Random Tidbits
Computers
Linux
- I have a 16-node Beowulf cluster in my basement, running Linux. The master node is a PowerEdge 4300 with dual Pentium III 450 MHz CPUs, and the total computing power of the cluster is about 1.4 gigaflops (1.4 billion floating point operations per second).
- I keep Microsoft Windows only for the very very occasional game; otherwise, I'm a full-time Linux user.
- I have used Mandrake Linux, Red Hat Linux, Debian GNU/Linux, Scyld Beowulf Linux, Fedora Linux, Knoppix Linux, Slackware Linux, and Gentoo Linux. My favorites are Scyld, Slackware, and Gentoo.
- I own a Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 Linux PDA.
- I have done over 100 kernel compiles.
- I am vehemently against calling Linux "GNU/Linux". While I agree that Linux would never have made it to where it is today if it wasn't for Richard Stallman's contributions and the GNU project, I think it's stupid to name it GNU/Linux. To me, that's Richard Stallman's way of whining that Linus Torvald beat him to making a successful open-source kernel. Sorry, Rich, but GNU/HURD just didn't get off the ground.
- I have put Linux on my Texas Instruments TI-89 graphing calculator. Yes, I'm sick.
Jobs
- I work for a small business called DataLink, Inc.. It's a little small-time computer shop in Smithfield, Rhode Island.
Hardware
- I have sucessfully destroyed:
- 2 Monitors by fire
- 1 Motherboard by shortcircuiting
- 2 Hard-drives by overuse (or they were just crap)
- 1 CPU by pin bending
- 1 Printer by old age
- 4 Mice
- 1 Microphone
- 1 Set of speakers
- 1 Heatsink (don't ask.)
- 2 CD-ROMs
- At least 5 Floppy Drives
- At least 20 Floppy Disks
- I built my computer myself. BFD.
- I regularly attend the MIT Flea Market held by the MIT Ham Radio Club. It's every third Sunday of every month from April to October.
- I refuse to give up my old 486.
Civil Air Patrol
Random Info
- I'm a C/SrA (Cadet Senior Airman)
- I have been on a whopping one emergency services mission to find an ELT.
- I belong to the 102nd Composite Squadron, which is the best damn squadron in Rhode Island.
- I am training to become a pilot through the Civil Air Patrol.
- I have no logged hours as of yet, but I have stick time on two aircraft: N9824L and N908CP (both Cessna 172 Skyhawks)
- Apart for CAP, my first flight in a small aircraft was a doozy: I flew in a Beechcraft A36 Bonanza.
- I have no logged hours as of yet, but I have stick time on two aircraft: N9824L and N908CP (both Cessna 172 Skyhawks)
- I am an extremely active editor of the Civil Air Patrol article.
- I was for a time part of the Color Guard.
- I was the squadron's Cadet of the Quarter.
Other Random Stuff
Amateur Radio
- My callsign is KB1LYZ.
- I own a Vertex VX-150 radio.
- I b0rked that radio and I sent it in for repair. I'm still waiting (after more than two months) for it to come back. I'm getting annoyed.
- I like to hang around on the 2-meter range on the 146.76 repeater in Rhode Island.
School
- I am currently enrolled in the following classes:
- AP US History
- Health
- Physical Education
- English
- AP Physics

- Most people give me weird looks and say "huh?" when they hear that. I've gotten used to it.
- I have been part of the Senior All-State Band of Rhode Island for two years.
- I have earned 3 medals for solo performances.
- I started out on trumpet but that didn't go well. I moved to euphonium and that went superb. Although my skills are weak, I am able to play the trombone. I toyed around with the French horn before dropping it.
- I suck at singing.
- As in I can crack diamonds with my voice.
Other stuff
