Katie Grand Born in Leeds 1 April 1971, Katie Eleanor Grand grew up in Selly Oak, Birmingham and is a British fashion stylist and creative director, who is Editor-in-Chief of LOVE Magazine, which she founded in 2009, as well as Contributing Fashion Creative Director of W Magazine.

Life and career

Early life

An early obsession with fashion led her to study BA Fashion Design with Print at Central Saint Martins. In 1993, during her year out, she launched Dazed & Confused magazine with Jefferson Hack and Rankin. None of them realised just how important to their generation this fold-up, pamphlet-style fanzine – as it was back then – would become. In her role as Fashion Director, the influence of Dazed grew as the magazine became a heavyweight tome.

Fashion career

DAZED

As the original Fashion Director of Dazed, Katie styled Gigi Hadid for their 25th anniversary cover in 2017, shot by Rankin, also commissioning Lila Belle Moss to interview Gigi for the issue.

In 1993, during her year out from studying at Central Saint Martins, she launched Dazed & Confused magazine with Jefferson Hack and Rankin. None of them realised just how important to their generation this fold-up, pamphlet-style fanzine – as it was back then – would become. In her role as Fashion Director, the influence of Dazed grew.

ANOTHER

Grand was launch editor for the pilot magazine and the two subsequent issues.

THE FACE

Inspired by a copy of The Face she bought in 1984, she decided then that she wanted to go into the world of magazines.

In September 1999 she became Fashion Director of The Face

POP

In 2000, the publishers of The Face approached her about launching a new fashion/art title. This quickly materialised as POP magazine, heralding the arrival of the luxury superglossy women’s biannual as the most authoritative format in fashion publishing. The inaugural issue featured a group of her friends as pole dancers on its cover including Katie Hillier, Liberty Ross, Luella Bartley, Phoebe Philo, Stella McCartney.

LOVE

Following eight years and 20 issues of POP, she was invited by Condé Nast to launch a new biannual, which became LOVE Magazine, launching February 2009 with a naked Beth Ditto on its cover.

  1. movingLOVE is a close collaboration between Katie Grand, directors Call This Number who are Steve Mackey and Douglas Hart, who shot the films in London and New York using vintage analogue video equipment.

Late 2016, together with Kendall Jenner, she launched #LOVEME17, a cross-media search to find an icon for the next generation to be photographed by Kendall for the cover of the Spring/Summer 2017 issue of LOVE Magazine. Of the 110,000 who got in touch, 25 were selected. A long-standing relationship with Kendall began when Katie cast her in Marc Jacobs’ Autumn/Winter 2014 show which literally catapulted her onto the global fashion stage. #LOVEME17 is Kendall’s second photography commission by Katie for LOVE, having previously shot Kaia Gerber for the Autumn/Winter 2016 issue.

BOOKS

Along with Giles Deacon and Sølve Sundsbø, she produced a photographic tome ‘Giles, Sølve and Katie,’ documenting 13 years of Giles. A close collaborator, she has styled Giles’ shows from February 2004 and continues to work with him on his couture collections.

FASHION INDUSTRY

When Katie presented Adriana Lima with her Fashion Icon Award at Daily Front Row’s 5th Annual Fashion Los Angeles Awards, Adriana responded: ‘There were times when I did struggle with my work, that I did not feel confident enough, beautiful enough, and Katie, she still chose me to do a campaign.  I was losing my confidence and you just gave it back to me, and so what I’m trying to say, is that this woman beside me is so talented, she has a wonderful heart, truly, and I have seen it, thank you so much.’

Walking Daily Front Row’s 5th Annual Fashion Los Angeles Awards red carpet, Jaime King, told reporters: 'I left the fashion industry and the only person that could bring me back was Katie.  There’s few people that have the vision that she does.  If she calls, I’ll do anything.'

When LOVE won 'Best September Issue’ at Daily Front Row 4th Annual Fashion Media Awards, Adriana Lima, in presenting Katie Grand with the award, told the audience she was: 'The Dr Dre, Pharrell Williams and Kanye of fashion, but just a little more badass,’

Kaia Gerber in accepting her Female Model of the Year award at Daily Front Row 4th Annual Fashion Media Awards, said: 'Katie Grand, thank you for including me in your creative vision, every time I work with you I feel so honoured,’

At Daily Front Row’s 2nd Annual Fashion Media Awards, Kendall Jenner presented Katie Grand with ‘International Fashion Magazine of the Year’ award for LOVE, with Kendall saying of Katie: 'Her contributions to the fashion industry are a constant source of new ideas that are a beautiful reminder to all of us that this business was always meant to be a celebration of creativity.'

‘When a talent is enduring enough to outpace the industry’s ebbs and flows to carve out a career spanning decades, one stands up and takes notice. Katie Grand is one such talent. London-based Grand’s body of work reads like a fashion rap sheet, and her titles are many: she is a stylist, an editor, and a creative director. She is what every millennial multitasker wants to be, with all the credits to prove it. Unofficially, she is the go-to arbiter of cool, a visionary, someone with her finger firmly on the pulse of the zeitgeist.’ Forbes, February 2017

Kendall Jenner appeared on The Tonight Show in February 2017, telling host Jimmy Fallon about her new photography vocation with LOVE Magazine, name-checking Katie Grand, and showing him her #LOVEME17 covers.

Katie Grand sits on the British Fashion Council’s Press Committee.
