MEMOS TO SELF

  1. Learn about AWB.
  2. Broad Universe Wikipedia Project
  3. Articles with the {{copy edit}} tag on are different from requests. You did the right thing by removing the tag, and nothing else needs doing. By the way, requests are sections within Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Requests, not subpages of it, so a search like that would never work. You can see all requests (as opposed to tagged articles) by going to Wikipedia:WikiProject Guild of Copy Editors/Requests and doing a text search. Hope this helps. --Stfg (talk) 09:55, 1 February 2014 (UTC) (source)[reply]

GOCE July 2013 barnstar

The Minor Barnstar
This barnstar is awarded for participation in the WP:GOCE July 2013 copy edit drive. Thank you for taking part! Diannaa (talk) 23:35, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
@Diannaa: Oo! Oo! My first! I'm so excited! :-D No irony, no sarcasm here: I really am pleased. Thank you. --Thnidu (talk) 04:33, 6 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cognitive Sociolinguistics

Please help us out with Cognitive Sociolinguistics, which needs links from other articles, improvements on the references, and a general checkup by an expert. (Good to see you at the CHF!)

@Dthomsen8: Sure. Good to hear from you! But you left the above note unsigned, and I had to go to the History page to see who it was from. --Thnidu (talk) 01:04, 27 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If you are interested..

Was wondering if you could you take a look at the Spokane, Washington article and FAC. Dank has finished half of it, up to the Economy section, but I think hes focused on other things at the moment and he thinks this article could use another good copyedit. The article has 2 supports at the moment and were trying to push it over the line. If you are interested, we would love your help, if not, no worries and happy holidays!G755648 (talk) 05:28, 27 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@G755648: Sure, I'll have a go at it. I probably won't get through it tonight, though, as it's just past midnight here. --Thnidu (talk) 05:02, 28 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@G755648: Done! Please have a look at it. --Thnidu (talk) 08:02, 29 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I somehow missed your message here until you pinged me again, lol. As Dank said below, it is a brilliant copyediting job and Im so glad I tapped the guy who is a linguist to look at it. If Dank says its good, its got to be true. I dont know if you saw, but I thought you might be interested that I added a note in the article about one of the stories for the origin of the name, "Spokane". Its an interesting little tidbit if anything. Thank you again for your awesome contributions all over this website. You are amazing!G755648 (talk) 02:30, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@G755648: Aww, gee, thanks! I wrote to one of my old classmates in linguistics who has worked with Salishan languages about that place name. He wrote back:
But every single so-called meaning of a Salish place name, every single one that I've heard or seen, is total fabrication on the part of some white man who was quoted because he was there before the quoter.
He passed the question on to a colleague of his who has done particular study of place names in the area. If I can, I'll find a way to incorporate their answers into the article. --Thnidu (talk) 06:11, 11 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Just looked around your userspace, and I'm impressed as hell. Then I looked at the copyediting job you did on Spokane, and it's beautiful ... everything improves readability. (I'm going to make a few minor formatting edits, but I'm leaving your words alone.) I missed the boat on putting together an academic career ... that didn't bother me (much) until I got involved with Wikipedia 7 years ago ... now I find myself sorely needing help from linguists, and rarely get it in the normal day-to-day stuff. To give you a one-link introduction to what I'm up to, see WT:TFA#Proposed TFA coord team; it's very likely that I'll soon be in charge of vetting and writing the first thing that comes up each day on the Main Page, the blurb on "Today's Featured Article". I've been keeping data for a long time that may or may not be of use to linguists; let's talk about that some time. - Dank (push to talk) 12:13, 29 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm feeling slightly embarrassed about my copyediting job there ... but that's silly, I shouldn't be. I have to pick my battles, so I typically only fix things that I know people are going to back me up on. But I'd be willing to fight for many of the changes you made (not that we have a lot of copyediting fights at FAC ... I could use a few more!) - Dank (push to talk) 12:22, 29 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm starting to look at the second half of the article now (I haven't worked on this part before). I reverted this edit of yours ... we don't allow "see also" statements in the text, because we've found that people misuse them to imply things that they're not willing to (or can't) find sources for. It would be fine to say for instance "In (whatever year) there were three Jewish congregations in Spokane", but in general, and especially at FAC, you have to cite a source, and you have to check the source yourself. "See also" statements can be fine as section hatnotes, particularly when they support our summary style. - Dank (push to talk) 15:03, 29 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Dank: Wow, thanks. It's good to get confirmation and appreciation. I was a bit worried at the reversion for a second, till I read the note and came here to see the discussion. Perfectly understandable, I was just unaware of some of the fine points. --Thnidu (talk) 18:26, 29 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sure thing, and I'm always happy to answer questions. - Dank (push to talk) 18:47, 29 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Dank: I've sourced the Jewish congregation data. Would you like to take another look at the ¶? --Thnidu (talk) 21:38, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, I've made an edit and I'll comment at the FAC. Thanks. - Dank (push to talk) 21:45, 2 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

December 2014

Information icon Hello, and thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I noticed that you recently added commentary to an article, Chautauqua. While Wikipedia welcomes editors' opinions on an article and how it could be changed, these comments are more appropriate for the article's accompanying talk page. If you post your comments there, other editors working on the same article will notice and respond to them, and your comments will not disrupt the flow of the article. However, keep in mind that even on the talk page of an article, you should limit your discussion to improving the article. Article talk pages are not the place to discuss opinions of the subject of articles, nor are such pages a forum. Thank you. Chris Troutman (talk) 00:30, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Chris troutman: All true and reasonable, but that wasn't a comment on the article or an editorial opinion. I saw a dead link, tried to recover it from archive.org, and wasn't able to, so I left a note to spare other editors the same waste of time. I can see that it would have been better for me to wrap that note in an HTML comment. I also think it would have been better for you to do the same rather than revert it. What do you think? --Thnidu (talk) 00:57, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
You might be right about commenting it out; that didn't occur to me. Typically I leave a note on the talk page rather than in the coding for issues like that. I posted the template here because I template regulars. It takes the emotion and wording out of play. On your suggestion though, I'll go back and add a comment. Chris Troutman (talk) 01:06, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Chris troutman: Using a template that way makes sense to me, for that reason. Thanks for putting the note back, as a comment. --Thnidu (talk) 03:42, 9 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Chris troutman: An afterthought: a good reason for putting it into an HTML comment in the code rather than on the talk page is to accommodate different styles of copyediting. One person may read or scan the entire talk page for recent developments and methodically copyedit the whole article. Another, or the same editor on a different occasion, may notice something that looks wrong while reading the article for itself, and just go in to change that one item. --Thnidu (talk) 08:01, 14 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

GOCE coordinator elections

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors

Candidate nominations for Guild coordinators to serve from January 1 to June 30, 2015, are currently underway. December 2014 GOCE newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors December 2014 Newsletter

Drive: Thanks to everyone who participated in November's Backlog Elimination Drive. Of the 43 people who signed up for this drive, 26 copy edited at least one article. Final results, including barnstars awarded, are available here.

Progress report: The November Drive removed 26 requests from the Requests page and 509 articles from the {{copy edit}} backlog. We copy edited 83 articles tagged in the target months; July, August, and September 2013. Together with tag removals from articles unsuitable for copy editing, we eliminated July 2013 from the backlog and reduced August and September's tags to 61 and 70 respectively. As of 01:01, 1 December 2014 (UTC), the backlog stood at 1,974 articles, dipping below 2,000 for the first time in the Guild's history (see graph at right). Well done everyone!

Blitz: The December Blitz will run from December 14–20 and will focus on articles related to Religion, in recognition of this month's religious holidays in much of the English-speaking world. Awards will be given out to everyone who copy edits at least one of the target articles. Sign up here!

Election time again: The election of coordinators to serve from 1 January to 30 June 2015 is now underway. Candidates can nominate themselves or others from December 01, 00:01 (UTC), until December 15, 23:59. The voting period will run from December 16, 00:01 (UTC), until December 31, 23:59. You can read about coordinators' duties here. Please consider getting involved and remember to cast you vote—it's your Guild and it doesn't organize itself!

Thank you all once again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve anything without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators Jonesey95, Baffle gab1978, and Miniapolis.
