Indie is a new music genre and has probably never heard of Joy Division, her favourite cheese is french brie, and she rates herself "10 out of 10 for intelligence". The ninth housemate is Laura, a 23 year old Nanny from Wales, a dead ringer for Beth Ditto, continuing the indie theme of the show. She sweeps leaves for free at her local graveyard, she likes to steal warm beer from tables and always carries an elastic band. she wants to train as an embalmer. her friends think she looks like Peter Kay. her favourite cheese is stilton. The tenth housemate is nicky, 27, a bank worker, born in Bombay and adopted at the age of one from Mother Teresa's orphanage. her link to the indie scene is that her half-brother is in skins, a tv show popular among young british indie types, her party trick is doing a rendition of the Cheeky Girls. If she could "shag" one celebrity it would be the classy celebrity, Calum Best, her favourite cheese is parmesan. Eleventh in is 53 year old Carole, a bisexual former sexual health worker from east london, a political activist and demonstrator, she likes to swear a lot and she has a giant african land snail as a pet (she does not have a favourite cheese).

True to the rumours, a solitary male will enter the house on Friday night. There are rumours that this male will be a convicted sex offender and he will be roaming around when the lights go off. He will not, however, touch the fat minger.

The iconic Big Brother eye has been redesigned to what has been described as a "centrifugal inter-locking RGB rainbow test card"[22] by its designer Daniel Eatock.[23] He has also confirmed that this year's logo "has a very special meaning that will be revealed come launch night".[24] The logo's rainbow colours, which have long been adopted by the LGBT community, may be representative of the as-yet unconfirmed rumour that "at least half" of the housemates to enter are homosexual or bisexual.[25]
