Dragon Quest Monsters (ドラゴンクエストモンスターズ, Doragon Kuesuto Monsutāzu) or Dragon Warrior Monsters as its known in North America is a spin off series of the Dragon Quest games. Made by the Enix Corporation (now known as Square Enix), it sets the player in a medieval/fantasy world filled with magic, monsters and knights. Unlike the original Dragon Quest games, the player's character doesn't do any of the fighting in battles; instead the player has to rely on capturing, breeding and raising monsters to do the fighting for them.

Games

Dragon Warrior Monsters (1998)

First Dragon Quest title for Game Boy and the first Game Boy Color title, even release before the Game Boy Color.

Story

In the days before Dragon Quest VI, when Terry and Milayou were just children, a strange monster appeared one night and snatched Milayou away. Soon after, another monster, similar to the kidnapper, appeared and told Terry his sister was kidnapped by the evil Warubou. He informs Terry that his name is Watabou and must accompany him to the Kingdom of Greattree. After his arrival, Terry met the King and received his first monster to train. If Terry wins the Monster Trainer's Starry Night Tournament, he will be granted a wish. So Terry sets out with his team to explore the many monster dungeons to win the tournament and rescue his sister.

Information

The first Dragon Warrior Monsters game to be released for the Game Boy and Game Boy Color. The game features the characters Terry and Milayou from Dragon Quest VI when they were children. When first released in North America a lot of gamers saw the game as just a Pokemon clone, but upon playing the game they saw differently because unlike Pokemon the player can use and battle up to three monsters at once; this leads to a lot more strategy. Another thing that made the game stand out was the breeding system that allowed the player to breed two monsters to create a new more powerful type, the cost of this would be the loss of the original monsters.

Features

  • Breeding: After beating Class F, you are able to breed your monsters if they are at level 10 or above at the Shrine of Starry Night, which is taken care of by the current Master Monster Tamer. Breeding requires one male and one female monster. The result of the breeding will be an egg, containing a level 1 monster which has characteristics of both parents, including skills and stats. The egg can then be left in the monster farm or hatched, which costs a small fee. The monster born will have a plus number next to it, the number generally signifying the greatness of the monster's stats, the higher being the better.
  • Genders: Once the Egg Evaluator is available for use, eggs can have the gender of the monster they're containing checked and changed. Both requires a small fee which is paid to the Egg Evaluator.
  • Monster Farm: A storage place for your monsters, where they can be picked up or dropped off. There is an option to put monsters at the farm to sleep, which allows them to maintain their wilderness level but not grow in level. There can be 19 awake and 19 asleep monsters at any one time.
  • Leveling up: Just like in most RPGs, monsters are able to gain EXP (Experience Points) and level up. Each monsters' requirements for EXP to level up varies. When they level up, they gain stats and sometimes skills.
  • Warp Gates: You move around to other worlds through warp gates which are located underneath the throne room. To access these gates, you need to defeat a class ranking. There are a certain number of areas in a world and at the last one, you need to defeat a boss. Other gates are hidden throughout Great Tree, such as one in the library that is only accessable after befriending over 50 diferent monsters.
  • Arena Battles : In this game you go through ranks that consists of three different battles who you have to defeat before you can advance to the next ranking. Each rank provides harder challenges: the higher the rank, the harder the monsters. The battles you able to start at are from Rank G and go to Rank D and later in the game you are able to go from Rank C to Rank S. These battles open up gates for the character to explore and are necessary to progress through the story.
  • Tiny Medals:these metals are scattered throughout different worlds and are randomly picked up. In the game, there is a man who collects these medals and will give you certain items for how many you give to him. One such item is an egg of a Darck, which is one of the boss(???) monster.
  • Traveler Battles: While in other worlds, you can encounter other trainers that you can battle with. There are different types that will give or do something for you if you beat them:
    • Priest - Will heal you
    • Bard - Will give you medicine that will raise certain stats
    • Merchant - Will give you assorted items (such as Sirloins)
    • Soldier- Will give you random items
    • Wizard -Will transport you to the last portal in the gate
    • Traveler of Greatlog-will give you two random items, just like the soldier

Story

Cobi and Tara are both in a family of monster breeders who have come to the Kingdom of Greatlog to make a living. Shortly after they arrive, their mother tells them to pick up a package from the Vault. As they are heading towards the Vault, they run into the Prince and his companion Warabou, making trouble for the towns people. Unfortunately, after they get the package, it is taken by the Prince and his cohort. Cobi and Tara follow the both of them to a cave underneath the kingdom, where the two are arguing to whom should get the goods. The two of them try to get the package back but in the process knock a big plug out of a hole. The Prince leaves frantically and Warabou uses himself to plug up the hole. He tells Cobi and Tara that the plug allows for the island of GreatLog to stay afloat and without it, will sink. He tells the two of them to get a monster master and when they cannot find anyone, says that they will have to do it. A quest to save the kingdom has now begun..

Information

The second game in the Dragon Warrior Monsters series for the Game Boy Color, released in two versions, Cobi's Journey and Tara's Adventure. The only difference being the monsters you can obtain, in Cobi's version more direct combat monsters and in Tara's more supportive and healing type monsters. The game introduced the new monster family, Water.

Features

There are some differences in this sequel:

  • More monsters are now available including a new family, Water.
  • Keys Instead of a fixed number of worlds, you now have keys to travel there. These keys need to be appraised before they can be used. Some of the keys you obtain take to story specific worlds, others are just to explore. In the optional worlds, you need to fight a certain number of monsters to reach the final boss of the world (they are randomized, so there is no way to know who you will fight). The keys are also randomized so you do not know what you will get before you appraise them. Some of the worlds allow for you to obtain rare monsters or very common monsters depending on the name of the key.
  • Linking to both You are able to fight against another person via link cable just like in the first game. However, after you get to a certain point, you can fight someone playing the original Dragon Warrior Monsters.
  • Unlike the first game, the worlds are more interactive, such as including towns and caves. There are also storylines in some (that are mandatory) where you have to do certain objectives, as in the original, the areas were just randomized and the bosses do not play a major role.

Game mechanics

Starting Monster

File:Slimemonster.gif The first monster the player gets in each Dragon Quest Monsters/Dragon Warrior Monsters game is the Slime, who is also the official mascot of the Dragon Quest series.

Battle System

File:DWM2Battle.png
Monster Battle from Dragon Warrior Monsters 2.

A battles consist of one to three opposing monsters displayed in the center of the screen, with your own monsters Name, Health, Mana and Level displayed at the top of the screen.

Once the battle has begun the player will be given four battle commands,

  • Fight: simply lets your monster attack.
  • Plan: opens up another menu with another four commands,
    • Charge: will attempt to make your monster attack with its most direct and powerful attack.
    • Mixed: will attempt to make your monster use support ability's, such as shields, stat enhancements, summons and the like.
    • Cautious: will attempt to make your monster use defensive ability's, such as heal, revive and ability's that remove harmful stat effects.
    • Command: not able to be used in arena battles, command allows you to give direct orders to your monsters.
  • Items: opens up your items list and lets you use that item, either on the opposing monster or your own.
  • Flee: attempts to flee from the enemy.

Personality's

As you may notice it says "will attempt" for some of the commands, this is because each monster is given a certain personality depending on your actions used in combat. Those actions are Charge, Mixed and Cautious, which when used can raise/lower one of three hidden stats, Bravery, Prudence and Caring.

Basically this means a monster high in one of the three stats will be better at using an attack of that type and more likely to obey, for example a monster with the Personality type Reckless (which is high in Bravery but low in Prudence and Caring) will be more likely to use a Charge attack, whereas a monster with the Personality type Careless (a type high in Caring but low in Bravery and Prudence) will be more likely to use a Cautious attack. Personalities change quickly at lower levels than at higher levels, also monsters with a high wildness are harder to change personalities.

You may also use books to change a monsters personality. they are,

  • Quest Book - Makes the reader braver. (Costs 10000G)
  • Horror Book - Makes the reader more cowardly. (Costs 10000G)
  • BeNice Book - Makes the reader more kindly. (Costs 10000G)
  • Cheater Book - Makes the reader more sly. (Costs 10000G)
  • Smart Book - Makes the reader more thoughtful. (Costs 10000G)
  • Comedy Book - Makes the reader simpleminded. (Costs 10000G)

The best personality in the game is Hotblood, which is a monster high in everything, and the worst being Lazy a type low in everything.

Personality's make the game more challenging in the area battles, where the option to give direct commands to your monsters is not available.

A monster can have one of twenty-seven Personalities. They are,

  • Hotblood
  • Daring
  • Daredevil
  • Lone Wolf
  • Vain
  • Ez Going
  • Smug
  • Snobby
  • Reckless
  • Cool/Calm
  • Whimsy
  • Nosy
  • Whiz Kid
  • Ordinary
  • Hasty
  • Stubborn
  • Rebel
  • Spoiled
  • Humane
  • Uncertain
  • Careless
  • Shrewd
  • Carefree
  • Gullible
  • Sly
  • Coward
  • Lazy

Wildness

Another reason monsters might not obey you is their wildness(WLD in the game), a monster with a high wildness is less likely to obey your commands. Newly caught monsters will have high wildness, and also monsters kept in the farm for long periods of time. To lower a monsters wildness you just need to keep them in your party for awhile or you can speed the process up by feeding them meat items.

Capturing Monsters

File:Monstercatching2.png
Monster requesting to join your party.

As with other RPG's once you have defeated the opposing monsters and the battle ends, your awarded a certain amount of experience points (EXP) which are used to level your Monsters, unlike other RPG's though at the end of the battle, there exists a small chance the opposing Monster may join you.

This chance is increased by the use of meat items which lower a monsters wildness, although its not always a guarantee, the more you use the lower the monsters wildness will be and the more likely it is to join you. Certain types of meat lower monsters wildness more and allow you more of a chance to catch them. Those types are,

  • BeefJerky - First obtainable meat. Lowers wildness by 5. (costs 20G)
  • Porkchop - Lowers wildness by 10. (costs 80G)
  • Rib - Lowers wildness by 20. (costs 300G)
  • Sirloin - The best meat in the game. Lowers wildness by 100. (costs 1000G)
  • "BadMeat" - The same as BeefJerkey, except that it poisons.

You can even use Rib and Sirloin meat to capture monsters off opposing Monster Tamers.

Monster Families

  • Materials - These monsters are all composed of metals or other minerals. They are resistant to Ice and Fire attacks and have a high defense. Examples: Golem and mudoll.
  • Bugs - Insectoid monsters are part of this family. They start with weak stats but grow to have good attack and defense. They usually learn many poison based skills. Examples: Hornbeet and Armorpede.
  • Plant - The monsters in this family include trees, flowers and other plants. Examples: Rosevine and Facetree.
  • Zombies - This family is comprised of undead monsters. Examples: WhiteKing and Hork.
  • Slimes - The monsters in this family are all variations of the Slime monster. Examples: Slime and GranSlime.
  • Birds - This family consists of mostly winged mammals and birds. They are usually the easiest to raise of all the families. Examples: Dracky and RainHawk
  • Dragons - This family consists of lizards and dragons. They are strong in most stats but use more EXP to level up. Examples: Dragon and Divinegon
  • Demons - This family is comprised of mostly humanoid monsters that are generally considered to be evil. Examples: MadKnight and AgDevil.
  • Beasts- This family is made up mostly of mammals and have high HP and Attack. Examples: Antbear and Unicorn.
  • Water - New family introduced in Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 made up of sea monsters. Examples: KingSquid and WhaleMage.
  • Bosses (???) - These are the most powerful monsters in the game, having very high stats and learning lethal skills. They are also the hardest to obtain. These monsters are sometimes referred to as Demon Lords due to them being bosses or major enemies from other games in the Dragon Quest franchise. Examples: Zoma and DracoLord
