Petra Hammesfahr (born 10 May 1951 in Titz, North Rhine-Westphalia) is an acclaimed German crime writer. She has won several awards, including the Crime Prize of Wiesbaden and the Rhineland Literary Prize.[1][2]

She published her first novel at the age of 17, and has been compared[by whom?] to Patricia Highsmith, Ruth Rendell, and Stephen King (as a reflection of her bestseller-status in her native Germany).[citation needed]

Her novel The Sinner was published to wide acclaim in English by Bitter Lemon Press in 2007/2008 (and again recently[when?] in the United States by Penguin Books), translated from the original by John Brownjohn.[3][4][5] The Sinner has been adapted for television by USA Network as an eight-episode limited series starring Jessica Biel and Bill Pullman, set to premiere on August 2, 2017.

A second novel, The Lie, was also published by Bitter Lemon Press.[citation needed]

Hammesfahr lives in Kerpen, a town near Cologne.[citation needed]
