Garnisonen i Porsanger, based at Porsangmoen, is the world's northernmost military garrison. It trains and houses the ranger battalion of the Norwegian 6. divisjon, and formerly a part of the Finnmark regiment, together with Garnisonen i Sør-Vardanger and Alta Bataljon. Jegerbataljonen (Ranger`s battalion, approximate strength about 100 conscripts, enlisted and officers) is based here, as well as a petty officer`s training centre for the Home Guard. The camp is located immidiately adjacent to Halkavarre, one of the largest military training areas in Norway.

The role of the garrison and the battalion it houses has changed somewhat over the years. From a post-war regular infantry battalion, a new concept was introduced in the mid 90s, and a unit capable of inflitrating deep behind enemy lines and attacking key personell and material was born.
