Coleby (population approx. 600) is a small rural hamlet in Lincolnshire approximately 10km south of Lincoln, England.

Geography

This attractive stone village enjoys a dramatic setting high on the Lincoln Cliff escarpment with commanding views over the valley of the River Witham.

History

The village is a documented settlement in the Domesday Book of 1086.

During the Second World War, the RAF opened a strip and called it Coleby Grange. It housed the following squadrons:

  • 1940 - 253 Squdron Hurricanes and 264 Squadron Defiants.
  • May 1940 -
    • 12 Group Fighter Command
    • 402 Sqn
  • 1941 -
    • 409 Sqn RCAF
  • 1943 -
    • 410 Sqn RCAF
    • 307 (Polish) Sqn
  • 1959 - 142 Sqn Thor ICBM unit.

The station was closed in 1963. The Control Tower was still standing in 1988.

Other information

Coleby has an excellent village pub, The Bell, situated close to the old village centre.
